Taking over a country in Civil Disorder
When you take over a country, anyone have any pointers? I suppose the first thought is to look at the board and see if there's any chance of surviving, but beyond that, any advice?

When you take over a country, can you real all the diplomacy that went on before with the prior player?

Which are the records by country?
Is there a compiled list of which country wins most often? Which loses most often, which survives, etc? Seems like easy information to pull from a database.

How did I manage to drop out the game???
I was in the game 'duality' as England and suddenly I was out of the game ...how could this happen? I certainly did not miss three phases (I don't know if I even missed one?). Is this some kind of bug?

Now I find that someone has claimed my place in the game already. Would there be any chance to get back into game??

suggestion to make retreat phase quicker
I am currently in a game that is waiting on one more country to retreat. However, the retreating unit has no options and must be destroyed. Is it possible for the program to recognize that fact and just inform the player the unit is being destroyed? Instead, our game is being delayed hours. I know other games have dealt with this situation also. Maybe this could be added to the next version of the game.

should the united states get a name?
sorry, but i feel quite insulted that people refers to the united states as "america" when "america" consists of many nations from argentina to canada... and is more shameful when the US has become such a corrupted and criminal nation in an international level.

i think is time that the US gets a real name for their country... how about if they change it to something short for "police squad of the world"? no,i dont think so...then the world will feel insulted.

but really, get a name!

I don't see the problem with the name "United States of America." Is there some confusion with some other United States of America? I could understand people from the United States of Mexico (actual name) having an issue.

Or is it because so many people from other countries in this hemisphere refer to themselves as "Americans"? Let's see, that would include people from... um... uh...

On the other hand, the USA could use a better national anthem. "The Star-Spangled Banner" is just so darned hard to sing well.

america is the continent and mexico is a country that is compose of different states... see?

no, the united-statians (estadounidenses - in spanish itfits very well) has proclaim themselves "americans" and the rest of the world follows.

either way is incorrect and the US doesnt have a proper name.

We were calling ourselves Americans before there was anyone else around to dispute the claim (aside from the indigenous peoples of course, but that's a whole different topic.) It would make just as much sense to start insisting the continents of North and South America be renamed to reduce the confusion.
Salmaneser (6160 D)

Rename the continent to Cristobalia. It's not fair that Columbus only gets a country, while Vespucci gets the whole continent.

u can call yourselves what u want but that doesnt make it correct.

my theory is that the US was of the idea that they will possessed all the countries from canada and all the way down to central america when they started their "manifest destiny" crap... and they saw themselves (and still does) as the truely americans.

@Sicarius: Why not? Nearly everything is named after someone... And whether he was first or not, he still brought back the knowledge to mainland Europe that this place existed and indirectly kicked off the immigration to the west. While it's debatable whether this was a good thing, it's what happened, and naming it after the person who brought us this knowledge certainly doesn't seem offbase.

The USA has a great name. You know who needs a new name? Every country in Europe. I mean, come on, "France"? "Germany"? It's not like Germany is the ONLY place with German people. I don't see how anyone with a conscience could disagree with me, and this goes for all the European countries.
GuanShao (537 D)

Pitirre; they aren't called the United States of America for no reason.

You realize that every state has their own government? Technically, every state in the United States of America is its own free-reigning government body. However, they bandied together and became a Union of states, with equal or semi-equal power, who elect a reigning ruler for a certain amount of time.

Naming it anything different would betray the fact that we are what we are; the United States of America. The only possible change would be The United States of North America, and that isn't happening.

You sir, pitirre, are an idiot.

guanshao, see... u even notice that it is more correct to call the US of "North America"... but as you so arrogantly say "is not going to happen" even so is more correct (and still it is not).

look at spain, spain surely has within their goverment different cultures and many of those "states" has their own language and culture (not like the US that they just expanded but ALL are the same) and following your "great" analysys spain should call themself the "europeans" just because they happened to be in europe and because they have different "states" within their goverment.

now, that is SURELY stupid!

from now lets call the spanish, the europeans, everytime we mean the spanish.

How about this: disregard names because they're absolutely meaningless. It's not like the Patriot Act has anything to do with patriotism. It's not like the Digital Millennium Copyright Act has anything to do with appropriate copyright law for the so-called "Digital Millennium". It's not like the European Union actually *unifies* European states into anything meaningful.
GuanShao (537 D)
11 Apr 08 UTC
No, ednos, because the United States of America means something. Its a group of Nation states that came together to shirk off the oppression of a an imperialistic England during the time. If Canada decided that they no longer wanted to recognize the Queen of England as their queen, and wanted to join the USA, they would indeed still be called the USA. They would not change the name to The USAC, "The United States of American and Canada", because its just that; united states, that have come together, to form a large part of North America.

