Bugs and gamesmanship
I have just "won" No CD Allowed
http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=3963

I was able to do this because the system did not act on a draw request. I kept on playing (as Italy) and my opponent (Austria) missed a turn.

Is what I did wrong or good play? What is the general feeling regarding the explotation of bugs in the system? Should players it if they can or is it bad form?

Global Press Game?
How about a game where only Global chat is allowed, that is, no secret messages between players. However, this would be different from a no press game, as communication between players about strategy and tactics would be allowed on the Global tab, for all ears to hear. Is this a stupid idea, or would there be people interested in playing? And, for this type of game, I think WTA would be best, with a fairly low pot. How 'bout it?

New Ranking System
I'm sure this has been posted sometime before.

What if, instead of using points, rank was based on either;
a) a gross number of points won, or
b) a figure computed by multiplying win and survival percentage with total games played. Wins would, of course, be weighted more than survivals, which would be weighted based on number of supply centers.

Isn't it just right to have the finals of the first ever GFDT end in a 17/17 draw?

Well that is how Abab and I felt about it anyhow.

Without our teamwork and our Slow and Steady approach to the final round we would have been under the boot of the other great players who took part in the finals.

How Not to Win: My story of the GFDT 2007
WARNING: WALL OF TEXT BELOW, READ AT OWN RISK
Signalseven (116 D)
19 Jun 08 UTC
This isn’t a “look at me I’m awesome post”. It’s a “I’m really bored and I need a break” kind of post.

I am an Emergency Services Dispatcher and most nights at work can only be described as either heart poundingly exciting or mind numbingly boring. This has been one of the ladder and with the final round of the Grand festive Diplomacy Tournament 2007 coming to a close I decided to write a little bit about how I came to be in the position I’m currently in. As of autumn 1916 I’ve been in a position to take the win by stabbing Russia and claim ultimate victory but that would go against the whole not winning theme of this story.
.

Round 1: One of three

My journey of not winning began way back in October of ‘07 when there was a forum started inquiring if players of PhPDiplomacy were interested in starting a tournament. The forum started filling up quit quickly and I added my name to the hat as the 49th entrant into what would become the GFDT 2007. There were a couple of no shows and they were replaced but I still consider myself the last person to enter.

The first round of the GFDT was as expected a little unorganized off the bat and there were some problems (i.e People who joined the wrong games, Games were started with the wrong point values.) The seeding alone was a lot of work for just one person to have done and all the human error that can occur since this was after all a player driven tournament. The whole process was much less of a cluster*&%^ than it could have been. On the 12th of Nov 07 the players all came together and finally got each of the 7 first round games underway.

I was seeded into game 5 and due to one of those miscommunications we had to re-start and join game 5.1. Well I drew Germany and let me tell you I hate to play Germany. It’s not that Germany isn’t a strong power it’s just that I personally don’t usually do all that well playing as Germany. There are a lot of fronts to fight on and it takes a lot of press to keep things working in your favor. With the Holidays coming up I was worried about being able to keep up with it all and trying to advance. Lucky for me the first round was set up so that the top three from each game were allowed to advance into the next round. So I set off on my plan “Not to Win”.

My first goal in game 5.1 was to get a three man team that would work together Since Russia and England both contacted me I figured that we could give that a shot. Well Russia worked out well and I only had to promises him that he would win the game with my help. England on the other had was entirely insane. I’ll give you an exchange of what happened so you can see why England didn’t last long in out three man team.

-------------------------------------------

14 Nov 07 England: Given your alliance with me and treaty with Russia, I just want to remind you that it would be in both our interests if you restricted yourself to building armies for now. I, of course, plan on building only fleets for the immediate future.
Let me know if you plan on moving to Picardy. I haven't yet decided whether or not I want to try convoying there, and I'd hate for us to bounce.

14 Nov 07 Germany: I do not plan on moving to Picardy. Burgundy is my spring target.

15 Nov 07 England: As the map clearly shows, I have decided to turn on Russia. I know you two are allied, so I don't expect any help from you. But you're certainly welcome to Sweden if you want it. I will be convoying an army to Norway this turn, while doing everything I can to hold France off my shores.

Good luck to you, whatever you decide to do.

