The Greatest Musical Act Tournament: Broup A: 1600s-1960
And so we begin The Greatest Musical Act Tournament with Group A...or, as every group will be called here, "The Group of Death" (as the World Cup has taught me that's the only name to give to any group ever.) :p How will the Great Composers fare? Which immortal band or act will bring about the most outrage? Who will Team Vergil pull for THIS time...while Shakespeare sulks in the corner, STILL wondering how he lost...TWICE. :p Here we go!

Those two songs are definitely good places to start. It's fair if you just don't like them.
Animal collective and Armstrong

At least I found Alt-J thru this tourney, so it hasn't been a complete waste.
Yonni (136 D(S))
24 Sep 14 UTC
Rojimy, Alt-J just released a new album too. On first listen, I don't like it as much as their first album but it's worth checking out.
Jeff Kuta (2066 D)

Anyone could have advanced far in the 90s-now bracket. It is full of utter garbage.
Yonni (136 D(S))
24 Sep 14 UTC
There definitely was a lot of filler - who would you have from that era?
2ndWhiteLine (2596 D(B))
24 Sep 14 UTC
At this point we can just advance to the 90s final between Jack White and Daft Punk. If you nominate garbage, then the bracket is going to be garbage. How Wilco isn't still alive I have no idea.
Jeff Kuta (2066 D)
24 Sep 14 UTC
First, I disagree with the time frames. Should be Pre-1950, 50s and 60s, 70s and 80s, 90s to present. At least the established 90s bands would knock out the crappy bands with only 2 albums in the past 10 years.

I'd have nominated Beyoncé even though she wouldn't have won because of the site demographics. That she wasn't even nominated speaks volumes. Muse should be in there IMO.

Portishead, Foo Fighters, Radiohead, Nirvana, Propaghandi, Stone Roses, Green Day, NIN, and more should all be in a 90s to present bracket.(or some of them not at all)
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
24 Sep 14 UTC
Then you should have nominated her.

SOAD/Bach
mendax (321 D)
24 Sep 14 UTC
I don't fully understand why there seems to be so many negative comments about SoaD - they're an incredibly influential band that have been going for two decades now, and a lot of their songs cover real, important topics.
Jeff Kuta (2066 D)
24 Sep 14 UTC
I wasn't on the site when the nominating process was happening. :P
Yonni (136 D(S))
24 Sep 14 UTC
Jeff, the brackets were divided like that after all the noms were in. We obviously didn't get an even amount of bands from every decade so I very roughly pigeon holed them. To be honest, I expected people to shift them around.

Also, the brackets are actually mid 90s-present and 80s-mid 90s which explains why some of the bands you mentioned aren't in the most recent group.

Beyonce definitely would have been a good nomination. She'd get votes over a lot of bands there. And meh to Muse.
rojimy1123 (597 D)
24 Sep 14 UTC
Still a littlee miffed that I rescinded my Tool nomination. They might've actually done some damage in the bracket.
Jeff Kuta (2066 D)
24 Sep 14 UTC
I understand why the breaks had to be made that way. I just think that the final choices were somewhat skewed toward newer bands with little track record. It's all good. Ya gotta work with what ya got.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
24 Sep 14 UTC
Muse should have been in over Good Charlotte, Rihanna should have been in over Lady Gaga, Beck should have been in over whatever bullshit Propagandhi is, and Beyonce should have been in over anyone in the 90s/present bracket and won. Oh well. I'm not the only one who considered those nominations but no one pulled the trigger.
mendax (321 D)
24 Sep 14 UTC
Propagandhi are a punk band that started in the 90s and are still going strong.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
24 Sep 14 UTC
It doesn't matter if they are. Everyone had their own individual nomination choices. There are simply better groups that got left out, but oh well. Beyonce should have been an honorary alongside MJ maybe.

What makes you think Rihanna is a better muSician than gaga when she doesn't write her own songs? What makes her a candidate for this competition if all she has is vocals. Nobody is lamenting va lack of yo yo ma when he is a better cellob player than she is singer.

What is good about muse? Why are you so fired up about replacing a shitty one dimensional pop punk band for a shitty one dimensional rock band?

Your opinions are never valid bo sox. If you want to share them at least pretend to want to have a discussion. You don't control how people think no matter how bad you want to.
ghug (5068 D(B))

Jeff Kuta (2066 D)

"who would you have from that era?"

I would have preferred to have seen The Strokes, The Killers, Franz Ferdinand, Incubus, Smashing Pumpkins, MGMT, Weezer, among others.
ghug (5068 D(B))
25 Sep 14 UTC
The Killers were already eliminated. Also they suck. The rest of those bands are better than a lot of the nominations, but there were better candidates that were nominated and haven't made it this far.

The real problem with that bracket is that we've voted out some good bands. Kanye, Eminem, Jack White, and Spoon are all pretty worthy of making it as far as they have, but I think Wilco, Alt-J, LCD Soundsystem, and GY!BE were all pretty good bands that got shafted.
Putin33 (111 D)
25 Sep 14 UTC
GY!BE made it farther than they deserved.
ghug (5068 D(B))
25 Sep 14 UTC
I'm not the biggest GY!BE fan, but they're pretty cool.

Need a Substitute Player
One player in a game has gone MIA and the balance is completely thrown off without him playing. If anybody wants to take over England in this game: http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=147466&msgCountryID=0 then please let me know so I can get the admin to swap you in. It is a 7 day phase game with a cheap buy in so there isn't a huge commitment but it would help the game and England is not in a bad spot anyway.

I'm thinking of getting a radio for my car, probably starting off with CB and then maybe upgrading to Ham. I'd imagine there is an overlap between Diplomacy and Ham radio, so I thought I'd see if anyone has any thoughts.

Webdiplomacy Tournament
We have nearly filled all 3 boards with official players. I currently have two players on stand-by incase we can't fill the boards. Hellenic Riot has agreed to join if we get to 20 which is just 2 players away. Surely we have 2 players that would like to donate $10 and join this unprecedented online tournament format!

OK, we're playing a gunboat right now and there's been a crystal clear stalemate for two whole years, but the 17-center guy won't accept the draw. What to do? We can't play all night.

Welcome Back, NHL Hockey! Who Makes the Playoffs, and Who Hoists the Cup?
The Good Old Hockey Game is back again! :) The (grrr) defending Stanley Cup Champion Kings look amazing...my beloved Anaheim Ducks upgraded, and look to make another run, as the Blackhawks, Blues, Avs and Wild are all on the rise in the Wild Wild West. The Bruins and Canadiens still look great, the Rangers look to rebound, the Pens and Caps look to rebound as well...who makes the playoffs, and come June, which Captain gets to hoist Lord Stanley's Cup? :D

Call Out for Fill-Ins
Alright, while there's still time to sign up, today is the last day, and I get the impression that who we have is going to be "it". This is a call to those in the forum that want to play in the tournament but don't want the buy-in. This is a low-committment committing to only the round which you sign up for. We need 5 players that want to start this round to fill boards. I will take the 5 players with the highest reliability ratings.

NFL Pick 'em Week 6: Who's For Real?
Week 6 has already seen Andrew Luck and the Colts pop the Texans' bubble...it also features a match-up between the surprising Bills and the surprisingly-inconsistent Patriots. The Cowboys roll into Seattle red-hot to take on the Seahawks in their house of pain. The Panthers and Bengals square off to see who's for real and who's in trouble, and the same goes for the Bears/Falcons and Giants/Eagles game. Week 6...Pick 'em!
