Untimely Break
Sorry everyones whose games i am affecting but i am going on a camping trip and then a proper holiday shortly afterwards. I am afraid i don't expect to be back until mid-august...

I don't know if it's possible for kestas to set my games to CD but it might help the games i'm in move faster.

I am particularly sorry to all my allies and the enemies that capitulated to bolster my advance. I will look forward to returning!!!

This is crazy
I just started a game - I drew England - in which France, Germany & Italy have all submitted moves without even sending a message to me. Either

a) They are all allied together already in which case I am doomed

b) They are connected via the pyschic hotline and are able to form alliances by the power of their minds

c) They have moved on auto-pilot.

Either way, I find it very odd and very un diplomatic, but its not the first time. More and more I see games which are essentially all against all with almost no communication or alliance forming. In a recent game I was Austria - stabbed in Autumn 1901 by my Italian "ally" because "that's Austria's fate". Fair enough I suppose, but its reflective on a trend of very shallow gaming that I see increasingly.

Question about retreating to the same territory...
A situation like this has occurred in one of my games where two neighbouring territories have both been forced to retreat, and I assume both have the option of retreating to the same place?

For example - imagine Budapest and Trieste both being forced to retreat at the same time. They both would be able to choose Serbia if they wished - and in this scenario how is it decided who retreats there?

Retreat problem
It concerns this game:

http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gid=1222

kestas plays this one too, I sent him an ingame mssg but didn't reply yet.
I had a fleet in Spain, which was kicked. I want to retreat to Portugal, but I can't. There is no army there, and it wasn't contested, so I should be able to retreat there.

This is really random, but does anyone know what territory you have to be in to change Crete's color from orange? AS far as I can tell, it can't be done- Crete is not part of any territory.

Going to summer holiday...
Dear friends and foes, as it's summer, it's becoming increasingly difficult for me to access internet every day (I'm very dependent on my unstable wireless connection at my countryside). Thus I'm not able to keep high quality play & might miss my turns time to time.

I will not join any new games for about two months, but I try to finalize these 4 (hopefully 3 in couple of turns ;) ...) games I'm playing in. So be patient with me & You will see me more often in autumn :)

Thanks for all of You!

site upgraded?
I have been away from this site since Christmas (2006) revising for my exams, i expected, that when i returned the site would have been upgraded - visually it has not been. The user interface is exactly the same, would you mind informing me if the problems this site had when i left have been fixed such as the convoying; does the convoying now work properly?, can you declare an allied victory?, can you control what coast a fleet is created at? and are there any plans for a more orderly forum system?
thank you.

Puppets
Majorek is an established player, but is unfortunately playing two puppets in several games: Sander and Fistro, both created the same day and as of this writing, all three only in games together.

Became obvious in "another open game" http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gid=1244 where Austria utterly abandons home SCs and fails to defend after initial incursion.

Please explaine.
Your fleet at Mid-Atlantic Ocean's move support wasn't accepted by the unit which support was being given to. (it was the Paris unit)
Your army at Paris attempted to attack the army at Brest, but failed.

http://phpdiplomacy.net/map.php?gid=1211

The only thing i can think of is that i made a mistake in my orders, is there a way to check which unit the MAO unit was trying to support?

Coastal bug; already known
Game id= 998
Classic coastal retreat bug; fleet on south coast of Bul forced to retreat by fleet invading from Rumania, retreat options given are those for North Coast; i.e. none.
I know we know about this, I know we've been promised that it'll be fixed for months now.
I also know this leaves me down a unit in a crucial area.
What I would like to know is when it will actually be fixed?
kestasjk (95 DMod(P))
05 Jun 07 UTC
phpDiplomacy has been accumulating fixes and small addons since 0.75 was released, and quite a lot has been fixed or improved since then, but coasts are tied to creating a new foundation for the adjudicator, which will take a large chunk of time.

I'm on holiday starting 3 weeks from now, lasting 5 weeks. Hopefully I'll get all the funds I need quickly so I can work on personal projects, especially since 0.75 is 10x more used than 0.72 was and lots of good ideas and problems have come up that I'd like to solve. I think promised is a bit strong though ;-)

With money looking the way it is there may be a 0.78 release this holiday which fixes coasts and orders, improves the adjudicator, fixes browser incompatibilities, and makes some optimizations, but doesn't have other new features I want to put in 0.8.

Then in the summer holidays (or winter holidays in the northern hemisphere) I'll add some new features like a better UI for entering orders, a better map, an RSS feed, and a better forum.

I was also thinking about adding Google Adwords. I admit I said I wouldn't put ads in, but that was when I had 2 jobs. If they're effective then putting ads in would let me spend less time developing for others and more time developing my own projects, but I'm not sure if people would prefer possibly longer development cycles or ads. I might pilot it over the holidays to see if it works, unless I get a negative response.
EricHerboso (836 D)

There's nothing wrong with putting ads up, so long as they don't detract from the gaming experience, and in the case of adwords, I'm pretty sure it'll be unobtrusive. When you do such good work as this, you deserve to be compensated in some way.

