The Greatest Musical Act Tournament: Broup A: 1600s-1960
And so we begin The Greatest Musical Act Tournament with Group A...or, as every group will be called here, "The Group of Death" (as the World Cup has taught me that's the only name to give to any group ever.) :p How will the Great Composers fare? Which immortal band or act will bring about the most outrage? Who will Team Vergil pull for THIS time...while Shakespeare sulks in the corner, STILL wondering how he lost...TWICE. :p Here we go!

Clash of the Titans...and I'm very much at cross purposes...

On the one hand, I nominated Dylan, but on the other hand...it's THE BEATLES...
On the one hand, Dylan was a big influence on them...but on the other hand...it's THE BEATLES...
On the one hand, Dylan had the longer career...but on the other hand...

+1 BEATLES

I agree with rojimy--I'd simply listen to one more than the other, and while both are titans, and I'd argue both can captivate the mind, the Fab Four have a slight edge when it comes to capturing the heart as well (there's something to be said for having written songs like Let It Be, I am the Walrus, and Across the Universe on one end, AND easily-digestible pop-tastic hits like I Want to Hold Your Hand, When I Saw Her Standing There, and Help! on the other.)

So I take the latter titan over the former...

Watch me do the total opposite when we get to the Match of the Tournament thus far, Mozart vs. Beethoven. ;)

Gonna put out a call for 2 day time limits once we get to the semi-finals. Cross-genre conversation might take a bit longer. Maybe not. Also, we're gonna hit the weekend, so people might be busy.

Two incredible artists, so it's emotionally hard to do it, but the choice is certainly clear -- Beatles.

And Putin continues to ignore the fact that popular acclaim over time counts a good deal for just about everyone else here *but* him, and takes the view that the Kinks, of all bands, would've sunk the Fab Four, if only, if only, if only, because reasons.

And I'd like to again point out you yourself have no problem picking a poll tested winner (Mr. Wagner)...and it's not like Bob Dylan's unpopular, either, so quit acting like popular picks are always poor ones.
Putin33 (111 D)
04 Oct 14 UTC
They're not always poor ones. But every single thing you like is chosen because others like it.
Putin33 (111 D)
04 Oct 14 UTC
Yeah, because the Kinks are just 'some band' are aren't widely hailed as one of the great groups of the 60s.

"They're not always poor ones. But every single thing you like is chosen because others like it."

No, I like the things I like because I like them on their own merits, despite what others--including you--might say. I really don't care if you like him or not, D.H. Lawrence is still one of my favorite authors. So is George Bernard Shaw...Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Marcel Proust are two other rising favorites, and not one of them was ever taught to me in a class, anywhere (I had one class where I had one short story--"The Rocking Horse Winner"--by Lawrence, but as I read him before that class and have never had a class teach the works for which I treasure him, you can count him in this group, too.)

And it's not as if most of my friends or anyone here goes around with an iPod of classical and opera, so...yeah, no, I listen to what I listen to, again, because I LIKE IT, not because it's in the zeitgeist or popular...I'm just as anti-populist as you.

"Keep the hate coming"

Ditto.

Which is why you base virtually every commentary you make with an opening salvo about how *so many people agree that so and so is TEH GREATEST* You cannot make a single argument without appealing to popular opinion.
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
04 Oct 14 UTC
Because when it comes to *ranking* someone/something, then yes, critical and public opinion *does* matter.

When it comes to me deciding whether or not I'll read something for the first time, however, I'm interested in that as well as a variety of other factors, such as when it was written, by whom, the style, its influence and significance, who/what it was influenced by, if I think it'll benefit me in my studies or if I'll just enjoy it, what gaps in my reading I still have to fill, and so on and so forth.

And you seem to revel in contradicting pubic opinion as much as I allegedly argue for it in the cases of those like Shakespeare, Mozart and the Beatles...

All of which is beside the original point of why you (apparently) don't think the Beatles did anything original at all ever, despite the fact that, yes, you're basically alone in that opinion here...which I'd argue would matter because, hey, if on the one side 99 people say X, and 1 person says Y...

