The Greatest Musical Act Tournament: Broup A: 1600s-1960
And so we begin The Greatest Musical Act Tournament with Group A...or, as every group will be called here, "The Group of Death" (as the World Cup has taught me that's the only name to give to any group ever.) :p How will the Great Composers fare? Which immortal band or act will bring about the most outrage? Who will Team Vergil pull for THIS time...while Shakespeare sulks in the corner, STILL wondering how he lost...TWICE. :p Here we go!

They did have a hand in inventing electronic Edm music which fir whatever reason is pretty darn popular these days.

Daft Punk. I'm not a big fan, but they've been a constant pop music presence for my entire music listening life. I think I was in the fifth grade when Homework came out and I remember thinking "Around the World" was the coolest thing I'd ever heard. And then "One More Time" was a staple of middle school dances. I don't know a ton of Beethoven's stuff, but most I've heard sounds pretty corny.

Beethoven wins, 10-6. A decent showing from the French electro-duo, but not enough to unseat a giant.
Next up, The Beatles vs Nirvana
Beatles

This is tough because they both meant so much to music history. The Beatles helped (and were viewed as the leaders of) a new movement in music. Twice if you want to count their psychedelic period, but definitely the Brit Invasion of pop. Nirvana, by contrast, caused the death of a movement (hair metal). While not among the first grunge bands, they were probably the most well known. A career cut tragically short by its reluctant star.
Tough call. +1 Beatles for being innovators.

Shame I missed the Beet vs. Daft vote, would have been 11-6.

The Beatles represent music I like with a good degree of skill. Nirvana represents music I find tedious.

I vote The Beatles.

Beatles.

Also, as has been said before - Nirvana had a great deal of influence but were certainly not the best to come out of that scene.

I'll put it this way:

Nirvana helped define a decade, as well as a sub-genre of a genre of music...

The Beatles defined and *transcended* a decade, defined a whole genre of music, and branched out to define other elements of culture today, everything from advertising to the way we view stars to film ("A Hard Days Night" actually got a release from the Criterion Collection...which admittedly would be more impressive if they also hadn't released "Armageddon" as well, but hey, no doubting that, comedic though they are, both "A Hard Days Night" and "Yellow Submarine" are two films that helped define 1960s pop cinema...especially YS, actually, that's STILL some amazingly-impressive and original animation!)

So, yeah.

Beatles.

Beatles all the way...until the next vote, when I'll of course vote Beethoven for champ. :p

Bearing in mind that they didn't voice themselves in YS, of course. Still a fun film though. Are you, um, Bluish? You don't look Bluish.

Need a Substitute Player
One player in a game has gone MIA and the balance is completely thrown off without him playing. If anybody wants to take over England in this game: http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=147466&msgCountryID=0 then please let me know so I can get the admin to swap you in. It is a 7 day phase game with a cheap buy in so there isn't a huge commitment but it would help the game and England is not in a bad spot anyway.

I'm thinking of getting a radio for my car, probably starting off with CB and then maybe upgrading to Ham. I'd imagine there is an overlap between Diplomacy and Ham radio, so I thought I'd see if anyone has any thoughts.

Webdiplomacy Tournament
We have nearly filled all 3 boards with official players. I currently have two players on stand-by incase we can't fill the boards. Hellenic Riot has agreed to join if we get to 20 which is just 2 players away. Surely we have 2 players that would like to donate $10 and join this unprecedented online tournament format!

Eternal stalemate?
OK, we're playing a gunboat right now and there's been a crystal clear stalemate for two whole years, but the 17-center guy won't accept the draw. What to do? We can't play all night.

Welcome Back, NHL Hockey! Who Makes the Playoffs, and Who Hoists the Cup?
The Good Old Hockey Game is back again! :) The (grrr) defending Stanley Cup Champion Kings look amazing...my beloved Anaheim Ducks upgraded, and look to make another run, as the Blackhawks, Blues, Avs and Wild are all on the rise in the Wild Wild West. The Bruins and Canadiens still look great, the Rangers look to rebound, the Pens and Caps look to rebound as well...who makes the playoffs, and come June, which Captain gets to hoist Lord Stanley's Cup? :D

Draw or Cancel?
I thought it might be interesting to get peoples thoughts on 'fairness' in a situation where one or more players fail to fight to the bitter end because - neither a draw or a cancel usually seems fair.

Call Out for Fill-Ins
Alright, while there's still time to sign up, today is the last day, and I get the impression that who we have is going to be "it". This is a call to those in the forum that want to play in the tournament but don't want the buy-in. This is a low-committment committing to only the round which you sign up for. We need 5 players that want to start this round to fill boards. I will take the 5 players with the highest reliability ratings.

NFL Pick 'em Week 6: Who's For Real?
Week 6 has already seen Andrew Luck and the Colts pop the Texans' bubble...it also features a match-up between the surprising Bills and the surprisingly-inconsistent Patriots. The Cowboys roll into Seattle red-hot to take on the Seahawks in their house of pain. The Panthers and Bengals square off to see who's for real and who's in trouble, and the same goes for the Bears/Falcons and Giants/Eagles game. Week 6...Pick 'em!