Just don't allow the ads to take up a full column or row, and don't put ads where they are completely unnecessary, like on profile pages or in future rss feeds. That would _really_ turn me off from this site. Maybe restrict ads to the forum and game display pages?

I'm actually quite curious as to whether ads would bother others who play here.
jimshlif (441 D)
06 Jun 07 UTC
Ads wouldn't bother me at all. You deserve the money, and it benefits all of us if you can afford to spend more time on phpdiplomacy. Maybe people who object to ads could pay you for some kind of premium account to bypass them.
Zxylon (0 DX)
09 Jun 07 UTC
This is my favorite website and it can only get better. If money flows into your pocket, everyone has a better time. Put all the adds you want. In fact, I bet a good portion of the people on this site would be willing to donate funds to the cause. You should set up an option for people to give in order to make PHP 1.0 HORAY!

Ads seem like a fairly harmless revenue generator to me and if it helps the site come along then even better!
Chrispminis (916 D)
10 Jun 07 UTC
See? Told you. =P

Nobody minds Adwords, or banners for relevant sites, such as other online gaming sites. Just no pop-ups, or anything animated or with audio.
dangermouse (5551 D)
10 Jun 07 UTC
I'd agree with Chrisp. It's a great site, and there's nothing wrong with kestas profiting (or at least defraying some of the costs). Pop-ups, audio, and/or animated video are rather annoying however, so if you could avoid those I'm happy.
Dant818 (100 D)
10 Jun 07 UTC
I agree with Chrip. No pop-ups,animation, and audios. Anything else is perfectly fine.
isbian (106 D)
10 Jun 07 UTC
Who cares if there are ads? It means more money for Diplomacy, and that will make this site better. If the ads, pop-ups, animation, and audios annoy you, either ignore them, block them, or use mute.
Arthas (1769 D)
10 Jun 07 UTC
isbian, know what you're talking about before you post. People need to CLICK on the ads for the advertising site to gain revenue, and thus pay phpDiplomacy money. If you block them, the revenue will never be gained.
kestasjk (95 DMod(P))
10 Jun 07 UTC
That's the biggest question for me, if no relevant ads match the sites content and no ads get clicked adwords won't generate anything and obviously there'd be no point in keeping them. I can't imagine what relevant ads it'd come up with for this site, so I'm a little skeptical, but we'll see
Chrispminis (916 D)
10 Jun 07 UTC
Actually, I would not cry if there was a little animation, because sometimes it does make an ad more interesting, but nothing big, and absolutely no pop-ups or audio.

I'm sure that if you had banner ads to OTHER online games, people would click them out of curiousity. I've seen them on many other sites, and do not mind them at all.

http://www.mpogd.com/

That is a good example of a site that has relevant advertisements, although they have a lot more than what I would like to see here. But two simple random vertical banner ads on each side of the forum, for other online games, or such, could work out.

kestasjk (95 DMod(P))
10 Jun 07 UTC
I don't think a vertical text adwords block running along the right side, either outside or inside the white page content, would be too intrusive, but image based ads covering every free spot would bother me too much.

It wouldn't be any more than a textual adwords block, and would probably only be on the forum, game and/or gamelisting pages as someone above suggested, and this is only if it turns out to be worth running them anyway.

If ads don't work out it only means development periods won't be as long as they could be, not a big deal, making the site too much uglier definitely wouldn't be worth it.
I don't know whether or not this is possible, but can the code of an individual game be altered to "fix" this bug in a rather ad hoc manner? I was just forced to retreat from Spain in game 1067 (Yahoo), and I was planning to end up in Portugal. But again, I know very little about computer programming!
Chrispminis (916 D)
11 Jun 07 UTC
Well, I didn't mean to use that site of an example of the quantity of advertisements, I meant the content.

and for admiralnelliott, thank you for your relevancy...
I can see where your confusion arises, because you moved into Spain from Portugal, it only follows that you can retreat the same way, right? Unfortunately, coasts are a little strange. I don't exactly know how they work at the moment, myself, but others know better. However, it seems when you moved into Spain, it put you on it's south coast rather than it's north, which I don't believe can be occupied at the moment. A move into Portugal from the south coast of Spain is illegal, thus so is a retreat. Sorry.

Ultimately, kestas will decide whether it requires individual attention, but he cannot be expected to see to every game personally.
Fair enough!
dangermouse (5551 D)
12 Jun 07 UTC
Why is a move into Portugal from the south coast of Spain illegal? I'm pretty confident that it is a completely legal move in fully compliant Diplomacy.

Not that that helps admiralelliott's situation; but once phpDiplomacy's coast issue is corrected such a move will be possible.
The Mahatma (1195 D)
21 Jun 07 UTC
Kestas, a request. When you're upgrading the site during your holiday, can you add an "abandon game" option and also add location to the player profile. Can these things be implemented immediately?
isbian (106 D)
22 Jun 07 UTC
Well the abandon game option has appeared in the forums before, and I think the problem is that people will be tempted to abandon games that aren't going so well, unbalancing it for other people.

Am I right in saying that it is impossible in phpdiplomacy to support any attack made by a convoy? Isn't this a bug that should be fixed?
