So..."Young Adult" Book Series...Why Must They Suck? (And Do They?)
http://movies.yahoo.com/news/teen-sci-fi-franchise-divergent-debuts-56m-160401665.html 1. Three chapters in, that book is (while better-written than Twilight) so face-palming stupid in its plot, premise and execution, I flung up my hands and gave into reading the (even worse) synopsis. 2. Twilight, The Hunger Games, The Mortal Instruments, now Divergent...why? Why must "YA novels" (and I hate that term, but anyway) suck (THG being the best of that bad lot)...or do they suck? Any defenders?

Could we get the save and ready buttons further apart? Sometimes I have to use my phone to enter orders, and it's irritating how easy it is to accidentally hit ready.

"Russia is weak" says Coward Obama
http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/politics/2014/03/obama-says-russia-is-regional-power-not-americas-top-geopolitical-foe/

Yeah...let's hope that China isn't so weak that they decide to take Taiwan once and for all, since the *weaker still* US leadership will do jack squat nothing to protect their ally...
What a fucking idiot. I hope Putin takes ALL of the Ukraine now! Asshole Obama...

What if Sweden had two coasts in Diplomacy?
Or, alternatively, what if Bulgaria had one coast?
What if we had a rule that navigable land provinces always split their neighbor's coastlines in two? What if we did the opposite and only split them when a full land province interrupted the coastline?
I'm not asking if it's right or wrong to do so (obviously the split coasts are there for realism). I'm asking, what would happen to Diplomacy if we did any of these things?

Shapiro-Stiglitz, involuntary unemployment
Hi guys, I thought the forum could be put to productive use and share with me all it knows about the Shapiro-Stiglitz model, its prediction of involuntary unemployment, and then also (either with respect to the model or in general), what will the effect of a fall of real unemployment benefits be on involuntary unemployment.

Transdniester region of Moldova wants to join Russia as well
Following the annexation of Crimea, some people in the Trans-Dniester region, who broke-away from Moldova in 1992 but haven't received much international recognition since then, are requesting to join Russia. Does anyone else find this hilarious?

A Very Broad Question - Conflict styles
The other night, our prof sent us a bonus mark homework question. It asks which of the 5 conflict management styles suit the topic the best. This doesn't sound very hard but he was Very vague in his post. The question was "apply a conflict management style to social and one to political." which seems broad. Any suggestions or shoves in the right direction?

Way to vague to answer. I just finished a management course that included conflict management and even it gave us more details than that on the final.
steephie22 (182 D(S))

I think you need to choose a social conflict management style and a political management style...

The answer I do not know.
Andrew Wiggin (157 D)
24 Mar 14 UTC
Well glad to see you guys came to the same conclusion. This is a purely conflict management course, you'd think he'd be able to be more specific but I plan on talking to him now. Thanks for help folks.
krellin (80 DX)
24 Mar 14 UTC
Don't you think maybe thge purpose is for you to actually engage your brain, think about the different style, give and answer and support it with your thoughts? He's not asking you to provide the "right" answer, he is asking you to provide *your* answer and support your ideas.

Good lord...not really that difficult. In fact, it seems that way he's asked it (open ended...) makes it easier -- as long as you know what you are talking about.

Here's a hint for you: The *real world* is not multiple choice. Life is an essay question, and if you are not able to make decisions and support them, often based on too little information, then you aren't going to make it very far.
Draugnar (0 DX)
24 Mar 14 UTC
I was thrown by the use of the word "topic". I assumed he would provide the topic then have you write about it from the social and the political approaches (perhaps it is a political bully or a facebook/social media bully).

I think krellin's conflict style would be "competing" - highly assertive, low cooperation.

@2WL -- you'd be surprised - in my business life, I am a consensus builder. I don't force action on my employees, but rather solicit their input on issues and then when I must make a decision, they can not protest, because they have already bought into the solution (insomuch as they determined to participate and provide input to me) - not to mention asking your employees for their input on the job they (presumably) know best means you don't make fucked up decision based upon your personal perceptions, as opposed to the actual rigors of the task.

No one said it was difficult but it was exactly what you and the others said, open ended. The program is very multiple choice based, in fact a huge percentage of the exams are multiple-guess and true/false, it's ridiculous. This assignment came in parts, and the last part was exactly like this but more specific. Answers was not what this thread was looking for, merely suggestions and thoughts.

Don't give up on everyone at first glance, good sir :)

krellin (80 DX)

"

"

Ding ding ding....yeahhhhh....you *might* want to review what was taught in class and answer the question based upon what you know/think. That's what I said already, I think.

So instead of (lamely) trying to insult me (I think) - maybe you should go do your homework and stop asking for answers....oh...er...I mean "suggestions and thoughts"...because, you know...that homework, lecture notes, textbook...THOSE are your suggestions and thoughts and should inform you as to what your teacher is looking for...

Either that or this is just another lame thread by a student, "Oh...lookeee what I'm learning. Aren't a SMRT!?!?"
Andrew Wiggin (157 D)
25 Mar 14 UTC
(+1)
It wasn't an insult and it wasn't intended to sound like one. These assignments are what is intended to be talked about in the next class so there aren't any notes, powerpoints, or textbook (no textbook for this class) materials to draw on. The only information provided was a brief lecture on conflict management theories and a few thoughts on the 5 conflict management styles. The rest had to be researched elsewhere.

I don't see the problem with asking fellow diplomacy enthusiasts what their thoughts are. Drawing from multiple sources, a variety of sources, and opposing sources is a better way to form an opinion, in my opinion. You are very good a twisting words when no foul play was intended. A true virtue.
dirge (768 D(B))

OP, I suggest you pay attention to the lectures and read the assigned reading. You are likely to find your answers there.

Assignments are intended to show your absorption of the curriculum. If your professor/instructor gave you five conflict management styles, you simply need to show your ability to apply the concepts you learned to the question.

In other words, do your fucking home work, and stop bothering us.

What do you think about the Front national?
So, my dear fellow Europeans, and Americans, if you know, I dont know how well the American society is informed about national European politics, yesterday were local elections in France. It seems like the Front national has become the third strongest power after the Conservatives and the Socialists. Here in Germany, the Fn is referred to by the media as national and and right-wing extremist.

In a PPSC game, when it comes down to ,two countries against one, is there any reason to stick it to you ally if you think you can solo. The solo would come at your allies expense. Or, is that just being to much of a dick?
