Worst game I've ever played
gameID=103663

I took over a cd country and none of the others players will speak to me, not one word despite me making several attempts. I've played with one of the players before and he's generally a dick. Then mod comes in pauses the game and then cancels it, because of u fair play, but no one gets banned, and mod won't discuss it further.

Why don't more people play at vdiplomacy.com?
Just wondering. That website has a lot less games going on (especially live games) but has a much better variety of variants, better interface, easier contact with the mods (maybe not always better, but easier to access) and has statistics on all variants, performances, has NMR policy and reliability ratings...

Basically, why do we play here and not there? I mean I play both, but why is this one the clear favorite?

Diplomacy on a randomly-generated map
Has anyone ever thought about this? I think it could add an interesting new element if the map were generated fresh each time, giving an edge to players who could quickly grasp "the lay of the land," as it were. Of course, coming up with an algorithm that would consistently generate balanced and fun maps could prove tricky, but I see no reason why it shouldn't be possible.

Programming request
In password-entry games, could we include an option to allow CD takeovers by players who don't know the password? IF NOT, could we allow people looking to take over a new country to filter out password-protected games in their search?

Why can't you use correct spelling, capitalization, punctuation, and grammar? You consistently butcher one, two, three, or all four of these categories, and it makes your posts unreadable. They become sound and fury signifying nothing. Please, for the good of the forum, follow standard orthography.

No in-game messaging games with messages
Currently if you're in a "No in-game messaging" game, there's no way to get rid of a global message. This means that the games always show up with the unread message icon at the top of the page, which is really annoying. As far as I can tell, there's no way to mark these messages as read. This state occurs when a player in the game is banned, which adds a global message that cannot be read. Please fix!

Unpause
Hey guys, I'm back!

Also, is the "unpause" button generally broken? I paused two games so I could go have surgery, and neither of them will register a hit on the "unpause" button?

Classic Diplomacy - not year 1901
What year is the Classic Diplomacy set? Definitely not year 1901AD, by then Tunis was already colonized by France. Luxemburg was an independent nation, Albania didn't border Austria and the United Kingdom didn't own Iceland. The was also no bridge between Sweden and Denmark. Everyone else can claim some independence on that map.

It's a reenactment or world war I. The clock is set to 1901 instead of 1914 for convenience. Some changes are made to the map for convenience as well. Luxemburg is a rebellious Dutch province, all its base are belong to us. Hope that helps.
This is the map of Europe from 1914.,right before the world war I.,with few exceptions only because of the balance of the powers in the game.
Luxemburg is missing here but it was independent, the same as Montenegro which is between Albania and the south-east border of Austria (Habsburg Monarchy). Denmark owned Iceland (untill 1918),Russia owned Finland and Poland, the same as Baltic states and France owned Tunis, the same as Algeria and Morroco (except the Tanger region owned by Spain).
There are some changes about neutrals - Swe,Nor,Den,Hol and Spa were neutrals but Portugal,Belgium,Serbia,Greece and Bulgaria made part of the "Triple Entente" (Fra,Eng,Rus) together with Italy (which stabbed Germany and Austria as the war started) and Bulgaria joined "the Central powers" (the bad guys - Ger,Aus and Ita originaly).
I don't remember about the bridge though...
* "...but Por,Bel,Ser,Gre and Rumania...". Sorry.

The bridge between Denmark and Sweden was build in year 2000, so it was def not there in 1914. However, the sea between is so narrow it can be crossed swimming. The Swedish army even crossed the ice once..

As for World War 1, you missed Rumania which was an ally. Also I would hardly argue that the entente were the good guys.

While it is true that the war started because Ferdinand was killed by Serbian terrorists, it is also true that tensions were rising preceding that assassination and it was only a matter of time before war started.

After the German unification, Britain and France feared the resulting shift in power and adopted efforts to contain her. This caused the increased tensions in Europe that would eventually lead to world war 1.

it is not set in the real world. It is a board game which approximates the power dynamics between different european empires, kingdoms and a republic.

It is set after the Napoleonic wars and before the first world war, before the new alliances have become set in stone - this allows a more flexible game. Flux is the basic idea....

"While it is true that the war started because Ferdinand was killed by Serbian terrorists, it is also true that tensions were rising preceding that assassination and it was only a matter of time before war started."

No, it is true that the excuse given for starting the war was Ferdinand being killed by Serbian nationalists - following the german and italian examples of forming a nation based on ethnic background. But the powers in europe at the time were in an unstable state, power was held by individuals and governments who saw war as a natural and desirable resolution - the european people largely didn't want war, and would likely have preferred a peaceful economic expansion and growth... (for example the Irish also had nationalist organisations forming in an attempt to achieve independence from the United Kingdom, totaling ~104,000 volunteers, 100,000 of them went to fight for 'the small countries' in the British army, 4,000 organised the 1916 easter rising, which was a complete military failure... I imagine that those 100,000 men would have been happy with a negotiated peace, considering the British parliament had passed a law guaranteeing Ireland home rule - and this was a big factor in them joining the war effort on the side of the British)

The borders can be dated to those between the Second Balkan War and the First World War, sans Montenegro, Luxembourg and the microstates.
