I'll be CDing all my games and won't be playing here any longer.

Peace.

honestly? going CD just because you dont feel like playing anymore is a doucher move...on a side note, why are you quitting?
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)
05 Jun 09 UTC
I will sit your account out if you give me the password.
I think this is a case of quitting because of poor results. Signalseven is in three games but has already been eliminated in one, has one SC remaining in another, and just got stabbed big time in the other. There must be nothing left to play for. I predict that this player will return some time in the future.
Akroma (967 D)
05 Jun 09 UTC
seriously ?

that's a shame man. don't let some tough luck discourage you.

Edi Birsan told me there was a period of 10 years during which he literaly lost every single game he took part in.

Please don't leave the game just because I stabbed you, that would really leave me with a bad conscience.
thewonderllama (100 D)
05 Jun 09 UTC
I wouldn't assume him to quit over poor results. I'm sure he has his reasons, I can't say I know what they are, but he's always been a good member of the community and a quality opponent. Let's not forget he drew with mac for the co-win in the GFDT finals last year.
Darwyn (1601 D)
05 Jun 09 UTC
Actually, I think he won with abab in the GFDT.

Since he hasn't told us why, we are all left to assume what we will and yellowpajamas makes a good point.

IF that's the case, I think this qualifies as one of the most douchebaggery moments of this site. If he had a legitimate reason, there would be no reason to make his comment sound as much of a dick as possible.

"I'll be CDing all my games and won't be playing here any longer. "

Good members of the community do not leave the site with an announcement like that. Sounds like a goddamn crybaby to me. Although I would invite him to discredit my assumption.
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)
05 Jun 09 UTC
It was with abab, yes.
Jacob (2466 D)
05 Jun 09 UTC
why don't you at least let someone else finish out your games?
I just wonder why make an announcement at all?
thewonderllama (100 D)
05 Jun 09 UTC
Whoops, apologies to abab, guess my memory ain't what it used to be. :)

Please, let's avoid speculation as to why he's chosen to leave, I'm sure none of us have enough facts to do more than guess. Since he's been a decent guy in the past I'm inclined to give him the benefit of the doubt, I encourage everyone else to do the same.
Darwyn (1601 D)
05 Jun 09 UTC
I understand your point wonderllama. Perhaps I was a little harsh. I apologize to you and Signalseven.

But certainly, it wasn't a classy move. It's not so much the why he's doing this as it is the how he did it.

As I said though, I'm open for an explanation. I don't know him as well as you might, so without an explanation, he's invited us to speculate what we want. So I did.

Who knows, there are lots of possibilities. My bet is phpDip is too good to keep in the back of life, so it has to be all or none. I know i've left the site for times before because playing diplomacy games just takes too much time to do alongside some things. He'll be back
mapleleaf (0 DX)

His past success notwithstanding, he is deserting League and Tournament games. Needless to say, should he return, future participation in these should be forbidden. Of course, he will simply return under another user name and screw up a couple of more contests, because we don't regularly ban IPs.

I know a couple of the stated reasons against banning IPs, and they don't hold water.

1. Innocent participants and/or future participants at the same IP will be punished.

2. The offender could simply use another easily available IP.

I don't need to point out where I'm going with this, do I?
Draugnar (0 DX)
05 Jun 09 UTC
Yes you do. I can reset my router at home and have a whole new IP in under 2 minutes, leaving some poor sap who comes online to get the IP I just abandoned.
Draugnar (0 DX)
05 Jun 09 UTC
And universities and everything from SMBs to big businesses have a small set of public IPs that all their students and/or staff share. Then there is the library/public access IP issue which has been brought up numerous times in the past.

Mapleleaf, IPs don't point to individuals anymore, nor are the fixed to a set location and haven't for many years. They point to subnets which can have thousands of people on them and they are usually dynamic when dealing with people using the internet.
mapleleaf (0 DX)
05 Jun 09 UTC
Fair enough. What does point to individuals then? Can you suggest anything to help with this problem?
Draugnar (0 DX)
05 Jun 09 UTC
IPs can be used to narrow down to locales somewhat, and if they use certain browsers, the subnet/internal IP can sometimes be determined, but even then the individual PC can reset it's internal IP so that some other schmuck gets stuck with the banned external/internal IP pair, but that is usually limited to one wrong person with slim odds of that person actually caring. I haven't looked at what all is in the packet header in a while as I rely on existing tools to route the packets properly and use the higher end tools.

