Move from MAO to Spa sc
Hi everyone!

I got a fleet in Mid-Atlantic Ocean and want to move it to Spain south coast, but in the move drop-down list I can only choose Spain and not specify which coast I want to move to. Naturally I wonder why and how I can specify my move.

Thanks in advance!

Have you ever drawn your own country?
I understand the game of Diplomacy was designed by people in the USA, and still one of the major game community hubs is the USA. Still, I wonder, maybe for some of us, loosing Munich means a little more than a supply center...
I actually happen to live in Budapest, my grandfather was born in Austria-Hungary.
I am not trying to penetrate into RL with this thread, yet it may be good for our hobby to reach out for local communities for the sake of some RL gaming?
At least now you know I will defend Budapest as my last stand, especially when I play the Dual Monarchy, LOL...

An open letter to you guys

If you are one person please stop cheating - if you are two people can I please suggest that you don't play the same game because your meta-gaming is so blatant that it is ruining the game for everyone else.

Thanks

Kestas - pause games
I'm going to be away for the rest of this week without internet access, so would it be possible to put the following two games on pause? I have communicated with the players and most think it is a good idea.

Two accounts one player suspected (Mainestream)
It is suspected that the new game Mainestream has two new players that are controlled by the same person (Jake222 and happyboy111). These accounts submited orders at the same time and were created two minutes apart. What is the proper procedure for verifying the IP's are the same for both players and if so a way to replace one? This game hasn't started yet and don't want to invest time in it if there is going to be cheating.

http://www.phpdiplomacy.net/ traffic rank
I checked on http://www.alexa.com/ a few months ago for our traffic rank. It said they don't have any data for the site because it wasn't in the top 1,000,000. but i checked again today and our rank is 259,303! So, does anyone think we'll reach 200,000?

Is this right?
Autumn 1903, Diplomacy: Your army at Silesia was attacked by the army at Warsaw, but your army at Silesia was supporting an attack against the army at Warsaw and the army at Warsaw has no support, so the army at Warsaw failed.

Autumn 1903, Diplomacy: Your army at Silesia's move support wasn't accepted by the unit which support was being given to.

Autumn 1903, Diplomacy: Your army at Prussia attempted to attack the army at Warsaw, but failed.

Autumn 1903, Diplomacy: Your army at Prussia was attacked by the army at Livonia, but sucessfully defended.

Autumn 1903, Diplomacy: Your fleet at Baltic Sea attempted to attack the army at Livonia, but failed.

Why isn't my army attacking accepting support?

Taking over CD countries
Hi.

How common is it for someone to take over a country in civil disorder? If this happens in your games do you welcome it? Do you do it often yourself? Is there a perception that this is done sometimes by multi-accounting people or stooges?

Just trying to get the lie of the land -- thanks.

Moves not being carried out?
Hi there,

I've been filling in for someone whilst they've been away for 3 days, but I think they may well kill me when they return!!!

He asked that I obviously prolong his moves for as long as possible, so that he doesn't miss too many turns whilst he's away - therefore entered the moves and updated, but did not finalize.

HOWEVER.... In a couple of his games his moves were not processed, and he has been dutifully trounced. Not good - and I doubt if he'll be very happy.

Does anyone (or Kestas) know of any problems in updating moves, and not having them processed?

Thanks

Retreats bug?
I am Austria in the game mikes game, URL http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gid=1433. I attacked turkish bulgaria from serbia, with italian support from greece. The attack succeeded, but then Turkey somehow retreated to serbia. That is illegal according to normal rules, and I have never been able to retreat to the territory that displaced me in any other game. What happened?

Missing maps?
I just joined the game HTTP wars (http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gid=1357) and tried to scroll through all the previous maps to watch how the game had played out. For some reason, maps from Autumn 1905 - Autumn 1909 do not appear to be there. Can anyone else see them?

Unconscionable Actions
After agreeing to a Draw / Tie game the other guy attacks you...this is rather low and i think the person should be publicly shamed.

Backstabbing and all the rest is part of the game (a good part) but this is different in my view.

The player was daniele.

red cross - sign of standoff?
Could you explain something? Sometimes I see a red x on some empty province and/ or body of water. I figured it is the sign that a standoff has just taken place there. But in some cases, when a standoff should have happened, I do not see the red cross.
So what is going on?
Thank you.

