The Greatest Musical Act Tournament: Broup A: 1600s-1960
And so we begin The Greatest Musical Act Tournament with Group A...or, as every group will be called here, "The Group of Death" (as the World Cup has taught me that's the only name to give to any group ever.) :p How will the Great Composers fare? Which immortal band or act will bring about the most outrage? Who will Team Vergil pull for THIS time...while Shakespeare sulks in the corner, STILL wondering how he lost...TWICE. :p Here we go!

I'll vote Cole Porter only because he shouldn't get shut out...

He was my own nomination, but it has to be Bach in this match-up.

Are the SoaD voters ambivalent to Wilco or just huge SoaD fans?

Bach............6 - 1................Cole Porter

In my case, both.
I find Wilco mediocre, I would never chose to listen to them on my own. But I prefer them to system.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))

I'm not particularly into either of them but Wilco doesn't work for me. Some groups just don't. Neither group would win a matchup against either Kanye or Eminem anyway (or Jack White, if he somehow wins).
I used to not care for SoaD, but started really listening to them recently, and although I can see why many don't like them, I think they are fantastic.

By the way, guys--

Do we like this division-style better, or the simple 1 vs. 65, 2 vs. 63-style seeding of the Author tourney?

I ask since I'll probably make more of these tournaments after we wrap this one up and take a nice break, lol.
Yonni (136 D(S))

Shenanigans.
Especially Nels Cline era Wilco for those of you who like your face-melting guitarsists.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))

Obi, we should have random seedings in the first round like we did here and then seed them from the second round onward based on the number of votes they got or based even on margin of victory in their first round matchup. If things still aren't perfect, great, we improve it from there, but both this and the author thing have been messy at best.
rojimy1123 (597 D)

Said it last round and I'll say it again, I prefer Son Volt to Wilco.
Jeff Kuta (2066 D)

No votes from me on these pairings.

As for the next tournament, here's how I would suggest it be done:

0) Initial set up, the tournament organizers decide what the four brackets will be. Then, the TOs pre-seed "top half" and "bottom half" of each quarter based on their personal preferences and then randomly assign pairings, 1 top vs 1 bottom. Some bias will creep into the initial setup, but not too much, and you can assure there are no "Bach vs Beethoven" matchups in the first round.

After that, if you want to do some re-seeding based on margin of victory or other metric, that's fine. You could also do another "top half" vs "bottom half" based on the votes and randomly assign the next round pairings the same way. The UEFA Champions League does this after a fashion, and it's a pretty good system.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))

Maybe we could just have a tournament to determine the best bracket and seeding system.

I think SoaD is a solid hard rock band, but Wilco is an amazing alt rock/alt country band. I think if you're torn between them, at least consider that Wilco has been touring for 20 years and has only ever gotten better, while SoaD was big for only a few years and really flamed out quickly.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
16 Sep 14 UTC
If Wilco has been touring for 20 years, why are they in this group?
2ndWhiteLine (2596 D(B))
16 Sep 14 UTC
Why is Johnny Cash in the same group as Mozart when he put out his last album in 2002 before his death in 2003?

Wilco really has two phases of their career; pre-YHF and post-YHF. Yankee Hotel Foxtrot came out in 2001, so they're probably in the right bracket. Their 90s stuff is more similar to Son Volt and Uncle Tupelo in that its more alt-country sounding than their later material.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
16 Sep 14 UTC
Yeah, but if you look at where the Foo Fighters and Green Day are, it's based on the beginning of their careers, not at their peak. Obi said so somewhere; it's buried. I'm just complaining because I can.

Ban bo_sox for advocating meta-tournamenting!
rojimy1123 (597 D)
16 Sep 14 UTC
@Jeff Kuta...good ideas. I would also recommend adding stipulation to nominations, something like having to get a couple of +1's as "seconds" just to eliminate some BS noms straightaway (ie Lady Gaga in this tourney).

Bo, I made the groups one day while I was board at work. There were a lot of bands and they weren't evenly spread across eras so they were very crudely pigeon holed. To have split it properly, we would have needed the nominations to be more evenly spaced.

Wilco...........4 - 5.....System of a Down
Bach..........Lots - Few........Cole Porter
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
16 Sep 14 UTC
Or we could have put them together. The 60s are stacked, the 90s are relatively empty. It should be biased this way, but we should carry all those 60s groups further rather than singling out just one and pitting them against the other three bracket winners.

Need a Substitute Player
One player in a game has gone MIA and the balance is completely thrown off without him playing. If anybody wants to take over England in this game: http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=147466&msgCountryID=0 then please let me know so I can get the admin to swap you in. It is a 7 day phase game with a cheap buy in so there isn't a huge commitment but it would help the game and England is not in a bad spot anyway.

I'm thinking of getting a radio for my car, probably starting off with CB and then maybe upgrading to Ham. I'd imagine there is an overlap between Diplomacy and Ham radio, so I thought I'd see if anyone has any thoughts.

Webdiplomacy Tournament
We have nearly filled all 3 boards with official players. I currently have two players on stand-by incase we can't fill the boards. Hellenic Riot has agreed to join if we get to 20 which is just 2 players away. Surely we have 2 players that would like to donate $10 and join this unprecedented online tournament format!

Eternal stalemate?
OK, we're playing a gunboat right now and there's been a crystal clear stalemate for two whole years, but the 17-center guy won't accept the draw. What to do? We can't play all night.

Welcome Back, NHL Hockey! Who Makes the Playoffs, and Who Hoists the Cup?
The Good Old Hockey Game is back again! :) The (grrr) defending Stanley Cup Champion Kings look amazing...my beloved Anaheim Ducks upgraded, and look to make another run, as the Blackhawks, Blues, Avs and Wild are all on the rise in the Wild Wild West. The Bruins and Canadiens still look great, the Rangers look to rebound, the Pens and Caps look to rebound as well...who makes the playoffs, and come June, which Captain gets to hoist Lord Stanley's Cup? :D

Draw or Cancel?
I thought it might be interesting to get peoples thoughts on 'fairness' in a situation where one or more players fail to fight to the bitter end because - neither a draw or a cancel usually seems fair.

Call Out for Fill-Ins
Alright, while there's still time to sign up, today is the last day, and I get the impression that who we have is going to be "it". This is a call to those in the forum that want to play in the tournament but don't want the buy-in. This is a low-committment committing to only the round which you sign up for. We need 5 players that want to start this round to fill boards. I will take the 5 players with the highest reliability ratings.

NFL Pick 'em Week 6: Who's For Real?
Week 6 has already seen Andrew Luck and the Colts pop the Texans' bubble...it also features a match-up between the surprising Bills and the surprisingly-inconsistent Patriots. The Cowboys roll into Seattle red-hot to take on the Seahawks in their house of pain. The Panthers and Bengals square off to see who's for real and who's in trouble, and the same goes for the Bears/Falcons and Giants/Eagles game. Week 6...Pick 'em!
