Question - I don't understand what I did wrong.
Modern Diplomacy II Map - I'm Spain, I have a fleet Seville, Sea of Gibraltar, and an army in Gibraltar. The UK has a fleet in Morocco and that's it. Our fleets bounced in the South Atlantic Sea, I attempted to convoy my army from Gibraltar to Algeria... but it failed.. So why did it fail if the other player didn't touch my unit in Gibraltar & the Sea of Gibraltar?

anyone up for a game of nomic?
from wikipedia: "nomic is a game in which changing the rules is a move. in that respect it differs from almost every other game. the primary activity of nomic is proposing changes in the rules, debating the wisdom of changing them in that way, voting on the changes, deciding what can and cannot be done afterwards, and doing it. even this core of the game, of course, can be changed."

Lamb
Meat eaters: do you eat lamb?
Jamiet99uk (808 D)
05 Aug 14 UTC
I was very surprised to be told today, by an American friend, that many Americans have never eaten lamb, and that in most parts of the USA lamb is considered quite an unusual or uncommon meat.

Here in the UK lamb is almost as commonly eaten as beef or pork, so this surprised me. I eat lamb chops about once a week, and also like a lamb burger just as much as a hamburger made with beef.

So, American webdippers, those of you who eat meat, that is - have you eaten lamb or mutton?
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
05 Aug 14 UTC
Yes and yes, but it's not common. I don't know why, lamb makes a better steak in my opinion.
2ndWhiteLine (2596 D(B))
05 Aug 14 UTC
I know the UK has a love affair with mutton and lamb. I'd say in the US its not "unusual", per se, just considered more of a luxury food, not unlike filet mignon.
Yes, I've eaten lamb, but it's a rare thing. Two or three times a year I'll have lamb chop of something
jmo1121109 (3812 D)

I have eaten it, never heard of a lamb burger though. It's pretty rare, I think I've had it about 4 or 5 times in total.

It's pretty rare. You can get it, but it's just not common to eat it.
Jamiet99uk (808 D)
05 Aug 14 UTC
@ jmo:

A lamb burger is simply a burger made from minced/ground lamb, rather than minced/ground beef.

We use minced lamb (Americans would call it "ground lamb") quite widely. For example shepherd's pie, a popular UK dish, is generally made with lamb mince.

in the US its seen as a upper-middle class food. I personally used to be upper-middle class so ive had it. Im now lower-middle to poor and will say I havent had lamb in maybe 4 years because of this.
Jamiet99uk (808 D)
05 Aug 14 UTC
@ CB: So, for you, lamb is a lot more expensive than, say, beef?
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
05 Aug 14 UTC
Yeah, in general a good cut of lamb is significantly more expensive than even the best cuts of beef. It's one of our fancy foods.
peterwiggin (15158 D)
05 Aug 14 UTC
It's significantly cheaper at Hispanic/Asian groceries though, because it's so much more common in those cuisines. Well-made, it's better than just about any other kind of meat.
Chaqa (3971 D(B))
05 Aug 14 UTC
Honestly I prefer chicken to beef or lamb or pork or anything.
Jamiet99uk (808 D)

I should explain that I grew up in the Shetland Islands which have more sheep than people, like New Zealand. The sheep in Shetland graze on the hillside, in all weathers, and ate heather as well as grass, which gives the lamb a gamey character and almost purple flesh.
CommanderByron (801 D(S))

I prefer all the garbage cuts you find in the garbage section. its like 1$ for a pound of Pork skins. and you can feed a family on that.
Jamiet99uk (808 D)
05 Aug 14 UTC
What, like pork rinds?
CommanderByron (801 D(S))
05 Aug 14 UTC
no like raw pork skins. a little bit of adobo and sazon and a slow cook in the over or on the grill and youve got yourself crispy pig skin. served with soup its amazing, cheap, and comforting.

I'm an American, and the only times I have eaten lamb as a home-cooked meal in this country were decades ago, with relatives who were extremely old even then. Old people who remembered when the family was wealthy and all spoke like William F. Buckley. It's a nostalgia meal for people who want to be confused with rich east-coasters even after they've run out of money and moved to the midwest. Regular people don't eat lamb in the USA.
semck83 (229 D(B))
05 Aug 14 UTC
Yeah, I'll eat lamb from time to time. It's the traditional food at our family reunions. I don't eat it too often otherwise, but it's super awesome when I do.
peterwiggin (15158 D)

mmm, pork skin, pig ears, tripe, cow (or pig) tongue, lamb, all the good stuff. I don't understand how people can like chicken, especially chicken breast, so much. It's just so dry . . .
I don't think I grew up with (or sought out) a "normal" American food experience . . .
CommanderByron (801 D(S))
05 Aug 14 UTC
peter trust me you are not alone. I love going to the mexican food truck near my house they have a taco with meat mix on it. and its pretty much a stew of tripe, cow tongue, all of that good stuff on a taco. its beautiful.

I love lamb, but it is not sold in any of the grocery stores in my area so far as I know. Even the Indian-owned farmer's market down the block with the halal meat doesn't have it. The only time I can get lamb is when I go to a particular Persian restaurant in the area that does lamb koobideh that's positively worth dying *and killing* for.

I eat Lamb quite often, though I prefer leg steaks to chops. I'm not American, though. I believe Lamb in America is like Goat in Britain - it's very rare to find somewhere I can buy Goat here, but in Greece and other parts of Europe, it's pretty common. Also very tender and delicious, goat.
Putin33 (111 D)

We eat lamb on special occasions. We get it from local Middle Eastern groceries. I just learned that during Ramadan they only sell the whole lamb.

I'm surprised goat is so rare in UK. I was told by a guy from Mogadishu that each Somali family probably eats a goat a week.
Hellenic Riot (1626 D(G))

As far as I know the only large Somali communities are in London. I daresay goat isn't so rare there. I don't know of any Somali communities here in the south-east.

I guess it's not as popular among the Pakistani community?
I eat lamb a few times per month. It is readily available in the foodie haven of San Francisco, and most people I know like it.
Hellenic Riot (1626 D(G))

Well, there's a very large Pakistani community where I am and I never see it sold, so I assume not.

When I lived in Maine a farmer friend would give us lamb cheaply. Since moving to Mass, I haven't had i at all except maybe once or twice at restaurants.

Sometimes. Lamb burgers, lamb kabobs, and ground lamb for tacos. It's a nice change.

The Pakistani community here has lamb on the menu. Same with India.

But it can only be found in the larger butcher shops.

I had a ghost pepper during school earlier this year. You haven't had spicy till you've had a ghost pepper.
tendmote (100 D(B))

There's a gimmicky restaurant in New York called "Brick Lane Curry House" or something. They have ghost-pepper based curries that they maintain are the hottest in the world. I finished my meal there back when I had more tolerance for spicy food. I don't need to do it again though.
cardcollector (1270 D)

I've had it, but also sparingly. It is uncommon here, and the gamey flavor isn't everyone's cup of tea. But I like it. :)