Two newbie questions
Hi.

Still in my first game (1902), so the answers to these two questions will probably become clear enough when the fur starts flying.

But anyway: 1) is there any way to tell what actions others have taken once orders are carried out? For example, suppose that the Turkish army in Rumania supports the Russian army in Ukraine in their move to Galicia. But at the last minute the Russian player changes his mind and does not order the move Ukraine -> Galicia. If I am playing as neither Russia nor Turkey, is there any way for me to tell what happened? Let's say I'm Austria and I'd like to know that my Turkish ally is not to be trusted any more.

The reason I ask is that it seems this would be obvious in a face-to-face game, as the orders would all be read out aloud, even the unsuccessful ones. Is this lack of knowledge just an inherent difference in the online version?

Question 2: probably very basic, but let's say I'm playing as England and I have a fleet in Norway. Russia attacks me from St. Petersburg with support from Sweden. At the same time, my German ally in Denmark attacks the Russian army in Sweden. What happens? Is the Russian support effectively cut, and therefore no moves succeed?

OK, what if the situation is similar but the Russian attack comes from Sweden with support from St Petersburg. What now? Does the Russian attack succeed this time?

Thanks for any help.

I'm new to playing Diplomacy, and not excellent about remembering to check every day. Is it possible for the software to send reminder emails about current games (This round has been processed, your next action is due by this time).

Countrys' Win Ratios
I remember an old thread that showed the winning percentages for each power, and I wanted to investigate that topic again. Unfortunately, most of the finished games can't be seen (by me at least) and I wondered if anyone else could access them and figure this out, as it is different from postal Diplomacy numbers.

Alert other players playing with together, liopic and Ramonacus
BEWARE! These two have been playing together in almost all the games that they have played on this site.
fastspawn (1625 D)
16 Jul 07 UTC
it doesn't really mean anything. if 3 people join at the same time, they will join as many games as possible. Since Open games are limited, they will probably join 5 or 6 games together.

What counts is their actions in the games.
Sun_Tzu (2116 D)

They said they are friends.
fastspawn (1625 D)
17 Jul 07 UTC
yeah, but friends shouldn't be banned from playing. Its just that they shouldn't metagame. Do they give each other SCs in different games?

Again I advocate, people should be prevented from joining games which contains another player whom they are playing with.
Ryoshi (100 D)
17 Jul 07 UTC
@fastspawn -
And again I disagree.

There are just not enough active players for that. You'd need 60 completely active players to make sure that your ten games didn't lag, and frankly that's not going to happen. I understand the arguments against multiaccounting and metagaming, but this wouldn't help at all. People will metagame if they want to - it sucks but it's the truth. And as far as multiaccounting goes, that would just make multis impossible to detect since it would force cheaters to have more than one multi. It's a lot easier to tell if one person is consistently playing two Players if he only has two screennames - once he starts rotating between ten there's just no chance of it.

Preventing multiple games with the same person would just be a silly extra limit and would have no real effect on the problems we're having.
Pong (236 D)
17 Jul 07 UTC
Liopic claims to know Ramonacus in real life.

The way one tells multiaccounts, metagames, and honest mates apart is by the chatlog while they're cooperating side by side... or the lack of a chatlog. Make the chatslogs of finished games publicly viewable. Then metagaming loses its main channel, and a multiaccounter would have to fake so much dialog it just wouldn't be worthwhile - and it would be *hilarious* if he got caught anyway.
aoe3rules (949 D)

i agree with Ryoshi.
fastspawn (1625 D)

The point is this. I feel that a person shouldn't join more than 5 games at a time. The very fact that you stated a person will have problems joining 10~ games at a time shows a strange weltanschauung when it comes to joning games.

When one plays pen and paper or by mail diplomacy, one doesn't joing multiple games. This is why all our games run very slowly, because everyone else is busy with other games...
Chrispminis (916 D)

*cough* Point system that progressively penalizes playing with the same players. *cough*
Pong (236 D)
17 Jul 07 UTC
This would discourage us from joining groups based on play style. For example, I'll play again and again with committed players - who don't drop out. Alternately, one could say I'll avoid irresponsible players. That proposed system makes selection a sort of crime.

