Well I just became aware of something that I simply did not know, and there's lots & lots that I still don't know
It had to do with this "medical use" of marijuana in the control of pain. Marijuana can be used instead of opiate based pain relieving medicines.. OK nothing too surprising in that although I wasn't previously aware of this, but it was the advantages of switching to marijuana and not using opiate based medicines that is also new knowledge for me..The advantages are in three ways..to do with 1 tolerance, 2 addiction & 3 overdose risks & overdose consequences
So with tolerance.. Using opiate based medicines.. Tolerance rises quickly with opiates, much more than with marijuana so increasingly powerful opiates are needed, where marijuana doses don't have to be increased by anywhere near the same degree
2 addiction.. Opiates become both physically and psychologically addictive, and withdrawal is far more severe, marijuana, according to the experts quoted is psychologically addictive, but not physically addictive, and the withdrawal is far less severe.
3 overdose risks and consequences... Much easier to overdose on opiates and consequences much more serious than with .marijuana.
The other comment I found interesting was that the person who had switched from opiates to marijuana said that on opiates they were "zombie like" whereas on marijuana they could still "function" and felt much more involved in "daily life".
I used to dislike the problems dealing with young chaps who'd been drinking bourbon getting punchy, aggressive when I was doing nightclub security, whereas our biggest problem with marijuana users..." Wake up, you can't sleep here....Pizza ? Yes just go out the door, turn left and three shops along there's a pizza shop"
Personally I'll stick with a good single malt scotch, but I'm starting to think that "tough on law and order" Politicians who lump marijuana in with things like meta amphetamines etc are just being stupid and maybe the way to go is to decriminalise marijuana and tax it heavily