The Spain argument; They wouldn't call themselves Europe. They could call themselves The United States of the Iberian Peninsula, or something of the sort, but your argument makes less sense than your argument against 'American Oppression in Puerto Rico'.
dangermouse (5551 D)
11 Apr 08 UTC
Why stop at America?

Great Britian obviously needs a name change. They may once have been great, but recently? Where is the empirical evidence for this so called greatness?

Easter Island? This tiny little landmass certainly can't lay claim to the most important religious holiday to 1/4 of the world's population.

What about places like Democratic Republic of the Congo? Should they really be allowed to use the word "Democratic" in their name? They're certainly not really one of the more democratic places in the world.

And Myanmar aka Burma? The Burmese were just the most powerful of tribes in the area and so they went and named the whole country after themselves.

The vast majority of countries are named after the group/culture of people living in them now. How is it any better for all of those old world nations to call themselves Bulgaria, Thailand, Hungary etc? All of those lands were once populated by other peoples who were overrun when the Bulgars, Thais, Huns etc invaded and settled down. Should it matter that it happened 1000 years ago instead of a few hundred? If you need another example, look at the thread from a last week about Greek and Macedonia.

Americans are aware of the borders to their north and south. It's not as though they're laying claim to two entire continents in their hearts every time they refer to themselves as "American" or shorten United States of America to simply "America" in a sentence.

hahaha... the united states of the iberian peninsula! hahah...
why cant you be so specific with the US?

read about how your US goverment had planned that the island of puerto rico was an ideal island/military base and from all the early 20th century the puerto ricans lived in hunger they never experience before with the idea to get out from puerto rico the puerto ricans... all this cuased by the US goverment.

SmithWesson (100 D)

I bet the Portugese would be mad about that name.

Your last sentence doesn't even make sense pitirre.

We (the USA) should have picked up Cuba rather than Puerto Rico when we had the chance.

McCain (100 D)

The name Spain in fact implies that Spain owns the entire Iberian peninsula, or at least it did. Hispania was the name for all the land south of the Pyrenees.
GuanShao (537 D)
11 Apr 08 UTC
Sorry, my mind slipped about Portugal, but they could still lay claim to that name, as they are a united group of nation states under one leader.

Pitirre, I really wish you had another argument that wasn't about your Communist view on American Diplomacy in Puerto Rico. its frankly sad that you have no other evidence besides some flimsy bit of conspiracy theory.
United $tates of America?
GuanShao (537 D)
11 Apr 08 UTC
Yes, we get the Dollar sign because our dollars is worth less than the canadian one?
ednos (529 D(S))
12 Apr 08 UTC
GuanShao, we named it to have significance, sure, and the name is indeed true--we are some states united in America. The name itself, though, isn't something so meaningful that someone should fight over it or even bother debating its accuracy. As people have already stated, that America is in the name does not mean our government claims both continents as its own.

since this game is based off of world war 1
I thought it would be insightful to look at the war itself, or rather it's causes

now something I find very funny that a nationalist started the whole war, with the assassination. And even then it only started because nationalism was so strong in many European countries.

So what do you think about nationalism?

Let's see if we can come up with a list of players with especially good names. After we get a decent list together we can vote. Let's try by saying each player may nominate up to three other names that they think are especially creative, funny, etc.

I'll start with (in no particular order):
1) Feckless Clod
2) Figlesquidge
3) Kestas ;)

6 point game, come beat up on me. For the second time now I have been put down to almost 0 points, and phpDip has kindly renewed me back to 100 points. It must be a benevolent universe! Account
Allo all, just getting this known ASAP - this is a second account, my first is Shisuren. The only reason for this account is because I can't seem to log in with the other name while at work - so this is my 'play on lunchbreak' account (probably). Not even sure I'll have enough time, but if I do, I'd like to play a little bit. Neither account will be in any game with the other, period.. Ever. Etc.

Again, this account's only here because I can't log into the other one. Don't know whether I'll be able to play often, but I'll at least be able to keep up with one game and just play from home (Shisuren will be inactive if I've got an active game going in this account).

Thanks =)
