The Greatest Musical Act Tournament: Broup A: 1600s-1960
And so we begin The Greatest Musical Act Tournament with Group A...or, as every group will be called here, "The Group of Death" (as the World Cup has taught me that's the only name to give to any group ever.) :p How will the Great Composers fare? Which immortal band or act will bring about the most outrage? Who will Team Vergil pull for THIS time...while Shakespeare sulks in the corner, STILL wondering how he lost...TWICE. :p Here we go!

+1 Daft Punk
This is an easy vote for me since I nominated them. The hard part is convincing the rest of you. Homework was a landmark album in the house/big beat genre. Probably the best debut album by a techno band ever. They followed that up with the greatest electronic album of all time, Discovery. If you want to know how good that album is, go watch Interstella-5555. More recently, Random Access Memories has shown they can strip down much of their electronic sound and put out an album with great instrumentation and arrangement while radically changing their sound (in this case to funk, soul, and RandB). Even managed to nab a few Grammy's for the effort.
No disrespect to Jack White. He's made an impact in rock, country, and alternative with his various projects. Even managed a Bond theme, wich shows his relevance to the times. He's a well rounded musician and a worthy contender.
In the end it comes down to subjectivity. I like Jack's work. I love Daft Punk. Own copies of every album (even the live ones which are surprisingly good). They're in my top 5 and are always available for play in the car. Hands down, the best electronic act of all time.

+1 Daft Punk, but I'd say Kraftwerk could give any electronic act a run for their money
Biggest reasons I am voting for Jack White are because of how important the White Stripes were to my development as a music fan. When they first came out (and to a lesser degree the Strokes) I started to realize that there was really great music out there. It caused me to start seeking out new and interesting music rather than simply listening to what the radio told me. Since then, I have always had a huge respect for their music, and Jack White and all of his projects.

About 13 years later (this summer) I finally saw Jack White perform live for the first time. He headlined the second night of bonnaroo and played a massive set. It was incredible, the songs were perfect, his band was incredible and his stage presence was incomparable. It stands up as likely the best performance I have ever witnessed.

In my mind, he has solidified himself as the best rock star of our generation. He did it without self-proclaiming it as Kanye had done the night before. Check out his full set on youtube.

I like both quite a lot. Daft Punk has inspired a whole lot of my favorite music acts though (Justice, Mstrkrft, Gorillaz).

White loses to fucking Daft Punk because all of you suck. Next is Mozart vs. Beethoven. I vote Beethoven.

MOZART ALL THE WAY! :D

Beethoven: Composed German-style/language works
Mozart: Composed German AND Italian-style/language works

Beethoven: 1 opera, rarely performed
Mozart: Many still-successful operas, in Italian and German, with "The Marriage of Figaro" and "The Magic Flute" two of the most performed operas WORLDWIDE.

(Even if you're not an opera fan, I'd again argue diversity/success in multiple genres has to count.)

Beethoven excels in symphonies, with his 5th, 6th, and 9th especially famous, but Mozart has incredibly-popular and indelible symphonies as well, 29, 34, and 40, just to name three.

And Mozart began composing his first pieces when he was 8 years old or so...

Mozart wrote some great symphonies. I especially like No. 36 and 39-41. His piano concerti are also fantastic (No. 21 is my favorite, superior to Beethoven's even though Beethoven's violin concerto is great.

On a per capita basis I like Mozart better.
Putin33 (111 D)

Also, I would say Mozart's music is better for choral works. On that point alone Mozart should win.

Hmm, rereading my post looks like I'm saying Mozart isn't good. That isn't what I meant, really. I just really like Beethoven, and Mozart made good and bad things. Mozart was sort of the Beatles, really.

Mozart, though it is a very close call.

"That isn't what I meant, really. I just really like Beethoven, and Mozart made good and bad things."

Such as...? Not saying Mozart didn't write something bad--just about everyone does--but I don't think I've listened to anything of his I'd call "bad."

His works for me range from OMFGAMAZINGLETMERANTABOUTWHY to "...eh...that was decent background music for 10 minutes."

Nothing truly "bad."

Need a Substitute Player
One player in a game has gone MIA and the balance is completely thrown off without him playing. If anybody wants to take over England in this game: http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=147466&msgCountryID=0 then please let me know so I can get the admin to swap you in. It is a 7 day phase game with a cheap buy in so there isn't a huge commitment but it would help the game and England is not in a bad spot anyway.

I'm thinking of getting a radio for my car, probably starting off with CB and then maybe upgrading to Ham. I'd imagine there is an overlap between Diplomacy and Ham radio, so I thought I'd see if anyone has any thoughts.

Webdiplomacy Tournament
We have nearly filled all 3 boards with official players. I currently have two players on stand-by incase we can't fill the boards. Hellenic Riot has agreed to join if we get to 20 which is just 2 players away. Surely we have 2 players that would like to donate $10 and join this unprecedented online tournament format!

Welcome Back, NHL Hockey! Who Makes the Playoffs, and Who Hoists the Cup?
The Good Old Hockey Game is back again! :) The (grrr) defending Stanley Cup Champion Kings look amazing...my beloved Anaheim Ducks upgraded, and look to make another run, as the Blackhawks, Blues, Avs and Wild are all on the rise in the Wild Wild West. The Bruins and Canadiens still look great, the Rangers look to rebound, the Pens and Caps look to rebound as well...who makes the playoffs, and come June, which Captain gets to hoist Lord Stanley's Cup? :D

Call Out for Fill-Ins
Alright, while there's still time to sign up, today is the last day, and I get the impression that who we have is going to be "it". This is a call to those in the forum that want to play in the tournament but don't want the buy-in. This is a low-committment committing to only the round which you sign up for. We need 5 players that want to start this round to fill boards. I will take the 5 players with the highest reliability ratings.

NFL Pick 'em Week 6: Who's For Real?
Week 6 has already seen Andrew Luck and the Colts pop the Texans' bubble...it also features a match-up between the surprising Bills and the surprisingly-inconsistent Patriots. The Cowboys roll into Seattle red-hot to take on the Seahawks in their house of pain. The Panthers and Bengals square off to see who's for real and who's in trouble, and the same goes for the Bears/Falcons and Giants/Eagles game. Week 6...Pick 'em!
