"The Trial of Henry Kissinger"...What Do Those Who Actually KNOW About This Man Think?
Currently watching the documentary-version of the book "The Trials of Henry Kissinger" by Christopher Hitchens--boy, he seems to be coming up a lot with me lately, first his debates on FOX and then his news articles--and it's intriuged me, and since we CLEARLY have no shortage of political pundits online, I thought I'd ask those who might actually KNOW of this man and these issues already...Kissinger--what's your opinion, diplomatic hero or war criminal?

Attention hardcopy book fans:
Borders is going out of business, and all remaining stores will start liquidating this Friday. This makes me sad, since they're the second major corporate HQ in Ann Arbor to close in the last five years, we're literally U of M and nothing else at this point.

Someone Wants To Know.
So I was walking around my school (because that's what I do in the summer) and this nerdy girl game up to me (because she also likes to go to school in the summer) and asked me (because everyone values my opinion very highly at my school) if people had wings, could they fly. Not knowing that she was serious and had been aparently contemplating this all summer, I laughed and hurt her feelings.

But now I'm wondering....

Is being a spiteful codependent dictator a legitimate strategy?
I appreciate that you aren't supposed to hold grudges. However, is being honorable a legitimate strategy. I would seem to be in a person's interest to be trusted. Since at the high levels people know each other, am I cheating by not betraying my allies?

High GR, semi high pot game?
I'd like to establish one game with people I haven't played much with. I'd prefer those with high GR, but the final roll-call will be up to me. I'm only establishing one game here. If there are extra's, you guys can form more. If you really want me there, I'll see what I can do.

Woodrow Wilson
So I read about this Woodrow Wilson variant, where in true League of Nations style all negotiation happens in public press exclusively. I must admit I am intrigued by this, mostly because I have no idea how to backstab people this way. ;)

I would love to try this out and get some experience with this. I will open up a little session and password protect it. If you want to participate in a little low points WTA public press, give me a holler in this thread and I'll post you the password. Or else just stop by and share your experience, give some advice, leave some pointers for the newbie.

How is it different from public press only games? That's available as an option on this site by the way.
mr_brown (302 D(B))
07 Jul 11 UTC
It's not different at all. I just read about the variant first in the official handbook and then found out about the different press options here on this site.

For anyone interested, I opened up the game. gameID=63273
Post here, if you're interested.

I'll join if you send me the password. The public press games are always interesting, although they often become alliance against alliance and its harder to convince people to stab someone else.
SacredDigits (102 D)

I've played in a public press only game. It was kind of ruined by some CD's, but stabs were definitely possible. You just had to be really careful about how you did them because it could make EVERYONE hate you.

The one I was in also specified "stereotypical accents", which would have been more fun if anyone but me (Germany) and England (fiedler) had done them.

Woodrow Wilson was a KKK supporting rascist, by the way, if actual historical fact were available to the mainstream

Well in my very first game we got really serious about roleplaying our country's leaders, which was a lot of fun. I really got into my persona as the grand vizier to the Ottoman Sultan. It even went as far as me complaining to my allies about erratic moves plotted against my will by the Sultan. Hehehe.
mr_brown (302 D(B))
07 Jul 11 UTC
How do you go about negotiating opening moves, though? In all my games before I always sort of got on friendly terms with both my neighbors and then picked with which one to go and to which one to lie before the first move. Thats not as feasable in a public press game. What are your experiences?

The peace with all strategy works OK in a public press game and the first person to declare open war by either word or action often gets in trouble as others gang up on them to prevent a war of aggression. You can still negotiate DMZs or bounces (unlike in gunboat). I find that I play public press in a more reactive way then regular games. Although you have to make sure that you keep talking, it also has come to the talkers picking off the non talkers one by one.

*Bump*
Need players.
What I do in public press:

1. Talk to everyone.
2. Keep your intentions open and honest as much as possible.

If you do both of those -- pick an enemy and formally declare your intentions for war and peace with the other powers as they may be -- you will find other players reacting to you, and you will subsequently be controlling the flow of the game. By continuing to keep up communications, you will be able to keep your allies longer than everyone else.

Meh. My experience with Wilson games is that players are way to precautious. It will in 80% of the cases result in an east-west battle with Italy playing the wild card. When played right the diplomacy is subtle in global but actions speak for themselves. Problem is you've suddenly got a 'reputation', which means things that would be accepted in anon or normal play, like a douchy stab, are now full out in the open, causing other players to mistrust you. In other words, the public opinion is much more important. That would be a nice challenge, were it not it mostly leads to conservative behaviour and the one or two pulling their necks out will have them chopped consequently. Get some guts, people!

For lack of interest (so far I got one other player joined, bleh), I opened up another game without a password and more pre-game time.

To be found here -> gameID=63560

Might get one or the other asshat in it ('How u mean, public press onli. this suxxors!!11'), but at least the game will lift off the ground.

Since the last game fell through with the two brothers on the same computer shenanigans, I am yet again opening a new game.

gameID=63962
public press only
anon players
24h phase length
15 D bet

Whosoever wishes can join, its not password protected since its apparently hard enough to find people willing to play.

*bumpin it*
But as to not be too boring, here's a question:
When I first opened the game, I typed in the name 'Peace in our time'. The site automatically added '-3' after the title, so I assumed there had been two other games of that name already.

However, after opening this second try, I stuck with the name but the site added '-2' to it. The numbering went backwards with otherwise same wording. Whats up with that? Who can explain this to me?