16 Nov 07 Germany: Why did you attack Belgium? .

16 Nov 07 England: Belgium? What are you talking about? I had no north sea unit, and my channel unit bounced in picardy.

16 Nov 07 England: OMG

I'm so sorry; I had no idea that I had put channel>belgium; it was a misclick. I sincerely apologize.... I had meant to channel>picardy... I just assumed that I had bounced with your belgium>picardy.

.:sigh:. I hope you can forgive me. I realize that was a heinous error to make. )c:

16 Nov 07 Germany: No, You even asked me if I was moving to Picardy. You were under the assumption that I would attack Burgundy with Belgium and leave it open for you. Meaning that you have attacked France, Russia and myself. How do you expect anyone to trust you at this point?

16 Nov 07 England: argh. Don't you see that is PROOF that this was an honest error? Why would I ever choose to attack ALL of my neighbors?

I honestly made a mistake in belgium. I really am sorry about it, and I will certainly do whatever you need me to do to repay my debt. But of all my neighbors, I really was choosing you as my strongest ally.

I hope that we can work this out....

-------------------------------------------

So as you can see I really had no choice but to remove him from the game and pick a new third. After a long debate with Russia we decided that we would contact the player who was doing the worst and help them since a player that had to be carried would pose less of a threat in the second round. (he didn’t realize that I was thinking the same about him as well). Well round one ended with my plan working just fine and I was able to advance to the second round of the tournament.

Round 1 took longer than most had anticipated I think and we lost our organizer. The players who had advanced didn’t want the tourney to end and Wonderlama stepped up big time and took over. Let me stop here for a sec and thank Wonder for doing such a great job of putting the Tournament Website together and organizing the rules for the following two rounds.

Round 2: Points

Round 2 presented a new challenge because each player was to play in two different games and take a combined score from them to get a place in the finals.

Well with 6 games that means that at least one person was going to get in the finals without actually winning a game. So I figured that two 16 point losses would gain someone an almost guaranteed pass into the finals. So I picked a partner in each game and set my plan into action again. I would tell each of my partners that I would let them win in return for allowing me to get 16 points with their victory. Now don’t get me wrong if I had the opportunity to snake the win I would have after all the plan was and always has been to get to the finals.

I picked partners that were at the lower end of the seeding charts again because I figured that in the finals they would be less of a threat to me. In one of the games everything went according to plan and I was able to secure a victory for Chrispminus as Turkey and myself with a 16 point loss as Italy. However in my other game I wasn’t as able to help as I was having problems with a pair of very good players who decided that I was there biggest threat. I don’t know how that happened as I was trying my best to stay under the radar. I think it may have been a mistimed stab at England or me talking some smack to Russia. In any event I was never able to get around to my proposal and helping Ironclad win the game and get him into the finals. (he did that all on his own and was well deserved of his place as an alternate in round 2)

As I was getting wiped out by England I figured my fate was a second round death. But as the round unfolded I was saved by the fact that Wonderlama and Abab were winning both of their games. So now there could be up to three wildcard spots open to non-winners. I did everything I could to survive that game with at least 1 SC to get myself ahead of the competition. It wasn’t enough and I wound up with just my 16 points. If SlkySmoothOtter had pulled out a win in his game then I’d have been out. So by luck and the skin of my teeth I made it into the final spot of the finals. Oh happy day!!!

Round 3: Finals time.

Now that I was in the finals I had to play strait up and try to win. Up to this point I had been able to use gimmicks and ploys to advance but now it was time for the show and I was ready. I pulled a power that I really enjoyed playing as, Turkey. So I set to the game of picking a partner to eventually stab. My first choice was Chrispminus since I figured I could parlay our relationship from the last round into an alliance that would work for at least a few years. He was all set to attack Austria with Abab who was playing as Russia and myself. I thought this was going to go very well. Then it happened. A Key-Laponto. Ohhs Noooes!

By autumn of ’01 I was in a pretty bad spot. Italy and Austria were closing in on me and things were grim. I had no way of fighting back against the two of them it was looking like a quick exit for me. Russia had similar problems as it looked like England and Germany were working together to limit his growth in the north. With 4 powers against 2 things usually go very bad very fast.

Then two different but equally important things happened.

