Global Press Only-3
Are there 6 more people interested in playing this interesting variant? Only press on the Global tab is allowed, which means no secret communication between players.

The last game was certainly a heated battle... And those from that game are welcome to join this next Global Press game, and of course, anyone else who wants to play is welcome too. The first six people to post in this thread saying they'd like to play will get the spot, so don't wait! :)

Five-way draws
How common are these? I'm in a game that is in 1907 and the majority of the players appear to be pushing for this... It kind of caught me off guard!! Maybe it's just a WTA thing as I haven't played too many of those...

NMR's in 1901... why are they playing on>?
I have taken over two games where the players dropped in Spring 01 and the game went on with a country not making any moves in all of 1901.

Why do you continue the game?
When the game has a Spring 01 NMR *no moves received, why not simply stop the game and restart with a new player. Are the points all that important>?

Another option may be to have a standing set of orders for Spring 1901 and they kick in when there are no orders and the player missing orders is immediately rejected and a replacement called. At least this way the game will not have a disaster start.

If the programer can deal with it there can be several options so that the starting 01 orders are not always the same for example:
Austria
A Budapest to Serbia 100%
F Trieste to Albania 100
A Vienna to: Galicia 50/Trieste 30/Budapest 20

"FINISH HIM!"
Does it ever bother anyone else from time to time how the game always cuts off at 18 SCs? Sometimes I'd really like to keep playing till the whole map is under my domination, or I'd like to keep fighting the winner tooth and nail. Also, it would be interesting psychologically to see how long some of the alliances that were in place at endgame hold up throughout postgame.

Ridiculous civil disorder country takeovers
It is truly stupid that someone is allowed to join a country that's going under(2 or less supply centers) and messing up the winning player's orders by joining late. This is habit of some that should be broken.

What happens when time runs out for a turn???
Simple Question...

When time runs out at the end of a turn, and you've entered moves, but didn't finalize them, what happens?

1-Do your units stay in civil disorder (all hold) even if you've enter non-finalized moves?

or

2-If you enter non-finalized moves, do units do those moves when time runs out?

Thanks!

Leagues... can someone explain this please?
What is the story with leagues?
What is it, how is it different than the normal games, what is the structure>/?
Braveheart (2408 D(S))

Some of the members proposed that it would be fun to play 7 games with the same people but each time you play as a different country.

From this idea the league concept sprung up - though unfortunately the choice of country remains random at present so you are unlikely to get play each nation once.

Points are awarded on a winner takes all basis for each game (e.g. solo = 7 points; 3 way draw = 7/3 etc). With SCs being used as a tie-breaker in the event that two people end up on equal points at the end of the season.

We have formed 7 leagues to start with - which will be used to decide weather you go in the top ranked league, 2nd top etc. And once the divisions have been created you have promotion and relegation (think it;s 2 up; 2 down).

This is all done outside the formal structure of this site - with tables maintained seperately etc. It's definitely not perfect but could be fun and I think it will give an alternate ranking system given there is some dissatisfaction with the points rankings that are currently used.

Rules around meta-gaming within league games have yet to be formalised i think - but I think that explicit you support me into Belgium in game A if you return the favour in game B has been ruled as not allowed (honour system only). Though alliances are expected to form based on previous league games and people will play according to the points they need going into the last couple of games within a league season.

So this is a 7x sort of tournament.
Are all the games going at the same speed? How are you going to handle Drop outs?
Thanks and I would like to see some reports on how it works out.
Braveheart (2408 D(S))
11 Sep 08 UTC
I think there is a list of volunteer babysitters (no-one allowed to babysit for more than one person in same league) to cover people when they are away. Drops outs am not so sure.... tink there might be a reserve list.

Each game due to start of the same day for each league (each 24 or 25 hours long i think).

You should get involved... a chance to play with more committed members of the site without needing too many points.

You join the league by emailing me with your screen name in the email, and crossing your fingers that there is a drop out.

There are 6 leagues of 7.

I am running it all. The rules are:

COMPETITION RULES:

Game Details:

Game Number: To be decided

Game Type: Winner Takes All

Phase Length: 25 hours

Pot size: 175 (Bet of 25). If any player wishes to reduce the bet he should email myself and alert all other players in his Group of it in a Global tab, and it then may be reduced. If all players wish to increase the bet, they should agree to in the Global tab of a game, and then each should email me to confirm that they wish to do this. If a player wants a lower than 25 bet for the first game, they will have the opportunity to ask for this in the pre-season email.

