The Automated Revolution
So the other day I came upon this video by CGP Grey about automation and the future of humanity: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Pq-S557XQU
So, how do you feel about the increasing automation in our world? Relieved? Terrified? Unsure? And what is humanity to do about it?

A Message from the Queen of America
Here goes....

1. The letter 'U' will be reinstated in words such as 'colour,' 'favour,' 'labour' and 'neighbour.' Likewise, you will learn to spell 'doughnut' without skipping half the letters, and the suffix '-ize' will be replaced by the suffix '-ise.' Generally, you will be expected to raise your vocabulary to acceptable levels. (look up 'vocabulary').

------------------------

2. Using the same twenty-seven words interspersed with filler noises such as ''like' and 'you know' is an unacceptable and inefficient form of communication. There is no such thing as U.S. English. We will let Microsoft know on your behalf. The Microsoft spell-checker will be adjusted to take into account the reinstated letter 'u'' and the elimination of '-ize.'

-------------------

3. July 4th will no longer be celebrated as a holiday.

-----------------

4. You will learn to resolve personal issues without using guns, lawyers, or therapists. The fact that you need so many lawyers and therapists shows that you're not quite ready to be independent. Guns should only be used for shooting grouse. If you can't sort things out without suing someone or speaking to a therapist, then you're not ready to shoot grouse.

----------------------

5. Therefore, you will no longer be allowed to own or carry anything more dangerous than a vegetable peeler. Although a permit will be required if you wish to carry a vegetable peeler in public.

----------------------

6. All intersections will be replaced with roundabouts, and you will start driving on the left side with immediate effect. At the same time, you will go metric with immediate effect and without the benefit of conversion tables. Both roundabouts and metrication will help you understand the British sense of humour.

--------------------

7. The former USA will adopt UK prices on petrol (which you have been calling gasoline) of roughly $10/US gallon. Get used to it.

-------------------

8. You will learn to make real chips. Those things you call French fries are not real chips, and those things you insist on calling potato chips are properly called crisps. Real chips are thick cut, fried in animal fat, and dressed not with catsup but with vinegar.

-------------------

9. The cold, tasteless stuff you insist on calling beer is not actually beer at all. Henceforth, only proper British Bitter will be referred to as beer, and European brews of known and accepted provenance will be referred to as Lager. South African beer is also acceptable, as they are pound for pound the greatest sporting nation on earth and it can only be due to the beer. They are also part of the British Commonwealth - see what it did for them. American brands will be referred to as Near-Frozen Gnat's Urine, so that all can be sold without risk of further confusion.

---------------------

10. Hollywood will be required occasionally to cast English actors as good guys. Hollywood will also be required to cast English actors to play English characters. Watching Andie Macdowell attempt English dialect in Four Weddings and a Funeral was an experience akin to having one's ears removed with a cheese grater.

---------------------

11. You will cease playing American football. There is only one kind of proper football; you call it soccer. Those of you brave enough will, in time, be allowed to play rugby (which has some similarities to American football, but does not involve stopping for a rest every twenty seconds or wearing full kevlar body armour like a bunch of nancies).

---------------------

12. Further, you will stop playing baseball. It is not reasonable to host an event called the World Series for a game which is not played outside of America. Since only 2.1% of you are aware there is a world beyond your borders, your error is understandable. You will learn cricket, and we will let you face the South Africans first to take the sting out of their deliveries.

--------------------

13.. You must tell us who killed JFK. It's been driving us mad.

-----------------

14. An internal revenue agent (i.e. tax collector) from Her Majesty's Government will be with you shortly to ensure the acquisition of all monies due (backdated to 1776).

---------------

15. Daily Tea Time begins promptly at 4 p.m. with proper cups, with saucers, and never mugs, with high quality biscuits (cookies) and cakes; plus strawberries (with cream) when in season.

God Save the Queen!

I'm ok with everything except #6. Fuck roundabouts right in the ear. We Americans can barely handle intersections and merging as separate activities. And you want us to now do it at the same time? You must have a very sick sense of humour.
dyager_nh (619 D)
15 Aug 14 UTC
How can I kill a Redcoat with a vegetable peeler?

I suppose I could kill a few when I try merging on these roundabout things. Ah crap, at $10 a gallon, I couldnt rightly afford a car so thats out.

Perhaps we could hope they choke on their chips crisps and biscuit cookies.
dyager_nh (619 D)
15 Aug 14 UTC
Clearly we Americans will be open to recolononization by the Redcoats if we follow these new rules.

On a side note, all of the British actors on TV are busy being judges on our reality shows. Nothing brokers respect for judgemental opinions like a British accent apparently.