First, Austria did something really crazy. They stabbed Italy. Had Austria keep working with Italy the possibility was there for either of them to win. After Austria stabbed Italy it was easy to convince Italy to hit back at Austria.

The second thing that happened is that with England, Germany, and Italy all looking east France was able to get very strong very quickly. This is when the game got very interesting. As many of you know, with a giant super France knocking at the back door it becomes harder to maintain a steady offense.

Once Russia and I got a foothold I broke things off with Italy and he was kind of forced to work with Austria again. There were a lot of territories that changed hands and everyone took their try at convincing me to stab Russia and help them so they could go fight off the Super France machine that was plundering villages. I’d just watched Austria go from being a powerhouse to backsliding into a position where he was clinging on for dear life all because he was to quick to stab his partner. I felt that the best thing I could do was keep working with the person who had kept me in the game and not stabbed me. Turns out that was a wise choice and as we pushed across the lands our alliance kept working.

Abab and I had talked of our eventual fight and whether or not we should try for a 17/17 or just duke it out. As we pushed I found that it was becoming more and more a dilemma as to what I would do if it was me who had the opportunity to win. When I first had the chance to stab Abab for the win I actually had my moves set in for the stab and was going to steal the win. There was only about 15 minutes left in the phase when I changed it back to a hold order and decided that I would honor my word and not break my alliance.

Like I said I’ve had my chances to win and put this one away but isn’t it just right that the first ever Grand Festive Diplomacy Tournament came down to a 2 player draw?

I know that I wouldn’t be in the position to win without the help of Abab and he deserves as much of the credit for it as I do.

I’ve thought about this decision and my friend at work who has been watching my progress in this tournament for months now and is giving me a lot of guff for not seizing the opportunity to be the sole victor. So much so in fact that he has threatened to hack into my account and make me Win. The competitive nature of some people is so great that they can’t even hear about someone trying to actively work for a tie.

My rebuttal to him had been this.

While I agree that Diplomacy is a game and as such the object of most games is to win. . If the only reason to play this game was to win at all cost then the name would not be Diplomacy it would be Dictatorship. I find deeper meaning in this game. I look at the game as though I was the leader of my people and I have to work with other leaders to protect the future of my people and secure their well being. Just because the game ends and I have an 18 point victory always seemed to me to be to short of a goal. What happens to my people after the game has ended. Do they truly live long and happy lives with no worries? Just because you are the biggest doesn’t mean that you are the most secure nation around. If everyone else still hates you then your future isn’t very secure. I’d hate to think that my people are being attacked by all the people around me who I stabbed or stepped on just to claim that I’m a good leader. I’d much prefer that I can fully trust the other dictators on the board to not be raping and pillaging my people for years after the game has quit updating. The only real solution to this dilemma is to either end the game with a 17/17 split with a player that you can trust to watch over your people of you have to let the game continue until you have control of all 34 SC’s and control the entire free world.

When I tell him all this the best response I get is “You’re a damn hippy role-player and I hate you”

So the real reason I’ve agreed to the 17/17 tie with Abab for the first ever Grand Festive Diplomacy Tournament is just to piss off my friend.

I was hoping to see a winner in this final game, but hats off to your show of honor, Signal. Congratulations to you and abab on a hard fought draw.

I did like your response when I tried to sway you into stabbing Russia:

Spring 1908 Austria - It's 1908. Perhaps if the Juggernaut hasn't made itself dominate at this point, it won't ever. And I doubt you are content sitting in your corner. :)

Spring 1908 Turkey - It's a pretty comfortable corner. There is a barka lounger and a mini-fridge that is fully stocked.

As for my point of view, a couple things happened that changed the game...one of which I think tipped the balance of the game in forever.

One was the stab you mentioned against Italy. I don't perceive this as a mistake as much as the fact that I tried to repair it's effects with Italy and was stabbed twice myself. I had a sitter at that time who negotiated with Russia and made that decision. Unfortunately, my own agenda in wanting to see the Key Lepanto to its end prevented me from seeing the good position he left me with at the time. I think I could have eliminated Italy at that point, perhaps even with your help. But what was done was done.

Then the pivotal moment of the game happened in 1906. By that time, Italy and Germany and I were allied by necessity. I had the opportunity to help them gain on you and Russia by supporting Germany into Warsaw and Italy into Greece.

