Lord of Ultima
This was a thread in Vdip, but me, King Atom, and Drano019 is thinking of starting a Lord of Ultima, Webdip alliance. For those who know how to play, we are probably going to be starting as soon as a new English Server is opened... For those who don't know how to play, Server 60 would be a good experience-gathering game

Split Coast Fleet Movements
Hi, board. I have a question regarding fleet movements including territories with two unique coasts:
E_03 (303 D)

Put the case that there is a fleet on a particular coast of a province, and another fleet occupying an adjacent territory...
For sake of an example (not the real case, honestly), let's say the two territories are Spain and Portugal. The first fleet exists on the north coast of Spain and the other fleet is in Portugal. Why don't the orders
The Fleet at Spain (North Coast) move to Portugal
and
The Fleet at Portugal move to Spain (South Coast)
go through?

I was hoping someone has an answer for me since a similar case happened to me in a World Diplomacy game and I protest because by nature of movements, the two fleets need never meet or cross paths.

I've read parts of the rulebook online accessible via the FAQ, and the only explanation I can think of is that units can't exchange places and a fleet occupying a unique coast of a province is said to occupy the whole province. But... I don't know..

Can someone offer a better explanation or affirm my speculation? As much as I'd like to formally protest, I won't/can't the nature of my inquiry is moreso for clarification. Obviously I'd not think to make the same mistake twice but I'd like to know exactly what was wrong in the first place...

Thank you, in advance.

Your explanation is correct. The rules specifically forbid two units from exchanging places, and Spain/sc and Spain/nc are considered to be the same location for this purpose.

You're not alone in getting stumped by this. It's a pretty common mistake. But the site is executing the orders correctly. This rule is pretty universal among other online sites and it is the way I've always seen it adjudicated in FTF games.

In my opinion this is the same reason that it is LEGAL to order:

Fleet Marseilles SUPPORT Fleet Gascony to Spain/north coast.

Marseilles can't get to Spain/north, but it can get to Spain/south, and since Spain is all one place the support is legal. Some people disagree with me on that one though.

Regardless of "online sites" it is the rules of the original *boardgame* that this is still considered switching places and can't be done. You all do know this is a boardgame from the 60s, right?

yeah, but i'm sure i could 'miss-interpret' this order in a face-to-face adjudication... you know, if that was going to help my cause :p

actually since i've ordered such a thing (probably with a fleet and army rather than two fleets... ) i might have simple made a mistake in a manual adjudication...

@Draug: I find it slightly sad that having an algorithm adjudicate takes some of the charm of making and arguing in favor of a ridiculous move out of the game, such as building a fleet in Moscow for instance http://www.diplom.org/~diparch/resources/humour/coast_moscow.htm
Dys Claimer (116 D)

Indeed. But pointing out that everyone else online adjudicates it the same way is helpful evidence that we're doing it right.

haha santosh, that article made me laugh.
The article was really good, and while I've understood the whole Spain coast. I do have a question about the Bulgaria and St. P coasts... and I'll admit I'm being lazy about not reading the rules but I didn't start this thread... So my question is if I had a fleet on the south coast of Bulgaria that was giving support to a fleet in say Greece I realize an army moving to Bulgaria could cut the support but could a fleet from the Black Sea cut the support since it would have to move to the north coast. My speculation is that it would cut support but this seems more odd than the whole Spain/Portugal trading of spaces.

It does cut the support for sure. Your boats on the south coast were alarmed by the Black Sea ports getting shelled and had to calm the citizenry.

Very likely France and Germany are communicating/cheating. No reason why two people with 10 builds bordering each other would still be just chilling out sipping pina coladas like this.

Funny this should even be an issue in the year 2012...JC Penny will keep her on, but what does this say about the state of LGBT Rights in America?

Is this type of post allowed?
I am currently in a game with a terrible ally. Let me be more specific: they're not an evil stabber or an incompetent strategist, but they are simply a terrible ally. I don't know how else to describe it. I'm talking possibly the worst teammate I've ever had in any game, Diplomacy or other. Is it improper to discuss this here if I don't use names?