To reciprocate Britain will do the following with immediate effect:

1) Start calling the last letter of the alphabet by it's correct name, "zee".
2) Ban every sentence without an actual subject, such as "Every little helps".
3) Stop offering to put butter on any sandwich (even tuna).
4) Behave in a way that does not require being kept in separate cages at sporting events.
5) Stop giving every single vegetable at the supermarket it's own individual plastic wrapper and price tag. (Even cucumbers! I realize an orange is a precious commodity in a country without sun, but I know you can grow cucumbers there. Just pile them up.)
6) Get rid of the "first class" service on the Heathrow Express. Seriously, "first class" travel on a short train ride from the airport? What's in that first class car?
7) Stop calling arugula "rocket"
8) Sell shoes in increments of half-sizes, instead of getting the shoe within a yard of the person's foot size and calling it "close enough"
9) Learn how to make a god damn hamburger
10) Provide pedestrian right-of-ways in the countryside that don't involve having your legs impaled by thorns, and threats from farmers
11) Pronounce a "T" like a "T" instead of a "CH" when faking an American accent. We can tell who you are, and if you were German instead of English, Bruce Willis would shoot your ass in an elevator.
ag7433 (927 D(S))

@NigeeBaby exactly
Jamiet99uk (808 D)

@ tendmote:

The phrase "every little helps" has been in use for hundreds of years, with the earliest documented example I could find dating from 1602. "Every little" is a noun phrase, and technically "little" is the subject in the sentence.

Also, what is wrong with buttering the bread when making sandwiches?
Jamiet99uk (808 D)
15 Aug 14 UTC
Finally, you guys have only been calling salad rocket "argulua" since about 1960. The name "salad rocket" (often shortened to "rocket" in use) was the established common name for that particular vegetable for a long time before that.
dyager_nh (619 D)
15 Aug 14 UTC
In what world can a fancy lettuce be called a rocket? Rockets take men to the stars.

Butter does not belong on a sandwich unless it is being grilled. God gave man Mayonaise.
Jamiet99uk (808 D)
15 Aug 14 UTC
It's from the French "roquette".

@ Dyager: So you'd make a cheese and pickle* sandwich using cheese, pickle, and mayonnaise?

dyager_nh (619 D)

@ Jamie : A sandwich requires meat.
The only two exceptions to this are : Grilled Cheese or Peanutbutter/Jelly sandwich.

I dont know what a chutney is but it sounds gross so I think that definately out.

You know historically Americans held British culture in extremely high esteem. But after so many generations of being looked down on, and treated like everything in our culture is either insignificant or stupid, I think we are becoming disillusioned.
Braillard (201 D)

Stop fighting guys, because you should all start going further back and adopt the french culture : Englishmen are really Frenchmen that lived on an island for too long and forgot to evolve with the rest of the continent and then those guys went out of their island to a new world they could fill with nonsense! You are all french... "rocket" is from a french word, "mayonaise" also, and to top it off even fries are french..

simply accept it and start putting a space between a word and a "?", "!", ":"
e.g. How are you ? I am very good thank you ! As listed below :

Germany: Hey england lets go fight _______
England: Okay, is America coming?
Germany: Na, he has some issues in the middle east but we can handle this.
England: i dont know maybe we should wait for....
USA: Sup guys?
England: Want to join me and germany? we are about to ....
USA: Wait. Dont I call the shots?
Germany: I'm out. America's a prick
England: Well yea US but we just thought...
USA: thats the problem you thought. What did I tell you about thinking?
England: You said "Thinking isn't your strong suit, you thought appeasement with Hitler would work. leave the thinking to me."
USA: Good boy. Now come with me, I need you to help spread the government type that we created when we left you to governments that are similar to what you had in 1776.
England: Okay. Can I sit in the front seat of the tank?
USA: Only if you make me happy.
England: Like last time?
USA: Like last time.
England: But that hurts the back of my throat.
USA: Here *hands cough drop*
England: slurpping sounds
USA: was that a good hotdog?
England: yes, your cooks are by far the supreme creators of hotdogs.
USA: good. Now get in.

Hi. My name is: Noob.
I'm new to both Diplomacy and webDiplomacy, so I'm having a hard time figuring out the support-hold and support-move system. I have a rough understanding of how it works just based off the tutorials I've been watching online on the game, and reading through the basic rules, but I CANNOT figure out how to order units to support-hold and support-move, which order I need to command the units in order for the support command to be available and such. more>

I understand that I will lose the points, but how do I withdraw from a game. I have two going and I accidently signed up for the game Diplomacy20 with first moves to be submitted tonight. I am already involved in the games Drawn Out and August Rumble, but I don't want to play in a third simultaneously at this time.

Thanks.