Italy and I's relationship was rocky to put it mildly. We had finally put the past behind us and ended our bickering at that point. However, I feared a decisive stab from him by mid-game which affected my decision to help them both...so instead, blinded by fear and not being able the consequences of my actions, I chose to help myself into Rumania. <-- and THAT was the pivotal moment which, I think, decided the game which lead to all three of our demises. It was a god-fearing, selfish move to keep up with Italy before he could stab me yet again in the near future. Italy let me have it...and rightly so.

But such is Diplomacy...it's enough to be aware of the important position you are in and to piss on it in favor of a selfish move was a horrible, horrible mistake.

Your patience and dedication to your alliance was grand, Signal. As was abab's. I bow to both of you.

I want to thank all that played and special thanks to thewonderllama for grabbing the reins and organizing this to its end. And to Chrispminis...never have I had such a tumultuous dip relationship than with you in this game. It was great, wasn't it? ;)

I eagerly await GFDT 2008!!

Well i told the story from my point of view and from the press I saw. It's great to hear your side of that stab. When I saw it I wasn't even sure it was real. I was still geeked out by the Key Lepanto and really wasn't sure that Italy would even stab you back. I was still thinking it was an elaborate plan to lure me out of my corner and steal my mini-fridge.

With all the press that went in between Signalseven and me, the reading of his memo above enlightened me and disclosed a view of the tournament of the finals I had not perceived.

Starting from the end, the balance between Signalseven and me was broken after Italy fell, in his favor obviously. Until then neither of us was in a position to take a decisive lead. Then, ironclad units layout was such as to essentially stop me and let Turkey grow. Turkey line against France was much shorter than mine, so Turkey had a number of extra units by the time he started attack on Iberia, And finally, I made very clumsy moves in the north against an excellent tactical player as ironclad (hat off in the face of the way he played his game!). Then the final word on the game outcome became Signalseven's, I recognize that. I can just say that in Diplomacy game, messages must have some weight besides units and maybe mine did say something to Signalseven. But the end of the story is that accepting draw 17/17 has been "his" decision (last minute one, now I know!).
Games have more in them than just final outcome, even if that is possibly solo victory. They bear more profound meanings (possibly different from person to person) for non trivial players.
Signalseven decision made him the "ruler" of this game, I can't help ackowledging that. I am happy we manage to grow a reciprocal trust and appreciation so as to find the way to draw. This is for me part of the "side value" I attach to this game, besides its result.

As for backstage, the start of the finals game has been really great, especially for the "theatre" that Germany, Austria and Italy put on and the extremely subtle messages that went by. When I saw the map in Aut'01 I could not believe my eyes at the Key-Lepanto.
During 1902 I did my best to convince Austria he had much to gain by stabbing italy and luckily enough Darwyn or his sitter (I actually don't know) decided to go that way. Then Signal and I wrote Italy to convince him to stab back and that too worked. So in this case diplomacy managed to defeat a perfect Key Lepanto.
In the meanwhile, the north side was going grey. England kept writing friendly messages, but did nothing to help me against a mounting German hostility, which became open attack after frist couple of years. I think I gave most inspired orders to my very few units in the north in this phase of the game. Yet, the key fact that helped me survive the attack of Germany was not some lucky moves every now and then, and not at all diplomacy (Germany barely dropped me a line during his war at me), it was ironclad, who managed to boldly do something I think can be rarely seen. All alone and without any external help he defeated the joint England and Germany attack. His pression raised and raised until Germany was forced to leave his chocking hold on me. So France raise and pression from the west, Austria selfishness (as well pointed out by Darwyn), Turkey trustfulness and reliability, and (why not) my stubborn will to carry on against all odds of surviving did the little miracle. Germany was pushed back. In a few turns I found to be confronted with France. Then the story seen from Russia angle goes as I wrote above, at the beginning.

Just for fun, I'll share with you an excerpt of how the Key Lepanto went down :) ....

----------------------------------

Italy: Spring 1901: One word. Lepanto. =D
Spring 1901: Maybe a bounce at Trieste?

