Week 2 of the RBI Baseball Season, searching for the Greatst Team Ever, is over.
The standings:
AL:
z-1. 2004 Red Seox (2-0)
2. 1927 Yankees (1-0) (Tiebreaker over Twins, beat them Week 2)
3. 1991 Twins (1-1)
4. 1911 Athletics (0-2)
z= clinched homefield advantage in the ALCS
To the NL:
1. 1975 Reds (2-0)
3. 1986 Mets (1-1) (Tiebreaker over Dodgers, beat them in Week 1)
3. 1936 Cardinals (1-1) (Tiebreaker over Giants, beat them in Week 2)
5. 1954 Giants (1-1)
5. 1965 Dodgers (1-1)
6. 1908 Cubs (0-2)
So, the playoff situations...
In the American League:
-The 2004 Red Sox are the only team with a clinched spot, and they have homefield advantage in the ALCS
-The Yankees road to the postseason is the easier between them and the '91 Twins, as they hold the tiebreaker: a win by the Yankees and/or a loss by the Twins, and the 1927 Yankees make the ALCS
-The Twins need to beat the 2004 Red Sox (2-0) AND for the Yankees to lose to the 1911 Athletics (0-2.)
In the National League:
-The 1975 Reds (2-0) are in the best shape to make the playoffs, automatically making it if they beat the 1965 Dodgers, and cannot be knocked out by a loss, the worst that can happen is they lose the game and havea one-game playoff for the remaining playoff spot (if need be)
-Both the Dodgers and Giants wins came at the expense of the Cubs, and so hold no tiebreakers: each MUST win to make the playoffs AND hope for a loss from the '75 Reds, 1986 Mets, and/or the 1936 Cardinals
-The Mets and Cardinals both hold tiebreakers
-In the event the Reds win their game, they'd go 3-0 and clinch homefield advantage
-In the event the Reds, Mets, and Cardinals all win (so a 3-0 team AND the two teams with tiebreakers) the Mets and Cardinals, at 2-1, would meet for a one game playoff (home team determined by coin flip)
-A Reds loss to the Dodgers coupled with a Cardinals loss to the Cubs would catapult the Dodgers over the Cardinals in the playoff position hunt
-A Mets loss to the Giants would automatically have those two switch places in the playoff position hunt
-And, of course... only the Cubs, at 0-2, can NOT make the playoffs in ANY scenario
Pretty accurate ;) (Sorry Cubs fans... I'm a Mets fan, I understand the pain... well, to a degree, my team didn't EXIST when Theodore Roosevelt was President- but we HAVE won the Series since then.) ;)
