A Jewish State? Israel? YES. YES IT IS.
http://news.yahoo.com/israeli-demand-sparks-39-jewish-state-39-debate-192744221.html It's a Jewish State. As surely as Ireland's an Irish state and Iran's an Iranian state, Israel is a JEWISH state...THE Jewish state. Make the Palestinians recognize that, and in turn, make the Israelis stop the terrible, TERRIBLE expansion plan into the West Bank. As surely as there must be a Palestine, Israel MUST be THE Jewish state.

The greatest hockey team ever assembled? Hardly.

That would be the team below!

1C: Wayne Gretzky (EDM/LAK...oh, and the STL/NYR years happened, too)
2C: Mario Lemieux (PIT)
3C: Mark Messier (EDM/NYR)
4C: Steve Yzerman (DET)
1W: Gordie Howe (DET)
2W: Maurice Richard (MTL)
3W: Bobby Hull (CHI/WPG)
4W: Teemu Selanne (WPG/ANA...we can forget COL/SJ...25 years of excellence!)
5W: Mike Bossy (NYI...finally, New York's other team gets some love)
6W: Jari Kurri (TOR)
7W: Guy Lafluer (MTL)
8W: Jaromir Jagr (PIT, and then he became a mercenary for a ton of other teams)
1 D: Bobby Orr (BOS)
2 D: Chris Chelios (MTL/CHI/DET, all three deserve mention...7 games ATL? No.)
3 D: Eddie Shore (BOS)
4 D: Ray Borque (BOS...wow, they're deep here! And he won a SC with COL)
5 D: Doug Harvey (MTL)
6 D: Paul Coffey (EDM/PIT and a slew of others)
1G: Patrick Roy (MTL/COL)
2G: Martin Brodeur (NJ)

And since 23 is the max according to a Google search, and we have 3 slots open, the bench for this All-Time Team:

G: Terry Sawchuck (DET and 4 other teams...and yes, he's my #3, but worth it here)
C: Phil Esposito (CHI/BOS/NYR)
C: Brett Hull (STL, won a Cup with DAL, played for a few more)

Beat that.

Finland cares more about bronzes than the USA, who basically gave up after Selanne's goal.
obiwanobiwan, I am pretty sure that team was never assembled. And why are you putting Kurri on the buds? And Why are you degrading Gretzky's later years (still better than anyone else ever except maybe Mario). Where is Marcel Dionne, Peter Statsny, Sakic? Hasek for that matter?

@Lando:

-Why not include Kurri?

-Not degrading Gretzky's later years, more just joking about them

-I already have 3 goalies...who would I bump for Hasek?

-Ditto Dionne, Statsny, Sakic, et al--who ya gonna bump to make room?

Most of the old timers could not play in today's league. This 2014 Team Canada is the best ever team.

Firstly, at the start of the olympics I predicted a Canada gold, Sweden silver and that the US wouldn't medal. All 3 of those predictions where right. My bronze (Russia) prediction was wrong.

Secondly, Obi's list isn't a list of greatest team ever assembled, its a list of greatest players of all time list. The undisputed greatest team ever assembled was the 1976 Montreal Canadians.

I also don't know how Lidstrom, Sakic or Hasek didn't make the cut on Obis team.

I also want to point out that every single winger on Obi's list is a RW, and many wingers have had problems when forced to play on the side they're not comfortable with.

Here is my team:
Coaches:
Head Coach: Bowman
Assistant Coaches: Babcock and Blake

Captain:
Sakic

Alternates:
Lemieux
Lidstrom

I may be bias here as Sakic is my favourite forward of all time, but I thought he was a better leader then Lemieux or Gretzky, even if he didn't put up as many points, I thought he demonstrated better leadership in Colorado then Gretzky did in LA or Lemieux did in Pittsburgh.

Lemieux got an A for being the most decorated international captain on the team.
Lidstrom got an A for being the best captain of the defenseman

Lines
Rather then have 4 all scoring lines, I decided to go with the traditional 2 scoring lines, 1 checking line and a enforcer line. Choosing my 6 scorers was super, super tough.

Lemieux-Sakic-Howe
Hull-Gretzky-Richard
Gainey-Datsyuk-Lafleur
Shanahan-Messier-Shultz

Lidstrom-Orr
Harvey-MacInnis
Robinson-Bourque

Starting Goalie: Hasek
Back up: Brodeur

Scratches:
Yzerman (C), Jagr (RW), Potvin (D), Chelios (D) and Roy (G)

Some notes:
Hasek is the greatest goalie of all time, in Buffalo he carried his team every year and is the only goalie in history to win 2 Hart Memorials. He also should have won the Con Smythe in the 98-99 season, but was robbed by the refs with the famous Brett Hull (No) Goal. I may be a little bias given that he is my favourite player (of any position) of all time, but Hasek was in my opinion the best goalie of all time.

Gainey and Datsyuk are the two best defensive forwards of all time, Gainey paired with Lafleur like he did in Montreal during the 70s and we have a dirty 3rd line that is capable at scoring and unbeatable at defense. This would be my go to line in the last minute of a close game.

Richard being a small, speedy sniper would be a perfect winger for a Gretzky style offense, and therefore I thought it made perfect sense to put them on the same line.

I had trouble deciding between my two scoring lines as to which would be line 1 and which would be line 2. Since Sakic is my captain I put him on line 1, sue me.

While the Moose wasn't an enforcer, he could have filled that role and would also be a PP specialist on this team.

MacInnis is also a PP specialist and was selected cause we lacked guys with powerful slapshot from the point, even though defensively he was worse then Potvin, Chelios Coffey, his offense makes up for that.
obi - no problems with Kurri, he had a great career. I just thought it strange you posted that he played on the leafs, which I don't think he did.

Hey obi-dork. Will you please favour us with a long winded analysis of Team U.S.A 's last two games against Canada and Finland? If you could emphasize the reasons why Team U.S.A. displayed zero competitiveness, or skill for that matter. Why DO they suck?

Thank you.
Except Phil and JVR who were great, as expected.

I don't mind that cancel and pause votes are out in the open, but I'd expect draw votes to be anonymous. That's how it was when I played FtF and on the email judges. Any particular reason why they are not anonymous on this site?

Public Press Gunboat
More akin to real life gunboat where we can chat about anything except the game. Does anyone do this? I prefer gunboat because diplomacy just takes a lot of time that I'd rather spend doing other things in my life. However sometimes it would be nice to have the option of sending a public shout out on some topic.