Austria: Spring 1901: Two words, Key Lepanto. :)

If we are going to do it, let's do it right and fool the hell out of Turkey...how great would it be to pull it off, eh?

------------------------------

Just as I said though, if we were gonna do it, we'd do it right...especially in the finals. Ah well, it was fun getting to the 'prestige' of that move. :)

Thanks for a good game all and congratulations to the (joint) winners. I had a feeling I was up against something more than the usual alliance when Turkey did not immediately stab for the win. Unfortunately this came after I had irreprebly committed myself to conflict with both. I was hoping to sort out a stalemate with Turkey around the Iberian peninsula and leave nowhere else to expand for him than Russian territory. Something that may even have broken down this alliance. Unfortunately it didn't quite work out like that....

Ah, well things were quite a bit different from my perspective on this game, though to be honest, I have a terrible memory in general so I can't exactly remember my thoughts during the early game. It was an incredible game, and I'm very happy to have been able to participate, only saved by a lucky last minute substitute into the second round. I was fairly eliminated from the first round game in a disappointing 4th place, but the absence of one of the players as the 2nd round started gave me a 2nd chance. And I was all to happy to accept Signalseven's offer for a free ticket into the finals, well, almost free.

From the start I had a feeling Signal would be counting on our previous alliance, but I have no such human attachments. =P
So as Darwyn as posted, I quickly proposed a Lepanto, which turned just as quickly into a daring but well executed Key Lepanto. Quite an exciting maneuver. It was with great surprise that I suddenly found myself stabbed for a measly one SC gain... Darwyn informed me it was the sitter's mistake, and although I was mostly sure that it had been a mistake, I couldn't be sure, and this suspicion underlined our "rocky" relationship. I was very disappointed at this turn of events because I had been eager to pull off a Key.

Both abab and Signal say they convinced me to stab Austria, but without taking any of the glamour out of their deft diplomacy, I was quite set on the stab already and was happy to have support from my Eastern neighbours despite having just previously deceived them with a Key. As far as I was concerned the Austria-Italy alliance was over at this point, and while Darwyn was apologetic and sincere I was probably still too angry.

As the Juggernaut grew to be more apparent Darwyn and I would be forced to cooperate despite our erratic history. I was very impressed at this point by Ironclad's tactical play and his use of lone raiders to utterly cripple England. Though, I must admit I was a little disappointed in England's tactical play...

As Austria mentioned, there was one point where France was at peace with Germany, and the three of us were all on the warpath to once and for all end the Juggernaut. Unfortunately, well deserved paranoia caused Austria to act more in the theme of self-preservation than noble last stand. At this point, I exploded, and it was definitely this moment that Darwyn and I shared our more passionate dialogue.

Perhaps it was inevitable but the seeds of discord had been sewn, and as France latched on to the back of Germany, the three of us invariably fell to the superior numbers of the Juggernaut. I must say I was impressed with their commitment to the Juggernaut, at this point, Turkey had almost no armies and any Russian incursion would have been swift and devastating. Yet, Turkey was confident in his choice, and Russia could not be tempted to grab the enormous piece of lemon meringue pie that lay unguarded to his south.

At this point I fell, solidly landing in 4th place. My personal prediction at this point was for a solid Russian win as Turkey still had not built any real land-based force. But this slowly changed as he would build 3 armies in one year, and the shift of France's units to the North would slow Russia down and let Turkey capitalize. To be honest, I was surprised that after Ironclad had singlehandedly tactically outwitted two solid Diplomacy finalists, that he didn't lock up the Mediterranean with a small stalemate. I didn't say anything because I didn't want to tip the game in anyone's favour.

There's still a slight bitter after taste that the game was settled by draw, but on the whole, I am greatly satisfied with the success of the first GFTD and I am honoured to have participated and played with some of the best players this site has to offer.

Chrispminis: I simply said it was easy to sway you. Now granted it was easy because you had already decided on the stab. But I didn't really claim responsibility. Austria deserves full credit for making you stab him. :)

In round 2 you are correct that it was not a handout victory as you played extremely well. If I came across as though you couldn't have won without me I apologize. I was simply stating that we had made a deal and I didn't stab you. Which allowed us both into the finals over some higher rated players.

Haha no worries, you didn't come across as anything other than a very professional player.
