Diplomacy Idol
A couple of spaces left in this game, it is intended as an opportunity for non-regulars to show me their credentials as serious players, but regulars are welcome also - so I am trying to get it filled before it starts!

The password is given in the "reliable players" thread.

newb question: End of phase: due now
We're currently playing Autumn 1901, Diplomacy, and the end of phase says due now. Now that everyone has finalized their moves. When are they suppose to be resolved? Can someone post a game play timeline for us newbies to both the game and the site?

All I know is that there are 24 hours for diplomacy. How long do we have to write orders, resolve orders, retreat/disband, and adjust units?

Support a Support
Lets say Unit A is supporting an attack by Unit Q or support-holding Unit Q. Can another unit, Unit B support hold Unit A, so that if Unit A gets attacked by two enemy units, Unit A will not retreat?

What if Unit A was attacking somewhere, but got bounced back. Can unit B still support it?

please put me into CD
i was busy/away from the computer for three days and i went into CD (i think) but no one took it. then i logged back on to post something on the forum and i had a message in that game, and i clicked on it and came out of CD (this has happened to me before). anyway, i'm going to be busy, so if i'm still in any games please put me into CD. i'm going to start playing games again when we have the option for longer deadlines, but i'm still going to log in every few days to talk on the forum. thanks.

Specifying a coast
I'm trying to move from the Mid Atlantic to Spain, however, I can't specify which coast. I want to be on the south, not the north, and this makes afairly significant difference.

Is there any way I can order it to go to a specific coast?

Passworded games
Nearly all the joinable games are passworded, most of them have several civil disorders.

I think the point of passwording a game is to ensure only selected players start the game, not to give players an advantage by preventing anyone taking over for players who lame out. It's not in their interest to recruit a replacement player once the game has begun.

I propose that ALL passworded games become open games the moment they start.

cheating
Why do jahasofat and experienced(a BAD name for a child) play CONSTANTLY in an alliance?
This site sucks!
at least at DIPBOUNCED they can block people playing from one IP address.
I was accused for sharing my computer so i think well, if i can be accused for playing in a game when i was learning with a mate, then well.... whats good for the goose is good for the morons on ere,....
WHEN is this to be fixed or is this going to be a 2nd rate site forever?
braddles31 (100 D)
16 Aug 07 UTC
Sorry make that "backstab" and jahasofat.... whatever that means... these 2 have played together and ALWAYS ally...
dangermouse (5551 D)
16 Aug 07 UTC
I don't know that 2 (possibly 3) games out of 4 is the same as "CONSTANTLY". The game you're in them with now Braddles is the only time you've ever played either of them and it's only in the 1st year of the game.

If you think there's something fishy going on send an email to kestas and ask him to check it out.

IronDiplomat (100 D)

i agree with dangermouse braddles. they ARE italy and germany...classic allies.... what were you expecting? full out war on the first turn? this IS after a game called diplomacy. not warcraft.
PolishTeaParty (389 D)
16 Aug 07 UTC
I was in a game with Jahasofat in which they had a premade alliance with somebody they knew. I forget who the other person was. Jahasofat even told me.
PolishTeaParty (389 D)
16 Aug 07 UTC
I just checked. The other person was ChineseCommy. Jahasofat told me they were friends working together. If you will look you will notice every single game ChineseCommy has played has had Jahasofat in it.
PolishTeaParty (389 D)
16 Aug 07 UTC
Nevermind I must've clicked on Backstab. Baah I must look like an idiot. But I was still told by Jahosafat that ChineseCommy was his friend and that they working together.

I've never known someone be such a screaming hypocrit!!!

Who are you today Braddles31? Bradler, Gisset75, Baradler, Noonan - just to name a few? You really shouldn't throw stones if you own a glass house.

I've played with Experienced alone (without jahasofat) and he's always seemed like a legitimate player - although I'll openly admit I haven't looked into his playing history or his games played with the same people.

You however are the worst case of multi-accounting I have come across on this site, so why not follow a touch of your own advice and stop cheating yourself?
Jahosafat (100 D)
16 Aug 07 UTC
LOL gisset75's email is [email protected] .... braddles you fucking hypocrite. oh snap! its you with two accounts in the game. well whadya kno.
Jahosafat (100 D)
16 Aug 07 UTC
its actually without a doubt that you're cheating braddles. [email protected] - braddles
[email protected] - gisset 75
.... if you're gonna cheat at least be smart about it. god.
isbian (106 D)
16 Aug 07 UTC
Cheaters naming cheaters while saying the site sucks. I mean, seriously braddles31, you say this site sucks, while you have playing on it since March, are cheating on it with multiple accouts, and at the same time complaining about people in inseparable alliances and that the site doesn't have IP checks. No offense, but this is kinda funny actually.
Willigogs (603 D)
16 Aug 07 UTC
For the record - he also plays as:

Bradster - [email protected]
Noonan - although I think Kestas has now cancelled this account

and I THINK a user called "Baradler" too.

