Seriously, what's happened to me.
I'm relatively new to this site, but i had a pretty good record until Sunday. But since Sunday, I've had nothing but defeats, seriously. I've tripled my number of defeats since Sunday, and I don't know why. Is it possible to suddenly just get bad at diplomacy out of nowhere?

Just curious. Has anyone pulled together data on performance by each assigned country? I'm curious to see if assumptions about countries is actually backed up by evidence.

WWDC iOS 4
Anyone else follow it live?

I di not, but I did buy an iPad today so I guess it makes up for it. Haha so what was it about? We're there a lot of new cool features or was it mostly older stuff redone.

Props on the iPad!!! My dad is buying my mom an iPad for her birthday next Friday... I'm excited to try one out.

As for WWDC it was pretty much a recap on iOS4 from the iPad conference (noting that the platform is now iOS4 instead of iPhone OS4 - interestingly enough cisco owns the rights to iOS but Apple is firm in AT&T :( ...) however they did announce mobile iMovie which is very cool.

The top features today were:
o Video calling (ish it's Wi-Fi only for the duration of 2010)
o 720p 30fps video camera
o "Retina display" (aka you want it, it's better)
o Cool new look (same as leaked Gizmodo phone)
o iBooks on the iPhone

I did. Obviously the leak reduced the impact of the iPhone 4 announcement and most of the iOS4 info was a rehash of the April announcement.

As an iPhone 3GS user I am looking forward to iOS4, primarily for the application folders feature and think multi-tasking will be good as long as processor can handle it. iBooks will be nice if I can bring together the various e-books that already live on my iPhone.

iPhone4 looks nice, I think the video chat feature will be good, especially if they can find a way to integrate it with iChat. iMovie seems like a crazy idea, I cannot imagine that you can get fine enough control through pointing with your finger on a small screen; wait until you get back to a large screen and a mouse! I am disappointed that my big hope - handwriting recognition like old Palms had - is not there.

Other disappointments:
- no refresh of the iMac range as I am waiting to order one to replace my Mac Mini
- the "magic trackpad" Engadget showed yesterday has not appeared, but I guess it will very soon
- the iTunes store needs a real overhaul: search is poor, especially in TV & Movies section, and finding stuff is getting harder; however, I expect that something will be done in "iTunes X", which will include streaming, and be announced with new iPods in September.

Oh, almost forgot: iPad. My neighbour has one for testing at work so I had a quick play the other day ... very nice. The bevel makes it seem much bigger than I expected, not just 2x iPhone, but you would get over that. Good screen, even outside. Fast response rate.

I plan to get one just as soon as they fit a front facing camera. I expect it to live on lounge table and be my wife's main connection to the internet (dragging upstairs to spare room, waiting for computer to boot, etc. means that she rarely checks email).

Yeah I ended up going to apple.com and watched their little snippet video and the video calls as well as the video recording seemed cool. It also clears up why they didn't initially give the iPad a frontffacing camera; they were saving it for iPhone 4. My guess though is that with he second gen iPad they'll add the camera. I have to say so far from using the iPad around the house though it's been really cool. Ive barely had to go to my computer for anything and Was bake to sit in bed reading crime and punishment (which I bought for a dollar). We will see how I feel about it in a week or two though but my initial impressions are very good.

Does anyone know if Jobs' mention about the two supported platforms; App Store and HTML5, means that HTML5 web-apps might be treated as legit apps, with a market like Chrome is trying to do? Or is it just some more anti-Flash posturing?
diplomat61 (223 D)
08 Jun 10 UTC
@jman: I do not see what they gained from leaving the front camera for iPhone4. I reckon either a) they simply couldn't get it working in time/without iOS4 or b) they want it in iPad 2G next year to tempt owners of iPad 1G into re-buying.

@Kestas - I'm under the impression that jobs is just locking out competition.

A number of developers have come out and said they're giving up on iPhone - Apple are too restrictive and Andriod is the way to go.

@fig; Yeah I agree to be honest. :-( It just seems like such a shame that HTML5 is really shaping up to be a very capable platform, despite the drawbacks, but that the decentralized, chaotic environment means there's little incentive to take it to the next level
diplomat61 (223 D)

@kestas: I think he is posturing to counter any backlash from Apple's anti-Flash stance which is just starting to get public attention. It sounds like they are being open but everything else suggests they'll keep very tight control.

@Figs: given the quantity of rubbish apps in the iStore having some developers bugger off would be a good thing. I know Android is doing well but the volume of customers on iDevices is a big chunk of any market. My expectation is that apps work with other devices will be a key sector, if you have a strong product on Mac (perhaps the world's greatest shopping list creator) it would be hard to decide to only develop a version for Android and not iOS.

@Kestas - To be honest I'm more waiting on CSS3 to be fully rolled out. However I agree, HTML5 and whatever it's XHTML partner will be (2 I guess?) will be a massive step forward.
Also the browser war is back on, which is now actually brilliant news for developers as each is trying to outdo the other in standards compliance.

@diplomat, I think that the idea of getting people to rebut the second gen iPad was probably a strong influence. Does anyone have any idea od when the second gen iPad incoming out?
diplomat61 (223 D)
08 Jun 10 UTC
My guess is about the same time next year. I think they will want to settle into a pattern of major launches quarterly or so. At the moment they usually release iPods around September for the holiday season and iPhones after WWDC, which leaves a window around Feb-Apr. None of the computer lines has the same big buzz/sales spike so they can dribble updates out any time.