Each player is responsible for ensuring he is able to play in the game at the scheduled time, in order to achieve this, he may ask for a reduced bet. If he is unable to pay any bet, then he shall forfeit the game, and the game shall be played with a Civil Disorder Italy. If two players are unable to play, then there shall also be a Civil Disorder Germany. In the event that three or more players are unable to provide any bet, the game is considered a draw between those able to play. The SC counts for each player for the game are 34/the number of players able to play.

Errors: If the game is begun with any error in the set-up, the game shall be called a draw and then restarted.

Start dates: Games will begin in the second week of September, and new games will be begun during: The fourth week of September, the second week of October, the fourth week of October, the second week of November, the fourth week of November and the second week of December. Seven will be the maximum number of games. The games at the end of the season will be removed if it is voted that there should be fewer games. I shall provide reminders to every player of these dates. The second season will begin on the second month of February. There will be a summer break until September when the third season will begin.

Sitting:

Due to the long period of play in this league, we understand that people may need a sitter for their account. Because of this, we shall be providing the management of a sitting service for people's accounts. In return for having their account sat should they be unable to be at a computer, players will agree to sit other peoples' accounts in the leagues whenever they are able. We hope that players will be able to make sure that this system works, by agreeing to sit accounts willingly.

Points:

There will be 12 points awarded for a win, 6 points for a two-way draw, 4 for a three-way draw and 3 for a four-way draw. We doubt that there shall be five, six or seven way draws, however, should they occur, 2.4, 2 and 1.7 points will be awarded respectively.

In the event that two players have the same number of points, they will be differentiated between on the basis of a SC count across the games. The maximum SC count in any game is 18, even if more are held.

Leagues:

The winner of each league will enter the Premier league, along with the highest scoring second placed players. The five remaining second placed players will enter league A with the two highest scoring third placed players. The four remaining third placed players, all six fourth placed players and the four best fifth placed players will be seeded based on their performances and placed into league B1 and B2. The remaining players will be

I suppose if he is going to forfeit its because he doesn't have any points, otherwise he'd ask for a lower pot and that would be it.

Yes, sadly it is the case that I have zero points at present.
Darwyn (1601 D)

Does a forfeit by Ironclad mean we'll be playing game 1 with a CD country?
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)
11 Sep 08 UTC
Yes, it does. But he is still allowed in the league, he will just have a disadvantage.
Ironclad (0 DX)
11 Sep 08 UTC
If one of the games I'm in finishes before the first league game would I be allowed take over 'Civil Disorder Italy' (assuming there were still any Italian pieces left) or would you rather I stayed out of it altogether?
Xapi (194 D)
11 Sep 08 UTC
I suggest a sitter to be put in ironclad's place, CD Italy usually changes the balance of the game quite a bit.

And the idea of him making a new account for the sole porpouse of playing that game is not a bad one.
Ivo_ivanov (7545 D)

When a player knows he will be unable to play for an amount of time, he (or she) can request that someone play for them in their absence. The user will email his password to his sitter, and the sitter will play in his stead. I am currently doing this for Archonix.

Mr. Birsan, apparently you are some kind of diplomacy celebrity? I'm sorry I don't know who you are, but you seem to have alot of questions and suggestions that miss the point. We aren't on a drawn out play by email site or playing FTF. You don't seem to have really tried our system out judging by the two cds you have picked up. The reason this site is different from yours is because thats how some people like it. If they didn't, they would be on your site.

attack move
hi,

im wondering about the outcome of this situation:
http://phpdiplomacy.net/map.php?gameID=5501&turn=4&largemap=on&nocache=4174dd

more specific, about kiel.
moves of germany were:
A HOL - KIE
A MUN S A KIE - BER
A KIE - BER
F DEN - BAL

the russian moves were:
A BER - KIE
F BAL - BER

from what i get, the army ber shouldnt bounce back the arme moving into kie from hol, as the army in kie attacked / moved into ber directly.
though, HOL was bounced back.

lemme know where im wrong :)

Kestas, please check the background of the players
There is something very weird going on in the game http://www.phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=4896

I took over CD France at autumn 1908 & started to maneuver my units. The whole time I have been in the game, Turkey (Happyfunball) has supported Italian (DirtyDiaperDicky) units, made aggressive moves against me & at the same time! each year surrendering his SC-s to Italians. There has been virtually no communication from Turkey nor Italy, except one response from Turkey which ended with the line .... you can lose buddy. Italy is going to have 18 SC very soon and you can't stop it. :)

Such behaviour has no rational explanation & at the very least it's a poor sportsmanship, but I'm afraid that there is more than that....
