If this is accurate, why?
Why would al-queda target Hezbollah?
http://debka.com/article/8599/

Babak (26982 D(B))

keep in mind Debka file is an israeli psyops operation... it is staffed with former mossad agents and is a well-known source of psycops, intel, and talking points that the israeli intel community wants disseminated...

with that said, not ALL their stuff is full of s***.

in this particular case... a few 'between the lines' items jump out at me personally.

1. Al Qaida is Sunni, Hezbollah is Shia - so no love lost. they do NOT work together, and they disagree with each other vehemently. Hezbollah considers itself a national 'freedom' fighting operation (one can argue for/against this but note i talk about what THEY consider themselves), Al Qaida wants islamic rule world-wide (or at least the Middle East)... so off the bat, they are not 'allies' nor 'friends' by any measure.

2. This conspiratorial article (by the way, much reminiscent of the lens through which many Arabs also view political events) goes out of its way to connect this to a 'weak' Obama administration. at this point, there is no secret that hard-right Israelis (including Debka file readers/writers) have open animus against Obama. I almost promise you this story-line will make its way to Drudge, then maybe to Limbaugh and the rest of the VRWC and the Faux Noise crowd within a few weeks, and it'll be the new talking point of the right against Obama's nat. security credentials.

3. I personally would predict to you that Israel will attack either Lebanon or much less likely Syria before August of 2010. this article feeds the narrative (also stated by Israeli FM Avigdor Lieberman today or yesterday) that Harriri (the Lebanese western-oriented PM) is a tool of Hezbollah. If Israel makes such an attack, it needs to have some sort of plausible cover as to why the Lebanese gvnt is no different than Hezbollah...

but anyways... this is my quick analysis in response to your question... and in the end, even if the story is based on some grains of truth, in the end, Debka file reports should be seen for what they are... pointed and orchestrated psyops propaganda pieces intended to build a narrative.

cheers

Al Qaeda and Hezbollah are very different, religiously and politically. I presume the OP asks this question on the assumption that, because both are muslim, and both are militant, they must be allies. However this is no so.

Think about Northern Ireland for example, with the IRA* on the one side, and the Ulster Volunteer Force, Ulster Defence Association, and other militant Loyalist groups on the other side.

Both the IRA and the UVF and UDA are Christians, right? And they are militants! So they must be the best of friends, right?

Oh, and, as Babak said, I wouldn't consider DEBKA a reliable source of information.
I definitely don't consider DEBKA a reliable source. I consider it an interesting source, and a reflection of right wing attitudes, which is why I read it, just to understand.

That being said, one of the main tenets in the mideast is 'the enemy of my enemy is my friend...' I am well aware of the Sunni-Shia rift, and I certainly understand why Israel would want Hezbollah fighting alQueda. Al Queda has so many better targets, I wouldn't think they would waste time with Hezbollah.

As for needing a narrative to invade Lebanon, I think separating the government of Lebanon and Hezbollah cannot be done, and I don't think they need a complicated narrative to make that point.

Babak, I think Israel would like to have a another go and degrading Hezbollah operational capacity but.... with so many UN troops in southern Lebanon, Israel cant really afford to kill blue helmets and expect uncle sam to protect their asses this time
Sean, I think you overestimate the effect UN troops will have there. There were UN troops last go round too. If the UNs mission is to keep the peace, yet allow an extra-governmental militia to rearm, how fond do you think the Israelis are of that mission?
sean (3490 D(B))

oh , not fond at all, i just think isreal would go to great lengths to avoid accidentally killing a lot UN personal when they dont have a a surefire forgive all transgressions friend in the White house.
I disagree there. Israel has always had a mentality of 'do what needs to be done, worry about the consequences later...'

At this point I'm starting to think al-Qaeda would target anyone who wasn't al-Qaeda

Have you ever noticed that diplomacy nubs have an incredible sense of entitlement?
I've seriously learned from my mistake of playing low-stakes games. You end up playing with utter idiots whose sense of entitlement rivals that of rich girls on their sweet sixteenth birthday. I'm sick of playing with upstart hotshots who wouldn't know how to negotiate if a diplomacy board struck them in the face.

Can two units support each other
Sorry if this has already been answered or is obvious, but if two units are not moving, can they support hold each other? Say an army in Spain supports a unit in Marseilles, who is in turn supporting Spain, is this a valid order?? Thanks
