Available games...
When I went to bed last night there were about 32 games I could join, some of them had been listed for a few days already.

When I awoke this morning there were only three (now two), and my points have not changed...

That seems a bit weird.

Feature idea - automatic draws
A lot of the forum is taken up with draw requests, which Kestas doubtlessly has limited time for.... how hard would it be to include a feature whereby every player has an option, in the taskmaster, to "Accept draw" , with the game being automatically drawn if all active players check that option?

(Btw, the link to the "todo list" under "Post a message" points to faq.php instead of roadmap.php....)

I would not ask that question. I have strong views, but won't deny anyone disagree, as we are all individuals, no one more right than the other. I DO however, agree that kestas has the right to remove players and posts. It IS his site after all. He does not have ads so does not make money from here. Also, as his site, he can choose what goes on here. Especially if it brings his game into disrepute. GOOD WORK KESTAS. Some understand.:-)

wawlam59 (0 DX)

@canute
>Because he is politically incorrect. Idiots like him ought to >be reeducated

That's really not a good excuse. Acturally a very bad one. If people with different views of politics or belief should be banned from this site, I would say phpdiplomacy site is not a party sort of thing that kick dissidents and different voices out but a place for all kinds of people from all over the world to play diplomacy. To some extent, the game was meant to bring people together and some have fun together.

If pitirre has been banned for his "anti-US" posts (acturally I don't think he is anti-US enough), I think a better way to solve the problem may be ---- Do not allow any more threads of that kind started, including those anti-US, anti-capitalism, anti-Communisim, anti-any country. (After all, I believe this forum is not created to have people discuss politics.)

But I do feel that ban pitirre himself or herself is not a way with most reason and in fact it is not fair. Not to say for the sake of our site, "pitirre is one of the most interesting players on the site" ---- alamothe.

@VIOLA
>I´m with fraushai, if you don´t like a post delete it Kestas.
>But i think that you can´t kick out people who thinks different

That's the point.

kestas, you have every right to do what is best to this site. And I respect your work and effort on it. It is your site, it is also our site, everyone's site. pitirre seems not like a bad guy or girl, he deserves to enjoy this game and all of this site.

Would you consider readmitting pitirre? Of course on condition that no one will be allowed to start sensitive political threads any more, including pitirre himself.

Can we give him a chance? What do you say guys?

Sean had some ideas about how to handle this ...see his and susequent posts...can we have a set up whereby the political, philosophic and personal are separate from the game posts ?
The site does belong to Kestas and we are guests...and it behoves us to post our views accordingly....after all its called diplomacy for a reason.

I appologize for my mistake, canute. I was meant to say it to fraushai. But do you really need to call me idiot for that mistake? What's more, I have no idea how I abused of VIOLA. I'm pretty clear I agree with VIOLA on this matter.

dangermouse (5551 D)
15 Apr 08 UTC
This is just surmising but:
It was not that he made political posts or the opinions he expressed in them. Kestas stated that off-topic discussions were certainly allowed. The problem was pitirre's continued abuse of the forum. phpDip does not have a robust forum in place and he was drowning out all relevent Diplomacy conversation by beginning many threads, posting in relevent threads to divert them and generally being obnoxious. He was warned, as was Pandora the week before about going overboard. Pandora is apparently a good deal smarter and limited her off-topic posting.
Brutorix (100 D)

Karkand (2167 D)

abgemacht (1076 D(G))

Kestas gave pitirre more than his fair share of warnings. And, quite frankly, I'm sure Kestas has better things to be doing than cleaning this forum of smut and banning and unbanning players at a whim. Pittre's actions were unsettling (if not to the community, then to Kestast himself) and that is enough reason for him to be banned.
This forum is essential to communicate information about the game (bugs, draws, new game notifications) to the moderators. In my opinion, it is very generous of Kestas not to immediately delete anything not directly involving the game.. The fact that there are are a plethora of new threads every day makes it almost impossible to use the forums as intended. Furthermore, almost every political debate inevitably spirals into a flame war; this does not speak highly of our Diplomacy community as a whole.
kestasjk (95 DMod(P))
15 Apr 08 UTC
First off I should note that as long as discussions remain polite and follow common sense I have no problem with any topic I can think of. I didn't ban him because he's anti-US