Any arguments against opening up the chatlogs for finished games?
fastspawn (1625 D)
17 Jul 07 UTC
But the thing is that sometimes i would like to keep important parts of my chatlog closed. It is important for strategy. Having the chatlog open after a session will also raise an important issue on whether each game is independant as people see your playing style clearly early on from previous games.
Pong (236 D)
17 Jul 07 UTC
True, while it kills private metagaming, it creates a common metagame (reputation) - for those who'd bother researching the logs.

I suppose people do see how ridiculous a multiaccount would look on chatlog, as the person tried to fake verbal exchanges. Few cheaters would take playing with themselves to that extreme.

I think the best solution is one that makes successful cheating too much bother.

How about automatically opening the chat logs post-game *just to those who played* and *just for 24hrs*? Or something like that.
Ryoshi (100 D)
17 Jul 07 UTC
I like that idea, Pong - though keeping the chatlogs on the server for a month or so (privately) for checking to see if players are separate might be a good idea.
haloace (100 D)
17 Jul 07 UTC
i would recommend a selection at game creation that allow turning message archiving on/off.
Chrispminis (916 D)
18 Jul 07 UTC
@Pong, to elaborate on that points system...

You would only really play people with similar ranks, so assuming you are a responsible player, you are likely to do better than irresponsible players, and as such would be able to move up the points system and play with other responsible players based on their ranking. Selection of who you play IS is a form of meta-gaming, because you are bringing outside knowledge into the game, but of course, it's hard to not do such a thing, and inactivity is universally looked down upon.
opripom (2853 D)
18 Jul 07 UTC
I wouldn't like my privacy to be violated, so I say „NO” for opened chatlogs in the post-game period. Although a count of the messages sent from one country to another might just do the trick. :)
TOgilvie (845 D)
18 Jul 07 UTC
I agree with opripom. My chatlogs are for the intended reciprient only. Seeing that such messages had been sent, if not the content, would be a valid compromise.
dangermouse (5551 D)
19 Jul 07 UTC
Not to change the topic, but I think it would be extremely interesting to be able to see all of the chatlogs for some games and to see how the games play out. It wouldn't even matter who was controlling the countries.

There are some games which have dissappeared off the bottom of the completed games page. If Kestas had a bunch of extra free time he could use the logs from them (that way no one could go back and search the game records to identify the players).
aoe3rules (949 D)
19 Jul 07 UTC
i agree with opripom & dangermouse.
dangermouse (5551 D)
19 Jul 07 UTC
I don't agree with fastspawn's original suggestion. But if it were enacted, I think private games should not count towards this limit
aoe3rules (949 D)
20 Jul 07 UTC
dangermouse: that would defeat the point. then everyone would have 7 accounts and make their own games.
fastspawn (1625 D)
20 Jul 07 UTC
yeah but they would only play with themselves, so it won't matter to us. I am just looking for a good game without metagamers, not ranking and all that stuff
dangermouse (5551 D)
20 Jul 07 UTC
who cares if they make their own games? So long as they're not cheating against other people it doesn't matter in the least.
Sirch (613 D)
20 Jul 07 UTC
I'm in a couple of games with Ramonicus, and would have no objections to playing games with him in the future, to accuse him of metagaming and warn us all is unnecessary. We can all decide for ourselves who to play with, and who to avoid. As for seeing chatlogs, I would be extremely interested to see others, but I think it should not be allowed, diplomatic envelopes should always remain out of sight of potential enemies.
Sirch (613 D)
20 Jul 07 UTC
I apologise to Ramonacus for spelling his name incorrectly. Sorry if it caused any confusion. :)
Ramonacus (159 D)
23 Jul 07 UTC
No apologise needed, Sirch. I've realised just now that we are playing two games together, and in both of them I am Austria (eecs...).
One last thing, if I said nothing before it is because I am getting old, and don't like anymore discussing silly accusations of "metagaming" in the internet. Anybody can see that I've played three times with Liopic, it is true. BUT if you analise those games you could see that in two of them we had no contact until the game was advanced, and the other one we were warring from the very beginning.
And those were my last words in this thread. Thank you.
markusaurelius (137 D)
28 Jul 07 UTC
I think that a count of messages sent between players as well as an observation of whether one eventually attacked the other in several games and the amount of games the two user names are in together might together point out suspicious accounts. If two players never message, never attack each other (even near game ends), and do this in many games, suspicion should be raised.
