You can't hide from Cspan
Cspan is a perfect example of good government in action.
Government sold airwaves to private companies with the admonition that the private companies who purchased the airwaves would broadcast public events to the public. In other words transparency.

App for diplomacy
Is the iPhone app for webdiplomacy any good? Like is it attached to this website?
dubmdell (556 D)

Could you post a link?
orathaic (1009 D(B))
20 Jan 12 UTC
all i can see in the app store is 'the game of diplomacy' by chris hughes. Not affiliated with webdip as far as i know...
orathaic (1009 D(B))
20 Jan 12 UTC
though the link provided leads to the facebook implementation of webdip, still called phpdiplomacy, so it is forked from webdip.

Fozzy Brrr...: What do you think of Droidippy? i downloaded it a few months ago, but haven't started any games.

Does anyone here use Droidippy?
Celticfox (100 D(B))
26 Jan 12 UTC
I use it.
I actually do have Droidippy. I've only played one game on it, but it has a pretty good interface. Notifications on your phone when another power sends you a message! Intense.
Celticfox (100 D(B))
26 Jan 12 UTC
And it's decent. But it's always press games, no variations allowed atm. But for being a free game it's consistently being updated and is better then a lot of other diplomacy like games I've seen.
Fozzy Brrr... (432 D)
26 Jan 12 UTC
Yea, the app is solid. My biggest problem is with the people I play with, having encountered unbreakable alliances to the point that is baffling, but that has to do with people. The app is solid, bit only full press as mentioned. Wish this site had an app similar to chess.com
missileer (147 D(B))

I've been playing for a bit, but it is slow.
Celticfox (100 D(B))
26 Jan 12 UTC
I agree Fozzy. I just don't get some of those alliances at all. And some games go slow and other quicker. I think it depends on how talky people get.

I DLed droidippy, but didnt like how it needed access to my gmail to function, so I never tried it,
fortknox (2059 D)
26 Jan 12 UTC
First of all: the web browser can do a decent job in webdip. Ideal? No, but decent.

Secondly, I've been learning android and intend on trying to make some front end for webdip. Don't hold your breath or ask about it, I'll get to it when I get to it, but I am planning on doing it.

If you are a mobile developer, check out the open source codebase and you'll see communication is done through JSON, so it shouldn't be tough to make a front end to the website.

How's that Dip App coming?
fortknox (2059 D)

Why doesn't that 'silence user' button nor 'mute user' button under abge's name work?!? :P
JECE (1248 D)

To the Droidippy players: In order to play a game with the settings you like, do you have to set up your own game? The main reason I haven't played a game on the app is because joining a random game sounds pretty scary. What if you ended up in a live game! But then when you create your own game, it seems like no one can join it except for people you specifically invite.

Celticfox: No variations? Only one type of press? The options for games you create look rather varied. In fact, it looks like they have more options than on webDiplomacy!

noiseunit: That was a little odd. I read on that sometimes there's and error and Droidippy starts sending you a ton of e-mails. I wonder if that actually happens.
mambo (118 D)

I'm actually in the process of learning Objective C (iPhone language, not Android) for the purpose of making a webDiplomacy app.
Ienpw_III (117 D)
28 Jan 12 UTC
That Droidippy interface really is fantastic.
Fortknox: take note!
Celticfox (100 D(B))
28 Jan 12 UTC
Where are you seeing the variety. I haven't been able to find any. Also when joining a random game they've always been standard press games. I think 1 day for movements. Also, I do have the paid version so I should be able to see the variety.
JECE (1248 D)
28 Jan 12 UTC
Celticfox: I do not have the paid version. Go to Menu --> Play --> Create game

After you commit and say OK, select the game you created. A menu should come up and there are a bunch of options.
Celticfox (100 D(B))
28 Jan 12 UTC
Ok it looks like any custom games are by invite only. So if I create a game and leave it people will be pulled into a random game. But the only way to do something like gunboat is to do an invitational game. And Thanks JECE! Didn't realize there were all those options before. I very much prefer gunboat to press games.
JECE (1248 D)
29 Jan 12 UTC
Celticfox: Maybe we should set up a game here in this forum. I'm very curious about this app and would like to try it out.
Celticfox (100 D(B))
29 Jan 12 UTC
JECE: I would be down for that. So one of us creates a game and then sends out invites to that game via their email address. That's why I think they need access to your email account but I could be wrong. I've never had any problems with a mass amount of email from them, but I could of just gotten lucky.
JECE (1248 D)
30 Jan 12 UTC
Celticfox: No, there was an explanation somewhere, but I don't think it was that. You join with the code that you can see in the options page.

I can create a no press game if everyone is OK with that.
Fozzy Brrr... (432 D)
30 Jan 12 UTC
hopefully in another day or 2 i could join in an invitational droidippy game
JECE (1248 D)
30 Jan 12 UTC
I might as well create the game now. I don't think they expire like in webDip.
JECE (1248 D)
30 Jan 12 UTC
Alright:

Invitation code: [I'll PM you it when you ask me for it.]
Private chat: Off
Conference chat: Off [we could do Anonymous for logistical issues?]
Public email: uncheked
Draws include all survivors: checked [I think I'm reading this correctly]
Allow invalid orders: unchecked
End year: 1936 [can't go any later]
Scoring system: c-diplo [no idea what this is]
deadline: 36h [I hope we can finalize our orders on Droidippy]
Celticfox (100 D(B))

Is it possible to force a draw if the players disappear?
One of the players in my diplomacy game Paris requested a pause so the other players complied. He never did return to unpause. It has been 162 days since he has been online so he has obviously deserted the site. The other players haven't been on in a long time as well. We began to vote for a draw and I was hoping since the other players are gone that the game could be forced into a draw or at least unpaused. I don't know who to contact or how to go about doing this. I need some help. Thank you

A Technical Question
I was wondering if it is still possible for an army to attack another army that is adjacent to it only through the ocean (meaning it would need a convoy to actually be successful) and cancel the support of the army even without the convoy.

Why has gunboat become so popular?
I used to play on this site a lot and, nearly without exception, all the highest pot, highest quality games were full press. High pot gunboats were rare, and full-time gunboaters were regarded with suspicion (at least by me!). Now though nearly all the high buy-in games are gunboat. Why the change?!

So I attended my first face-to-face Diplomacy tournament in Seattle, WA, and I am proud to announce that I got my butt kicked. But that didn't matter really because I had a blast. Was great to meet some of you over there! I wrote a little AAR here: http://www.playdiplomacy.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=105&t=25938