One option would be to attach a non-expiring site cookie that only appears on the crowsers used in the commission of the crime and is put there when they attempt to login with the banned account. Once there, it could be used to forbid that user to create a new account. Both of these, though, have a potential negative effect on public computers where multiple people use not only the same computer, but the same login ID.

Akroma, two stabs in one game and both beautiful. Don't feel bad, feel awesome. I can only aspire to crushing someone so badly that they leave the game completely.
pootercannon (326 D)
05 Jun 09 UTC
Cent, I didn't actually laugh out loud at your comment ... but I almost did. :-)
figlesquidge (2131 D)
05 Jun 09 UTC
Draug - that's a nice idea, but it won't work: people will just clear their cookies.
Akroma (967 D)
05 Jun 09 UTC
Centurian, I doubt that my stab was the reason why he left.

If anything, it was the last straw, or something of the sort.

Immediatly after my stab he told me he would go CD, so I guess he had that idea for quite a while know, and was only waiting for, well, the last straw to be drawn.

so nah, my stab was just an ordinary one.

that being said, knifes deal piercing damage, and not crushing damage. A hammer or a mace of some sort would be needed. But we are in 1901, where the hell do I get a mace ?

Your local museum should have some nice ones. You are the Sultan, you should be able to get it!
Chrispminis (916 D)

This is sad, especially since he's in the middle of League games. I also can't help but think this is because of a slew of poor results (I've certainly had my depressing sprees). I feel bad for stabbing him in one of the GFDT games, because I think he was quite invested in the GFDT, having shared the win last year. He and I had always had a decent history of co-operation in the GFDT, and I think he assumed I would keep it up, especially since I actually shared both round 2 games with him.

I really do think Akroma's stab was the straw that broke the donkey's back.
Xapi (194 D)
06 Jun 09 UTC
Akroma:

This is Diplomacy, not D&D. In here, critical stabs count as crushing damage.

You must have rolled a 20.
fortknox (2059 D)
06 Jun 09 UTC
Stabs are part of the game. I had a lot of early success, and a lot of bad luck as of late. It can be frustrating, but you can't win every game, and we can't coddle people into thinking this game doesn't come with frustration and losing....
If he's having too hard of a time with it, then diplomacy is obviously not for him.
Friendly Sword (636 D)
06 Jun 09 UTC
Or you get games where (happens particularly as Austria) no-one stabs you- you simply just get raped from the getgo and have nothing by the end of 1902. *sob*

The really sad part is I seem to remember Italy saying "lol, you are so gullible!" After he attacked me.

Earlier I asked him if he was willing to consider a term deal from the getgo and his response was "I don't like making deals with people early in the game".
Troodonte (3379 D)

Unless he e-mailed someone from the site, I believe this is not a kind way to leave this community, even though ha may have very strong reasons that nothing have to do with Phpdip.

mapleleaf (0 DX)
06 Jun 09 UTC
@Troodonte - Nope. This guy makes ME seem humble. He simply cannot handle anything less than complete adulation. He brought this arrogant attitude to our League group last year(after his GFDT success) and we all just crucified him.

It wasn't pretty.
Akroma (967 D)
06 Jun 09 UTC
strangely enough, signalseven finalized moves in 3 of his 4 games

didn't going CD work differently ?
Darwyn (1601 D)
06 Jun 09 UTC
mapleleaf - lol

Friendly - I don't mean to pile on but that's funny...he called another player in one of my games a crybaby. At least he would know what one is.

Non Fiction Adventure books
Anyone have any good suggestions? Two of my favorites are 'In the Heart of the Sea' by Nathianiel Philbrick and a book about Shackleton (unfortunately there are many of them and I can't remember which I read). I like reading about explorers and any book where people end up eating each other ;)

A rules question about Supporting Troops
Question for all. Hypothetical. Paris attacks Gascony with Brest supporting Paris -> Gascony. And Picardy hold supports Brests.
If English Channel -> Brest does this brake the support of Brests to (Paris-> Gascony)
