In this game i've been subjected to a whole load of crap from Russia (BESM) over the in game country to country, and now in the global chat. I also have a suspicion that there may be an undisclosed connection between BESM and WarMaster7 who is playing Italy.

Honourable Dealings?
Just out of curiousity, has anyone actually made a deal with someone and had them go through with it to the end? Because I've yet to find someone who hasn't either backstabbed me for a grand total of 6 friggin' points, gone CD, or insisted we go for a draw when a win is possible.

While I understand this is part of the game, I find it odd that - both on this and the FB version - I've yet to find ONE person with a smidge of honour.
Invictus (240 D)

I've done it. It's usually because I waited too long to stab. If I can't win myself, why not help a guy out?
S.P.A.O. (655 D)

I'd like to think that i've remained honorable in as many of my dealings as I possibly could. I've also noticed the pattern that you mention, CD's especailly.
WhiteSammy (132 D)

i do my best to honor my agreements and i find that i often get stabbed anyway

i stick to alliances through thick and thin even if my teammate could be replaced by someone "better" and i rarely if ever stab an ally
Jacob (2466 D)

Maybe you should take the action suggested by your name and realize what game you are playing :P

Seriously though, I have seen many situations where people have acted in a way that you would describe as honorable. I know that I have let one center powers participate in a draw when I could have wiped them out and I will frequently try to keep struggling powers alive.

As for alliances, it is nearly always best to try to keep them intact if you can because you will more than likely play in a game with them again.

Now, having said that, when you get stabbed or when you stab you just have to realize that it is a part of the game and that people are going to do it. Getting mad about it usually doesn't help. It's much better to try to calmly work something out with them.

I'm obviously fairly alone in sticking to my deals then...

Judging by other's experiences that is, not just what is posted here ;-)

Reality Cheque: you speak of honor and keeping your word etc, yet you hide behind a nickname. It was only the Lone Ranger who had honor and a mask.
((I now return you to your regularly scheduled forum as I drag my dead horse around the keyboard one more time,))
Onar (131 D)

lol, but there are honorable ways of stabbing someone.
figlesquidge (2131 D)
22 Jan 09 UTC
Lots of us stick to our deals, but the game doesn't say you have to.
Oh, and Edi yes some of us use nicknames, but that doesn't mean we don't have honour
Friendly Sword (636 D)

I'm like Batman.

My mask is representive of some of some of my features and really just intensifies my honourable tendencies.
Centurian (3257 D)

Don't listen to them. They are just saying they stick to deals to lull their allies into a false sense of security.

But some people are pretty adament about keeping deals. Much to my frustration, I was slowly eliminated by a team where one of the allies had 17 centres. He waited until I was completely eliminated so he could draw with his ally according to their agreement.
Darwyn (1601 D)

Edi, I think nicknames on the internet are just a sign of the times. When the internet first took off, everyone used nicknames because they were apprehensive about putting up their real names and info for everyone to see. It was quite the new experience to have anyone in the world find you if they wanted to. How can you blame someone for wanting to hide their identity? I don't get that.

Things are changing and people are getting more comfortable with this sort of thing, but it's not going to happen overnight and there will still be people "hiding" behind a nickname. I don't see this as being dishonorable at all...and I agree with figlesquidge.

So I think your comment was a bit of a non sequitur
Onar (131 D)
22 Jan 09 UTC
To be honest, I identify more with my nickname than my real one. I spend more time on the internet than in the real world.

i was in a team game, e,f,r,i against a,t,g my team e,f,r eliminated austria and germany and instead of just giving up turkey kept fighting becuase of this philcore who i believe was england suggested instead of taking him out and a 3 way draw we draw it 4 way to say thankyou to turkey for keeping on fighting, i would have said this was pretty honourable
Onar (131 D)
22 Jan 09 UTC
That's a lovely way of doing things, although it can be kind of boring, too.
Darwyn: I'm pretty sure Edi was joking.

Stabbing for the sake of things is stupid, but it's only a game and it's much more enjoyable when it's a free-for-all.

I never make deals to go for a 17-all draw as I think it destabilises the game. It's more fun to ally with someone for the sake of gaining an advantage in the short term, then either being stabbed and accepting it, or stabbing them yourself to go for the win

I had an awesome alliance, where we were both so paranoid about eachother stabbing one another, we stabbed each other and didn't gain or lose anything. But I won regardless 19-13-1-2

nitish (2087 D(S))

RealityCheque, we played together recently, and you, Italy, and I stuck together until the end; we finally drew only when both sides had a stalemate line. I definitely appreciated the way you and Italy played that game.

Or did you mean you wanted a game where someone stuck to a deal even when it would have been better for them not to?
urallLESBlANS (0 DX)
22 Jan 09 UTC
Ya I was very proud of that, and you go off saying we're not honorable now. Lol jk. I was so paranoid you would betray us since you had no way to attack Germany, that I was willing to give up Trieste. Germany on the other hand was very "dishonorable." Betrayed me twice, or as he said, three times.
PirateJack (400 D)
22 Jan 09 UTC
Admittedly I have made some somewhat reckless decisions in my past games (when I didn't understand how draws actually worked, points wise >_>), but nowadays I like to keep my alliances going as long as possible.

Generally, if you stick with someone through thick and thin they'll remember you as a good ally in another game and will be more willing to help you out if you fall into trouble as well.

If I feel I have to, for some reason or other, stab an ally, I really prefer formally declaring war first.

I've done it a few times. I like to mix it up because I like to think that I'm not easy to predict. I'm sure some of the better players have my number though. =)

I was just having fun...
honor is a flexible thing in Diplomacy as it is in diplomacy in reality. It all depends on who defines the conceptual background.
Pandarsenic (1485 D)

I tend to hold to my word unless you hand me your centers, in which case I will accept your gift graciously.

Anyone up for a quick game? 1 hour deadlines.
If so, let me know here and I'll put up a password so we don't get random joins. We can pause the game if someone needs to go, but our goal would be to be finished by the end of the night.

Video/Live Feed/Audio Game: Next wave?
With the advance of the Net Techs, would it be reasonable to expect a new Diplomacy site where the games are played in Real Time but with Video-Audio feed rather than Text base which would be used for only showing the moves/adjudication:? How complex is this to set up?

Map colouring
Please take a look at this map: http://phpdiplomacy.net/mapstore/751/7517/12-largemap.png?nocache=aca113
Shouldn't the colouring algorithm colour Finland Pink? I know though that Britain hasn't put their foot on it, but it would be more logical for a non-SC province to take the same colour as its surrounding provinces, if they too all have the same colour :) Just a suggestion!