As useful as it is to point out these multi-accounts - unfortunately he's obviously a dedicated cheater, therefore I can only see him creating another number of new accounts now where he doesn't include the email address... :(
Willigogs (603 D)

I've had a great time on this site as well. I don't get why people make duplicate accounts as it ruins the game play for EVERYONE. I've been lucky to only have been in one game that it was obvious that one person (claimed his brother) was playing two countries. I'm in a game with Gisset75 and two players dropped to CD after doing some very nice things for him, but I think he's got a problem now that both countries have new management. Of course now that I look for new games I check rep of those playing... here is another example of 1 player playing two accounts - willv2011 & cronos101 (check e-mail for cronus). Why why why do people do this?
The Mahatma (1195 D)

I agree it is very frustrating. I joined the open game "Freedom?" after looking into the other players' history and finding no red flags. My impression was that Gissett was an established/solid player. As it turned out, he is a solid player, but he is also a cheater.

That game taught me the lesson once again of only playing password protected games. If James or any other honest player wants a game without having to put up with that bs or without being at risk of that bs, I suggest you recruit players on the Forum. I would be happy to verify based on my own knowledge whether the prospective players are straight-up, and perhaps others would be willing to vouch as well.

I only suggest this because there is a clear reluctance to create an actual list of trustworthy players.
PolishTeaParty (389 D)

I am very skeptical of Backstab and Jahosafat. In this game Italy is clearing using their units to help Austria instead of themselves. http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gid=1511
Willigogs (603 D)
18 Aug 07 UTC
I will from now on only be participating in Password-protected games, as I'm becoming increasingly infuriated at blatant multi-accounting.

I love this game and site (Kestas has done brilliantly), but unless it becomes 1 IP per account, then I'm afraid it will always be open to abuse :(
isbian (106 D)
18 Aug 07 UTC
I'm think this is a bit harsh, but get used to it. There are cheaters, hackers, and scammers in literally every single fun game on the internet. You'll get the same thing anywhere else, but currently we need at least some method of doing something about them.

Looks like braddles31 and Gisset75 are getting along famously in WAR!!!...
kestasjk (95 DMod(P))

braddles and Gisset are the perfect example of why I can't just log IP addresses and ban every pair of accounts that has used the same IP.
I also can't ban based on cooperation, because some people might be friends outside of phpdiplomacy.net or might have developed mutual trust, and there's nothing too damaging about that.

I think the points system, and perhaps something that logs a range of things like cookies, user agents, logon times, IPs, etc, and combines them all to let me know when two accounts are suspiciously similar, would make having more than one account too difficult to be worthwhile.

I expected I'd have a new release out by now, but trust me no-one regrets having no free time over the holidays to work on my own projects more than I do. Hopefully over the longer holidays coming up in 14 weeks I'll be able to get some serious work into phpDip, perhaps with a few small features trickling in before then.

If the alleged multi-accounts make things unbearable you can join only organized password protected games, write some good code that logs various browser details and highlights suspicious stuff, or subscribe to the mailing list here [ http://sourceforge.net/mail/?group_id=125692 ] to be notified when 0.8 is out.

I have taken a number of CD positions lately and playing them out for fun (Usually hurting the leader as much as I can). This is one thing anyone can do to discourage foul play and improve the game for others.

I am only new on this site, but you always feel cheated in diplomacy when two form a strong alliance to win, its just part of the game, and I think people often get bitter and try to find answers.....
anzac (149 D)
21 Aug 07 UTC
Saying that, I'm sure there still is some underhanded shennanigans on here as well. But also I think that if you have had a sucessful alliance with a player in one game, it would be hard to resist and alliance with them again in any future game!!
tiger (100 D)

Really....
All this talk about cheating- i mean get over it.
It was said before- there is always that sort of thing so just let it be unless this site can fix it.
I know of other sites that have no issue and they are FREE sites too, so cost is not an issue or an excuse.
Anyway, when can these threads be stopped. I find the forum more of a tv soapie- in other words a repeat of the same accusations and questions, i mean- really!

@ tiger: All this talk about cheating- i mean get over it.

In case you haven't noticed, we're trying to fix it right now!!! I know I said all that stuff about getting used to cheaters, but that's because some of them will always be able to sneak past security. Right now though, all of them get past security because there literally is no security. So, tiger, if you don't want this site to have some good anti-cheater security, suit yourself.

Re-write rules on retreats?
Would it improve the game to re-write the rules to not allow a retreat into enemy territory? You could argue that a player should protect their front line, but it seems ridiculous that an army can advance by retreating into a supply centre.

Doubt about the rules
Folk,

See the situation:
- there is an army at A
- and another at B
- there is no army at C
And look what follows:
- the army at B try to move to C
- the army at A try to move to B

What happens? Nobody moves? Or B moves to C and A moves to B?

I know somebody must have asked it before, but I couldn't find at the forum (sorry, I think I haven't serched very much! (o: ).

Thanks!

Feature request; ingame messages to be emailed
With move updates being daily, it can be a bit irritating (not to mention stressful on the poor server) to refresh regularly all day in case anyone sends a message to influence moves.

I know people can already make their email public so email correspondance is possible, but I thought it'd be more convenient if we were emailed with any messages, maybe have a setting to disable it if people think it'd be spammy, but I'd find it very useful.
