Fund for the Public Interest
Anyone worked for them? I was offered a job as a field manager, making about 400-500 a week for the summer. I've read plenty of bellyaching online. Some of it was legitimate, but has since largely been resolved by a class action lawsuit. The rest was basically complaining that it was a lot of work, at only a little bit above minimum, and repeated failure to meet your fundraising quota resulted in firing, no if's and's or but's about it.

"Vaft wanted to keep it fun and non-political, so he changed the name of the game. I don't think it's an issue of free speech until someone makes an issue out of it."

zultar, that is simply wrong.

Vaft did not change the name of his own volition. Someone specifically raised the concern with him regarding the game's name. Therefore, someone made an issue out of it.

Or how about "When a TC and an HC love each other very much..."
zultar (4180 DMod(P))
08 Apr 12 UTC
So someone thought it *might* have been offensive and he said something to Vaft. Vaft then changed it. I don't really see this as an issue because it's Vaft's decision, and he's not making a statement out of it. It's not like he's saying that everyone should do this because of x, y, and z. I just don't see it as an issue, Sarg.
Maybe it's just me but it seems like you are making a mountain out of a mole hill.

Sargmacher (0 DX)

I'm not targeting Vaft, zultar. I'm not saying Vaftrudner has set a precedent.

My point was that the deletion of a game because the game title upsets someone's sensitivities - someone, I might add, who was not involved and had no intention of playing anyway (as Vaftrudner admitted) - is damaging because the nature of the deletion was related to the title's supposed anti-Christian sentiment in its reference to Vaftrudner as the son of God, not Jesus. This is not a personal issue between Vaftrudner and that person. This is a very wide issue that comes under the divide between freedom of speech and protection from hate speech.

In a world where we are increasingly seeing incidences of blasphemy laws, assasination based on freedom of speech, laws banning discussion of certain topics (ie genocide censorship laws), and not to mention the burning of books from places as far apart as America and Afghanistan - no, I don't think this is a mole hill, zultar. This is very much a 'mountain' issue. And even if this incident here is only a tip of an iceberg, an iceberg it is nevertheless the tip of.

Whilst I think people, institutions, and organizations should be protected from hate speech - I don't think faith should be privileged over freedom of speech. Suppose I feel as passionately about Vaftrudner's right to a resurrection narrative as literalist Christians do about Jesus. Why should their feelings be protected more than mine?
We should never abandon the idea of equal liberty, even in the face of sensitivities.
Everyone is entitled to equal respect and concern, not some having privilege over others. The same evangelical Chrstians who complain about unequal treatment or unfair parodying of their religion will often vociferously oppose equal gay marriage and gay rights.

Double standards are the warning signals of a free society.

I am passionate about this issue just as much as someone will have been passionate enough to ask Vaftrudner to delete the existence of his game title. If everyone can defend the passion of that person to deny freedom of speech/creation on this issue - why can they not defend my passion to stand against such instances?

I want to say that I didn't think the game title that Vaftrudner created was particularly witty or creative - and I think it was out of taste to create such a game title on the Easter weekend.

But I don't think that meant it merited deletion.
Vaftrudner (2533 D)
08 Apr 12 UTC
Here's the kicker - I didn't even know that it was Easter still. I don't celebrate it, and neither does anyone I live with. And I'm in a state of mind now where I don't really leave the house or keep up with current affairs. So the timing was not intentional. Once I had been called out on it, in a polite way I might add, without anyone even ASKING me to change it, just saying "I don't want to play in that game", I realised that I was the jackass, not that person.
Sargmacher (0 DX)
08 Apr 12 UTC
I don't think that person is a jackass either.

But I don't think deleting the game was necessary. Your original post made it seem like someone asked you to delete it because it "made fun of someone's faith".

I think a simple apology on the thread would have been fine and then to carry on. However, your action, in itself, to delete the game is kind and worth praising. But I am skeptical of any appeasement or curtailing of freedom of speech to privilege one group over another. That is the concern I wanted to raise.

zultar (4180 DMod(P))

I didn't realize the point of a debate was to +1 people. If we do that willy nilly, then we sink to KA's level, do we not?
Furthermore, the few exchanges that we have cannot be considered a "debate." I am a bit affronted that you think this constitutes a debate and would like for you to retract your inaccurate statement.
Now, however, if you +1 me, then I will reconsider the issue as I would have a positive reinforcer of my behavior.

Sarg, I was the one who felt uncomfortable with the name and decided to not play in it. I never asked anything from Vaft and simply, and gently stated that I was less than thrilled by it. Really, it had very little to do with Vaft, who I have enjoyed interacting with and I know holds different views than I do, I just felt a bit of a twinge playing in it with it especially with it being Easter. You can agree or disagree with that if you wish. Vaft is able to freely express is opinions, and I have not and will not do anything to infringe upon that. I also have the freedom to express myself through either non-particpation, pming Vaft or commenting on the forum.

I really did not intend to cause any commotion and hesitated to say anything. Vaft was gracious and went beyond what I expected. I find that to be comendable in this particular situation.

I absolutely agree with that, Barn3tt.

I also find Vaftrudner's actions commendable for their good intentions.

*Barn3tt, who had been gazing down into his glass of beer, looked up at Sargmacher across the other end of the table, staring straight into his eyes. Sargmacher held the stare, as zultar quietly faded out the piece of music he was playing on the piano, shut the lid and looked nervously over at the two men.
"No", says Barn3tt softly, "this is not over, Sarg. You crossed a line with your freedom of speech call. Now...now you will pay."
Quickly and suddenly, Barn3tt has pushed his chair away from the table, stood up, and is holding a gun stretched out in his right hand pointing directly at Sargmacher. Sargmacher, like a demi-God, had recognised the intention and, almost to the second, mimicked the actions of his partner across the table.
"Don't be stupid, Barny," says Sargmacher, slightly raised, "This isn't the time or the place."
Zultar is quietly shuffling his piano into the backroom of the bar.
"You know what I mean, Barny," says Sargmacher, still holding Barn3tt's gaze.
Barn3tt, unfazed, stands still, staring into Sargmacher's eyes. He opens his mouth to speak. No words sound out but the table is kicked flying into the air. A gunshot is heard. Then a second. Footsteps are heard running out, the slam of a door. Silence.

Zultar peeps his head out from the backroom behind the bar. There is a lot of smoke and whilst he can't see clearly he can make out a pair of shoes lying on the floor. "Damn hillbillies, they is always leaving them's shoes", he mutters. Then, after grabbing his broom and walking forward to the table, he notices that the shoes are attached to legs and those legs are of a man lying in a pool of blood. Zultar reels back and has to steady himself against his own bar top as he realises that for the second time in his life someone has died in his bar. He bends down to see the face of the man below the table
and collapses to the floor when he discovers the truth.
+1!