There was the US government thread, on views about the US govt, and then pitirre posted another thread talking about his views on the US govt. Other threads were posted debating whether the thread was going too far, and at one point there were 5 threads all on the US.
5 threads on one topic is ridiculous, and the threads were becoming very hostile and unpleasant. I cleaned out 3 of the newly created anti-US threads, and warned pitirre not to start up new anti-US threads

He continued to post anti-US troll comments in threads that had nothing to do with the US, I asked him to stop again, and then he posted another anti-US thread about a US scientist who allegedly murdered 8 Puerto Ricans

After being warned twice and not doing what I and many other forum readers asked him to do three times I decided enough was enough, and banned him

So if you went away for a few weeks and came back it might look like an overreaction, since most of the troll threads he started have been deleted, but he did have 3 chances
wawlam59 (0 DX)
15 Apr 08 UTC
pitirre was banned for his continued multi-posted threads of the same topic , without respecting and considering the warnings from webmaster.

I can understand your decision better now. Thank you Kestasjk for making it clear to all. :-)

15 Apr 08 UTC
Yea, its not like Sicarius or Pandora, who have something to say, Piterre was just a troll. We couldn't even have a thread about military history without him bringing in his anti-US comments, it was ridiculous.
GuanShao (537 D)

I can stand Sicarius and Pandora, because they are intelligent. Pitirre just spouted racism and idiocy.
ednos (529 D(S))

I completely agree. you can say the most ridiculous shit and if you argue it intelligently and have real reasons behind it, then I'll respect you. I may disagree with you but at least I'll respect you. but if you argue like you're twelve then I will have a problem

It's all very simple.
Terms of service.
This is a free website and the site owner has full authority to do as he pleases.
Now it is not in his interest to make up stupid rules or to do anything to make the site unpopular.

Banning people for political views is bad for him.
Allowing people to spam the forums or make them unpleasant is bad for him too.

It's a dilemma.

You cannot have censorship and you cannot do without it.
It's all very complicated.
alamothe (3367 D(B))
15 Apr 08 UTC
at least let him play!! :-)
ednos (529 D(S))
15 Apr 08 UTC
It's all very complicated if he needs to censor someone. However, in this case he was merely ridding an intellectual community of an ignorant pest, which is a very simple concept, and the simple action was carried out with beautiful simplicity.
Samael (100 D)
15 Apr 08 UTC
Despite my (extreme) newness to this site, I've got to say I think it was the right decision to ban Pitirre.

When I was looking through the forum to see what kind of people the more active players were, I was quite put off by the irrationality and vehemence of the anti-American feelings (I should add that I am *not* American). It was only when I realised that this vitriol was mainly coming from one person, that my concerns were alleviated.

Pitirre is like the bore one of your friends brings to a party, who spends the entire evening haranguing the other guests about some "pet" topic. The following morning you call your friend and say, "Mate, that guy's really tedious. Could you not bring him along next time?".

And, that's pretty much what Kretas did.
Sicarius (673 D)
15 Apr 08 UTC
with all the christians on this site, that is a pretty horrible name choice.

In response to Sicarius: my thinking was that anyone who knows enough about the relevant theology to understand the reference, would also understand why it is such a good name for a Diplomacy player. After all, Samael's most egregious exploit is believed to be convincing Eve to eat the apple!
Sicarius (673 D)
15 Apr 08 UTC
redbarchetta is pitirre he admitted as much

it's not hard to convince someone who has only ever talked to 1 person, when you lick the ground they walk upon and promise them godhood.

Why would anyone care what Samael's name is? (Note: I am NOT asking for a explanation of the history of the name.) I could have named myself Judas Iscariot, or whatever without people taking offense. In fact, I'm pretty sure there was a Hitler on here for a while. As long as the player doesn't then go on about exterminating the Jews or something there's nothing particularly wrong with it.
