So here's an idea.
What if there were accounts dedicated solely to taking over CDs? The main reason I don't do it is because I don't want my rating to suffer for somebody else's stupidity. Am I alone in this?

The United States attacked IS forces in Syria last night.
Discuss: too late, or just in time from an American perspective? Too early perhaps? What about their coalition with Saudi Arabia? Lots to discuss.

Looking for someone to take over Germany and Austria.
This game (http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=146899) was apparently a mess when I joined. Lots of missing players allowed others to benefit. The currently missing players are Germany and Austria. Having an unbalanced game is much less fun, so I'm wondering if someone would like to join.

Next phase is in 14 hours.

NFL Pick 'em Week 3: Fast Starts and False Starts
So...um...we start Week 3 a little late...but as the Falcons just proved everyone who thought the Bucs had even a chance of being good this year 56 kinds of wrong, no harm done. ;) The 2-0 Bills take on the 1-1 Chargers in a game that could be better than it has any right to be, Peyton looks for redemption vs. Richard "Totally Not Exposed" Sherman and the Seahawks, and my Niners attempt to rebound from...ahem...Romo-ing on SNF vs. the Bears. Week 3...Pick 'em!!!

I checked the FAQs on this but either missed or overlooked how the players get linked to a country. Is this done by random assignment or ? Also I have six players for a game and want the game to kick off with Italy in CD. Did I miss something in the new game set up to make this happen? Game is called "Over the Top!"

Pausing in Anon Gunboats?
Hello lovely community, it's been years since I've played a gunboat match but I'm craving one again. However I know I'm going to be away a weekend soon, what are the official or unwritten rules so to speak on Gunboat pausing? Is it reliable if I want some time away, or shall I wait until I get back before starting a new game? Advice would be lovely. Thanks :)

Training Game!
Hey Diplomats,

I'm a teacher and I'm currently introducing one of my favorite students to Diplomacy. To avoid metagaming, I'd like to start a Classic game in which all the players are just starting out and want a place to feel free to ask questions and generally be a little less intense than usual. The game link is here: http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=147658
The password is "new".

Facebook and Death
So, my cousin, who is about 5 years younger than me, dropped dead today....literally. Shocking, horrible...I'm a bit traumatized. I have vilified Facebook in the past for various reasons...and yet today found comfort in the ability to share his life, to explore his life through his page, and grieve instantly with friends and family near and far.
So what are your thoughts about Facebook in this respect?

As we're getting to results I thought I'd put up a thread for the final scores. Frankly as it wasn't really intended to be serious, I never thought about putting a scoring system together across the 7 games, but if anyone is that bothered, they're welcome to do so!

So that Scottish independence was a storm in a teacup, the Scottish when it came down to it didn't have the balls to go for it ..... 45% Yes, 55% No

Move along, nothing to see here......

What happens when the Brits don't fulfil their promise to scotland for if they won? Because they can't fulfil the promise, considering they don't have the constitution they'd need for it.

They were empty promises born out of panic from a rogue poll that showed the YES Campaign with 51% ..... Cameron, Clegg, Milliband, when shall we 3 meet again, in Airdrie, Perth or in Dunblane. All 3 feeble politicians...Scotland deserve more, so does the rest of the UK.
NigeeBaby (100 D(G))

But more interestingly the issue of an English assembly has gained momentum since the promises were made ..... Cameron has been busy since negotiating with his back benchers on what he can give away, they are angry that he didn't speak to them before he started writing cheques he wasn't sure whether he could cash

So now that the Scottish question is resolved, the world turns its eyes to the Netherlands, where, in a kafkaesque turn of events, a young man called steephie22 is anxiously awaiting his indictment for sitting next to a drug addict.

The three party leaders of the No campaign visiting Scotland was fascinating. I think Cameron did exceptionally well and greatly exceeded expectations by not making anything significantly worse. Clegg surpassed himself by being even more invisible than usual. Special praise should be reserved for Ed Miliband who achieved what many thought impossible... Making Gordon Brown look like a great leader...

I think that was a succinct and accurate summation .... the best bit for me was that to get some rapport with the Scottish voters Cameron had to describe his party as the 'effing Tories', a damning indictment of Tory attitudes and policies towards the Scottish people for many a year. Anyways the Westminster bubble has been temporarily burst by the Scots Yes campaign, well done to them :-)

A generation, that means at least 16 years...

I've seen the geographical break down; but i'd love to see an age profile.

Glasgow voted yes, but also had one of the lowest turnouts (over 70%, pretty decent turnout by normal measures)

I like the the belgians and catalonians are silent, whereas the Basque leadership have hailed the result as a victory for democracy, saying they now want the chance to have the same vote.

I recall seeing a poll of 16-17 year olds from a year ago that suggested they were less likely to vote for independence than your average Scot. It stuck in the mind because it was quite surprising. No idea if that held true in the actual vote, though, and people change their views as they age so you couldn't use it to extrapolate a result in 20 years anyway.

I see no reason why the referendum can't be used as template for other European regions. When in doubt, trust the people

Octo you know the next time that phrase 'better together' will be rolled out don't you ..... I think that one phrase could help the Tories fight off the infidels, I mean UKIP of course and all of the rabid right-wing Euro-Sceptics.
'The UK and EU ..... Better Together' mark my words, remember you heard it hear first. And guess who will head up the campaign for the Tories, I think you know....
Octavious (2701 D)
19 Sep 14 UTC
You mean you've finally decided to come out and release the inner Conservative? I'm proud of you, Nigs. I think you're a bit optimistic if you think they'll let you lead the campaign, but I've been wrong before so don't let me dampen your enthusiasm!

NigeeBaby (100 D(G))

You know what pro-European will head up the 'better together' campaign .... come on don't be coy
I suspect that there were scads of Scottish Tories who haven't voted in years who gave it a go this time around because there was finally an election where they had a chance to vote in a close election.
Octavious (2701 D)
19 Sep 14 UTC
@ Nigs

I genuinely don't think so. The better together campaign placed an emphasis on our nations being equals working to mutual benefit. I suspect the EU campaign will develop a subtle narrative of Europe almost being subservient, and be more along the lines of "making Europe work for you". Less about a glorious community of nations, and more about what we can get out of it and how we made it happen.
"Update: Alex Salmond has resigned."
I'm, frankly, very surprised. Is his position within the government or the party really that weak? Or was he always nothing more an independence guy and now that that's not an option, there's nothing more for him?
Octavious (2701 D)
19 Sep 14 UTC
I suspect Alex is rather looking forward to a bit of a rest. He has been in the front lines for the best part of 20 years. He has had his shot, given it a damned good fight, and left his party in a good position. It is the ideal time to hand over the reigns to someone else. Parties that keep the same leader for too long tend to suffer as it stifles natural development within the party and gives the impression that they're a one man band to the general public.
phil_a_s (0 DX)
19 Sep 14 UTC
I agree with Octavious. Alex Salmond has wanted to resign before. His major campaign was power to Scotland/referendum/independence. He got promises of power. I don't think he would have kept on if he had won either. What would he even do now?
Putin33 (111 D)
19 Sep 14 UTC
I used to think he was a bit of an opportunist but he has steadily won me over. His resignation here is the right move and the statesmanlike move.

Well done, Mr. Salmond. You had a great innings.
"I suspect Alex is rather looking forward to a bit of a rest." (Octavious)
Figures I would have overlooked the obvious reason. Thanks, Octavious.
