Finally a topic that matters...
I like to repeat myself when I say "my bad". As if it somehow reinforces the fact that I'm sorry for something. Stupid? I'll open it up for discussion.
figlesquidge (2131 D)
04 Jun 10 UTC
Well, it is a little stupid yes - why not say "sorry" if you really are. 'my bad' is a good one for defusing a situation, but surely if you feel serious enough you could use proper English?
patizcool (100 D)

I just wasted 10 seconds of my life reading your post... your bad... your bad
Stukus (2126 D)
04 Jun 10 UTC
I have to say I'd like to decrease the use of "my bad" as much as possible.

If you're sorry, show it by future actions, not with two syllables that (I would guess) most people don't even take as a sincere apology.
I'd like to get rid of the expression at work 'at the end of the day' and go back to using the word 'Ultimately', or something similar.

"in consideration of a recent epiphany, I have come to the conclusion that the source of our ill communication derives from a misunderstanding of mine. Where originally I had calculated merit in my observations, I now acknowledge the imperfection of my previous claims"
Chrispminis (916 D)

Haha nice one COTW.

I find myself saying "Yeah, no, yeah, no, but yeah" sort of things a lot. It's funny because I know exactly which one I mean from the start (I think). Is this indicative of some sort of internal subconscious debate? I don't really feel uncertain or hesitant when I say it, it just sort of comes out.
Amon Savag (929 D)

I second the Dingle's proposal to use the world "Ultimately" rather than "at the end of the day".

Since it's seconded, we may now take a vote.

Yay.

My bad - meaning, "Shit, I didn't mean to get caught doing this thing that was offensive to you, because I really was certain of the positive outcome for me, regardless of how it affected you. I really didn't think you were swift enough to catch it. I'm not really sorry...actually quite surprised because I didn't think you had a big enough pair to call me out. Damn. My bad. I'll try harder to screw you a little more discreetly next time..."
krellin (80 DX)
04 Jun 10 UTC
At the end of the day, I'm pretty sure that's what "my bad" means. Oh...whoops...I used the phrase itself in part of my description of the phrase. Damn. My bad...
Draugnar (0 DX)

The problem with Ultimately is it can easily be mistyped Untimely. And that can lead to some confusion.

I also wish I could stop saying "Dude", though for some reason, I find it cute when girls use the word.
figlesquidge (2131 D)
04 Jun 10 UTC
Really? 'Dude' is one of those words that never sounds cute to me :S
I hear it as a friendly guy-guy sorta thing
Draugnar (0 DX)

The code monkeys I hang with use dude for guys and dudette for the couple lady devs.

No such thing - that's an illusion mate. You need to increase the main fan speed.

UK women think it is too geeky. US women understand there is plenty of money to be made.
Chrispminis (916 D)
05 Jun 10 UTC
Yeah, figle, I don't really know if I can justify it. I think it has something to do with the shape their lips make when they say it. I don't know, it's just cute.

Also Draug's right, in general I think computer science is much more mainstream in North America than in the UK. More firms, bigger firms. It's still seen as somewhat geeky, but I think that'll be over in a couple of decades. Intro to Computing is one of the largest classes at McGill, and even in high school the computer science class was huge. Programming proficiency is the new literacy.
figlesquidge (2131 D)
05 Jun 10 UTC
Well, semi proficiency here.
I remember being really annoyed in my 6th form by all the people coming up to me saying "I can program" "Oh right?" "Yeh, I did computing last year and now I can write VB".
Firstly, no you can't, you can copy down what someone tells you, and change an almost identical example that is just different enough your school doesn't get disqualified for giving you the answer. Secondly, even if you had written that yourself, its not a decent VB program and you can't use any of the rest of VB. Or anything else.
Now I know I'm not a good programmer (or a programmer at all by most definitions) but ... oh just ARGH!

Haha in what ways? That wouldn't be terribly surprising given that I've spent like 12 years of my life in Ontario, and if I recall correctly, that's where you live or go to school?

Does anyone listen to classical music?
This may be the shortest lived thread ever, but I was wondering how many people listen to classical music. I'm curious to see if anyone here shares more interests with me than just diplomacy.

This Week On "Philosophy Weekly": Epicurus' Riddle
I came to this line of thought and asked a whole bunch of people for their answers and felt totally original... then I realized Epicurus beat me to this dilemma by over 2,000 years. ;) Great mind, Epicurus, and a great riddle: Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent.
Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent. Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil? Is he neither able nor willing? Then why call him God? -Epicurus

When does a diplomacy game end?
If a country is able to reach 18 SCs during the Autumn diplomacy stage, but then could lose 1 or more SCs during the Autumn retreats phase, is the game supposed to immediately end and ignore the retreat phase?

Where's Dunecat and his high pot WTA anonymous game?
There was talk of a 1,700 point buy-in. I'd like to put in at least 1,000. Any interest? Feedback on the buy-in? I'd like to start within a week, anyone interested?

Does anyone else find being able to buy into a CD country...
...to be the single most obnoxious thing to happen to a Diplomacy game? Case in point, I was Russia in a live gunboat game. England missed the start time and went CD. I'm in the middle of a war with Germany over Scandinavia when someone else takes England, convoys into Norway, and helps Germany. Austria and Turkey see what's going on and ally against me, leading to my quick demise.

Why should we Diplomacy players have to fear idle countries randomly waking up and attacking?
