Not leaving, but kind of leaving
I have not had a lot of free time this year, and I'm about to have even less. I don't anticipate I'll be spending a lot of time here. Probably I will make like 1 or 2 short comments on a few threads and then disappear. Don't think I'm ignoring you on purpose, it's just because I don't have the time to refresh all the time like I sometimes do. Lol. One Love

Is there a way to do a multi-way conversation?
It's super annoying that it doesn't seem to be possible to broadcast a message to two people, and have conversations involving more than just two people. I guess you can just relay between the three/four of you, but that's super annoying. Is there a workaround?

How is one's position (rank) calcuated?
The FAQ explains how points are won and lost but does not explain how one goes up or down in ranking. Intuitively, the more one wins, the higher one climbs but I would really appreciate a detailed understanding of how one's position is determined. I've seen players of extremely high rank with a relatively low percentage of wins.

So some CDs imo should not be counted in reliability rating. For example if there is only one option like destroying your unit.

The 13th Amendment to the Constitution declared that "Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction." Formally abolishing slavery in the United States, the 13th Amendment was passed by the Congress on January 31, 1865, and ratified by the states on December 6, 1865.

Wait, the courts can convict someone and sentence them to slavery? Empty the prisons and sell the prisoners!

We have our budget fix! Why hasn't this been done yet? All we have to do is take the predominately black population in prisons and put them in fields. Surely the country can see the benefits! Life in prison? Pah. Give them life out of prison!

My mom and dad were both going through their dissertations/defenses at the same time back when I was eight. There was a serious lack of parenting for about six months, so good luck with the rest of the process, and congratulations.

Congrats!

Still confused though.. do you look at the ethical side of chemistry? How does the philosophy blend in?
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
31 May 15 UTC
Steephie, a PhD stands for Doctor of Philosophy. It is the generic Doctorate you get if you aren't getting an MD (Medicine) or JD (Law). It does not directly relate to philosophy. It is archaic terminology.
steephie22 (182 D(S))

Valis2501 (2850 D(G))

@Steephie,

I study biological pattern formation and recognition, and decentralized decision making in bacterial communities. So for example, my main project is to shine different patterns of UV onto a petri dish of E. coli (small polka dots, large polka dots, a mixture of polka dots) and have the entire dish glow a certain color based on which pattern I sent. The trick is that the entire community have to figure out which pattern I sent, even though each individual cell only gets sent "yes I got hit with UV" or "no I didn't get hit with UV"

Valis2501 (2850 D(G))

My labmates bought me some sparkling peach-flavored wine (think Arbor Mist or Barefoot). My wine choices are truly as unpretentious as they get IMHO.

Interesting subject. It could also be interesting to replicate in a computer science-y way, but that's probably not a revolutionary thought.
Valis2501 (2850 D(G))
31 May 15 UTC
part of the interest of my project is that it was proposed as the chemical underlying mechanism for biological pattern formation, and it was proved mathematically and compute orally decades ago but no one's been able to actually prove its the real, biochemical underlying mechanism. Just that it would totally work and be awesome if that really was how biological pattern formation was formed
