The Greatest Musical Act Tournament: Broup A: 1600s-1960
And so we begin The Greatest Musical Act Tournament with Group A...or, as every group will be called here, "The Group of Death" (as the World Cup has taught me that's the only name to give to any group ever.) :p How will the Great Composers fare? Which immortal band or act will bring about the most outrage? Who will Team Vergil pull for THIS time...while Shakespeare sulks in the corner, STILL wondering how he lost...TWICE. :p Here we go!

i wouldn't go so far as to say that mozart wrote good and bad things. i'd say that he wrote mediocre and mediocre works, with a few highlights here and there.

Is this still going? If so, Beethoven.
obiwanobiwan (248 D)

I'd disagree on that point two, kasimax, and say it's flipped--

Just about all of his operas are good to amazing...

His symphonies are mostly good, ranging from his youthful and light ones that are Haydn-esque to his later, more famous pieces which are more complex...

A similar principle applies to how I'd view his piano works...some of the earlier pieces are pretty simple and Beethoven blows them away, but in fairness, Mozart WAS writing those pieces at all of eight or so...

His Requiem is arguably one of the greatest pieces of Catholic music in history, and that's saying something.

I believe it's 7-4 in Beethoven's favor at the moment, so the Salzburg Kid needs a late rally to stay alive here...
Nirvana
obiwanobiwan (248 D)

So Mozart's officially lost?

Ah well...no shame in losing to Beethoven...as long as Bach, Mozart or Beethoven win this thing...

Nirvana as well, then, for that match-up.

Truly the 80's versus the 90's on this one. I listened to a lot of U2 in the 80's. The Joshua Tree is one of the greatest single albums ever put to vinyl. On the other hand, the grunge movement had a profound impact on my life (I started high school in '89, just for a timeframe reference). It influenced the way I looked at the world and informed most of the philosophies I hold today. Truth be told, Nirvana was not my favorite grunge band (not even top 3), but I'll give them the nod here as the representatives of that era, seeing as how Alice in Chains, Screaming Trees, and Soundgarden weren't nominated.
+1 Nirvana

U2 +1

Nirvana wins. Beatles vs. Zeppelin.

Possibly the best two artists remaining (yeah Obi, I said it, what you gon' do?), but I gotta go with the Beatles.
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
07 Oct 14 UTC
I think our Finals are going to be (should be, from the remaining field) Beethoven vs. the Beatles...

The ultimate classical composer vs. the ultimate modern pop group.

So, naturally, gotta vote Beatles.

I think everybody has some band (even a couple) they think might be better than the Beatles. They're not sure, but it seems very possible that the band is really, genuinely better than the Beatles.

For me, Led Zeppelin is one of those bands.

But for virtually everybody, it's the Beatles they're competing against. And that's where they're unique.

Beatles.
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
07 Oct 14 UTC
^+1, I think that's insightful, and pretty true...

It's the same with Shakespeare, Einstein, Sherlock Holmes...

In their respective fields, they're just kind of iconic to the point of standing in for the field/genre itself, they're that much of a titanic figure/character.

Need a Substitute Player
One player in a game has gone MIA and the balance is completely thrown off without him playing. If anybody wants to take over England in this game: http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=147466&msgCountryID=0 then please let me know so I can get the admin to swap you in. It is a 7 day phase game with a cheap buy in so there isn't a huge commitment but it would help the game and England is not in a bad spot anyway.

I'm thinking of getting a radio for my car, probably starting off with CB and then maybe upgrading to Ham. I'd imagine there is an overlap between Diplomacy and Ham radio, so I thought I'd see if anyone has any thoughts.

Webdiplomacy Tournament
We have nearly filled all 3 boards with official players. I currently have two players on stand-by incase we can't fill the boards. Hellenic Riot has agreed to join if we get to 20 which is just 2 players away. Surely we have 2 players that would like to donate $10 and join this unprecedented online tournament format!

Welcome Back, NHL Hockey! Who Makes the Playoffs, and Who Hoists the Cup?
The Good Old Hockey Game is back again! :) The (grrr) defending Stanley Cup Champion Kings look amazing...my beloved Anaheim Ducks upgraded, and look to make another run, as the Blackhawks, Blues, Avs and Wild are all on the rise in the Wild Wild West. The Bruins and Canadiens still look great, the Rangers look to rebound, the Pens and Caps look to rebound as well...who makes the playoffs, and come June, which Captain gets to hoist Lord Stanley's Cup? :D

Draw or Cancel?
I thought it might be interesting to get peoples thoughts on 'fairness' in a situation where one or more players fail to fight to the bitter end because - neither a draw or a cancel usually seems fair.

Call Out for Fill-Ins
Alright, while there's still time to sign up, today is the last day, and I get the impression that who we have is going to be "it". This is a call to those in the forum that want to play in the tournament but don't want the buy-in. This is a low-committment committing to only the round which you sign up for. We need 5 players that want to start this round to fill boards. I will take the 5 players with the highest reliability ratings.

NFL Pick 'em Week 6: Who's For Real?
Week 6 has already seen Andrew Luck and the Colts pop the Texans' bubble...it also features a match-up between the surprising Bills and the surprisingly-inconsistent Patriots. The Cowboys roll into Seattle red-hot to take on the Seahawks in their house of pain. The Panthers and Bengals square off to see who's for real and who's in trouble, and the same goes for the Bears/Falcons and Giants/Eagles game. Week 6...Pick 'em!
