GR Public Press Game
I have not played a good (or any) public press game for a long time. I wonder if it is possible to have 7 out of the top 50 GR players join such a game. This can be anon or non-anon and it should be 36 or 48 hours. WTA only. Indicate your interest inside (please sign up only if your April GR rating is between 1 to 50)

I want to put it on my laptop, but I have overheating issues when I run it : /

Can't get my printer to work....but I'm a linux noob...otherwise I *love* it on my netbook. The thing screams as compared to when I'm running Windows on it.

I use Ubuntu. I've tried a few other distros, Slackware, Gentoo, Debian and Arch, but I always return to Ubuntu. It's just so easy to use. Perfect for a desktop.

I use ubuntu at work, so I'm on it consistently (I'm a former SuSE user that moved to ubuntu several years ago). Other than adobe flash failing terribly on linux, in general, I'm curious as to what your beef is (for most, it is poor configuration).
Puddle (413 D)
03 Apr 12 UTC
My main beef is flash, and just general instability lately, I stopped using it a month ago (I dual-boot windows for games and some peripheral gadget syncing) and I'm going to give it another go at the end of the month with 12.04.

I still am not sure if I am going to stick with linux, because I just can't get away from a few programs, and wine doesnt cut it, I need usb support. Also I've had a ton of probles with wine, and I hate the ad-hoc way it looks and works.
Puddle (413 D)
03 Apr 12 UTC
Oh also forgot the touch pad will just stop responding when I'm in ubuntu, forcing me to restart the computer
fortknox (2059 D)
03 Apr 12 UTC
Wine isn't worth it, and I have an xbox for games. Flash isn't something I care about having.
With those in mind, I have 0 instability. My uptime is 144 days, but that was because the building lost power.

@Fort -- as a PC gamer for years, I finally broke down and bought a XBOX 360 for Christmas...*love it*. Best purchase I have made in ages (along with the huge flat panel, of course, to go with it...hee hee...)

I'm not trying to start a debate here. But, fellow linux user here. (Fedora)

I feel your pain. I've tried Ubuntu a few times, and particularly some of the new builds, because of some larger changes have been increasingly unstable. (Mind you something I'm used to, I mean I do use Fedora after all), something which I was expecting to see less of in Ubuntu. Particularly since my testing it out had to do with seeing if I wanted something which is often considered to be more stable then Fedora. But due to some features I'm less fond of, and no more stability then Fedora its been tossed back out into the linux timeout bin.

I should probably mention that I'm still on Karmic. No interest in using evolution.

@Krellin: My ex (who was my wife at the time) convinced me to go from PC gamer (looooong PC Gamer... like kings quest and the original duke-nukem sidescroller old) to the xbox. Took me a couple months, but it was totally worth it. Prevented constant update of my box, and less crashes and patches needed for the games.
Miss the mods, sometimes, but it was still a great decision.

I have a 360, and its great for FPS, and I've been buying games like mass effect and skyrim for them, but it recently came to my attention that you can get full functionality on a PC with a 360 controller so I might switch to PC for those games. Currently though games like the total war series and the paradox games I really do need to stay on PC to keep playing
fortknox (2059 D)

Yes, the strategy games just aren't the same without a PC. Curious how that'll eventually translate (because PC gaming is in serious decline).
fiedler (1293 D)
04 Apr 12 UTC
because PC gaming is in serious decline - I would have to dispute that. I think it has just moved to MM online gaming, where you can strategize (read: con) against real people!

Also, linux goes really well with pretentious wine.

I tried it but returned to Windows. Due to some problems in hardwares! Otherwise its awesome

I hate that a game like Skyrim was developed for the console and then ported to the pc. I think it hurts the pc gaming expierence...

Morrowind was excellent, very different feel i think. I don't think dumbing down is right i think it is a simplification necessary for the controller. Imagine a flight sim where on the pc almost every key was mapped to something and had a very steep learning cuvre...

if you really want to go the win route, instead of wine, try virtual box (straight from the source, not the cheapo available in the ubuntu distro). You'll need the boot disk (though I believe you can use your dual booted partition in the vbox). It won't be as crisp, but it should work.

I use ubuntu at home and at work. At home, I'm still on 10.4, but at work I'm up to date with 11.10. However, I really don't like the new unity interface.

I'm considering trying out Linux mint or another distro (maybe just one of the other flavors of ubuntu with a different environment) when I reinstall the OS on my home computer.
yebellz (729 D(G))
04 Apr 12 UTC
Abge, is the overheating related to the demands of the environment? Have you tried xubuntu?
abgemacht (1076 D(G))

@ye

No. The computer idles at upwards of 90degC, which damaging for the proc.

It runs much, much cooler on windows, so it's not a physical issue.

I've tried underclocking, which works, but the SW I found isn't very responsive and I often have all 4 cores running at 100% for no reason in Ubuntu.
yebellz (729 D(G))
05 Apr 12 UTC
Whoa, that's a lot more severe than I had assumed.

4 cores at 100% for no good reason sounds like a major configuration issue. What processes were responsible for that?

I run ubuntu I have no problems. Terminal rules all. Opensource is the only way to go. If I use windows or apples os I feel like I'm watching a commercial.

@ye

Honestly, I don't remember. The last time I tried was a couple months ago. The odd thing is this is on a lenovo, which typically has an excellent track record with Ubuntu.

When I get some down time, I may try installing the newest version and do some more tweaking.

Oh, I definitely prefer open source, use it as much as possible. I don;t think computer gaming is in decline, and even if it is, it isn't going to die. It was never a huge market, we just are comparing it to the monster that is console gaming.

What a thunderbolt! It brought back memories of Ryan Giggs beating David Seagate after a long run up the pitch in 99.

Debt Education for the uninformed
To most people the "national debt" is unfathomable. They need to be educated. The debt is actually millions of individual pieces of paper of various denominations called Treasury Bonds. Who buys and sells Treasury Bonds (the national debt) is quite revealing.
