Let's say you're Country A. You're an interior country, which means you have potential allies and enemies on all sides. It's a Winner Take All situation.
You successfully play countries B, C, and D off each other for a bit, then country D goes NMR. Country B moves in such a way that he can threaten you *or* Country D, and then country *E* goes NMR - which brings you into conflict with country F.
Many turns go by, and Country C is in position to win. Countries D and E are go, and B and F are in a pretty strong alliance. Country G is way the hell on the other side of the map, and doesn't really enter into discussions.
You can't make progress against the B/F alliance, and they're continuing to pressure you - but C continues to grow.
So you're in a position where you can keep your alliance with C, or you can turn on him to stop him from getting the win. Of course, while you're doing this, B and F will be eating you from behind, and at least one member of the alliance has made it clear they're much more interested in taking you down than in preventing C's victory - so you'll end up dead.
Given the above, do you attempt to stop the solo, even though you probably won't survive the experience? Or do you try to be a good ally to the end, even though you get nothing out of it?