Y better make a pretty damn AMAZING argument...otherwise...99 vs. 1...
Putin33 (111 D)
04 Oct 14 UTC
Oy vey. I never said the Beatles didn't do *anything* original. My comment about Dylan was in reference to my previous criticisms of him for *not being original* from basically the 80s on. It was a comment in praise of Dylan, not a criticism of the Beatles.

You really are terrible at this whole paying attention bit. You can't help yourself, you always have to shoot from the hip and attack without thinking.
Putin33 (111 D)

And where did I say anything bad about Mozart for christ sake?

obiwanobiwan (248 D)
04 Oct 14 UTC
"And where did I say anything bad about Mozart for christ sake?"

You didn't, I was referring to the fact that I have defended him as well on a popular opinion/acclaim platform, in part.

"My comment about Dylan was in reference to my previous criticisms of him for *not being original* from basically the 80s on. It was a comment in praise of Dylan, not a criticism of the Beatles."

Fair enough, but given your past history of bashing the Beatles, and how well-established that is, that comment when Dylan is vs. the Beatles right now is easy enough to misunderstand as a knock at the Lads from Liverpool.
ghug (5068 D(B))

Seeing as you've been very verbal about attacking both The Beatles and Dylan and then you opened your vote for Dylan with "[a]t least," I don't think it's reasonable to criticize Obi so harshly for misunderstanding you.

Dylan - like 2
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
04 Oct 14 UTC
Which is a shame...Dylan doesn't deserve to be blown out...

I've said it before, but I do genuinely think both those artists will stand up over time and continue to be heard decades and centuries from now; they did a great job both capturing and transcending their times in both their music and lyrics, and Lennon and Dylan in particular are pretty notable public figures in that 1960s/70s era.

In a shocking turn of events, the Beatles win.

Our four quarter-final matchups are:
Jack White vs. Daft Punk
Nirvana vs. U2
Led Zeppelin vs. The Beatles
Mozart vs. Beethoven

Next up is Jack White vs. Daft Punk. I vote White.

One player in a game has gone MIA and the balance is completely thrown off without him playing. If anybody wants to take over England in this game: http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=147466&msgCountryID=0 then please let me know so I can get the admin to swap you in. It is a 7 day phase game with a cheap buy in so there isn't a huge commitment but it would help the game and England is not in a bad spot anyway.

Webdiplomacy Tournament
We have nearly filled all 3 boards with official players. I currently have two players on stand-by incase we can't fill the boards. Hellenic Riot has agreed to join if we get to 20 which is just 2 players away. Surely we have 2 players that would like to donate $10 and join this unprecedented online tournament format!

Welcome Back, NHL Hockey! Who Makes the Playoffs, and Who Hoists the Cup?
The Good Old Hockey Game is back again! :) The (grrr) defending Stanley Cup Champion Kings look amazing...my beloved Anaheim Ducks upgraded, and look to make another run, as the Blackhawks, Blues, Avs and Wild are all on the rise in the Wild Wild West. The Bruins and Canadiens still look great, the Rangers look to rebound, the Pens and Caps look to rebound as well...who makes the playoffs, and come June, which Captain gets to hoist Lord Stanley's Cup? :D

Call Out for Fill-Ins
Alright, while there's still time to sign up, today is the last day, and I get the impression that who we have is going to be "it". This is a call to those in the forum that want to play in the tournament but don't want the buy-in. This is a low-committment committing to only the round which you sign up for. We need 5 players that want to start this round to fill boards. I will take the 5 players with the highest reliability ratings.

NFL Pick 'em Week 6: Who's For Real?
Week 6 has already seen Andrew Luck and the Colts pop the Texans' bubble...it also features a match-up between the surprising Bills and the surprisingly-inconsistent Patriots. The Cowboys roll into Seattle red-hot to take on the Seahawks in their house of pain. The Panthers and Bengals square off to see who's for real and who's in trouble, and the same goes for the Bears/Falcons and Giants/Eagles game. Week 6...Pick 'em!
