Important theological question:
Very specific... see inside, Christians and atheists esp.

@ TGM

"P1: If the resurrection is true, Christianity should be considered true."

This is refuted by dexter's alien argument. He kindly supplied a scenario in which the resurrection could be true without supporting Christianity. Your, strawman argument, carries no weight whatsoever. While I admire your attempt to get on the offense, you simply cannot do that legitimately by telling the opposition what they must argue. Once again, please stop telling me what I ought to be arguing and attend to what I’m actually saying, which is simply this.

Several people witnessed an event with their own eyes. An event that you admit would have to be a singular event. You suggest the odds against it were 50 billion to 1. From a historical standpoint, as you agreed for the sake of argument, the evidence is compelling that this event occurred. That is precisely why the resurrection is a singular event, even if you do not accept Christianity. It only happened once with no opportunity for study or replication. It doesn’t matter if he was alien, divine, or if he just had some abnormality that allowed him to come back. The event itself cannot be replicated and is therefore not able to be assessed by science. Thus far I've cited two scientists (Gould and Berger) who agree with that. One is a theist and the other wasn't. Still you insist their assessment isn’t valid based apparently on the fact that your argument crumbles if it is. I agree with these two scientists about the nature of science and its neutrality on this issue.
@TGM

When did reductio ad absurdum stop being a totally valid form of argument.

It never was if it intrudes into the fallacy of the General Rule. It is complete nonsense to suggest that I or anyone else must completely reject natural law simply because we believe in Christ’s resurrection. There are plenty of fine scientists (Dyson Freeman, Issac Newton, Francis Collier, Theodosius Dobzhansky, the list goes on and on). that have accepted the very same event and functioned quite comfortably in the arena of science making great contributions. How exactly do I assume supernatural causes for everything? How exactly do you know my thoughts better than I do? Can you read the minds of the scientists I cited too, or does it only work with me?

One thing I will say, and this is my digressing from my own topic I've pushed so hard to maintain lol.... is that the distinction between what I call Pauline Christianity and the Christianity that Christ seemed to be establishing is actually huge. Most of what Christians do today is because of what Paul said more than what Jesus said. And yet Paul never even knew Jesus. That doesn't bother anyone but me?
@TGM

"In order to argue that the resurrection should not be repeatable, you have to first say that Jesus is distinct from other men."

Not so much, let's take a hypothetical. Bob just died and a day later comes back to life. Do we kill him to see if he can do it again? No, of course not. So, even if it were to happen in front of you, it wouldn't be replicable. On top of that if you saw it you could interpret it any way that you choose.

Just a side note. Try Googling the following in quotes

"scientific refutation of resurrection"
"scientific study of resurrection"
"scientific debate of resurrection"

I've not been able to find a scientist to corroborate your statement that resurrection is an impossibility, and that that can be generalized to the resurrection of Christ. I've found and cited them to say that science can't comment or must remain neutral though. Yet, if it's any consolation, I found a rabbi who agrees with you.
Paul was no doubt a charismatic preacher. As for any particular problems with Paul and Christ being at odds on any issuem, the simple solution is to follow the gospels if a contradiction is found. I've seen places in which Paul commented on more than Christ did, probably by virtue of the fact that he was out in different cultures, where Jesus was preaching to a pretty homgeneous crowd for the most part. What particular problems di you see and I'd probably be better able to comment.

no it doesn't bother me at all, especially given the many different churches which were founded or split based on the opinions of people who never knew Jesus in their lifetimes (all the protestant churchs, and the eastern orthodox church.)

Also apparently Paul saw a vision of the Resurrected Jesus and the way to Damascus, so he like 150-500 others did see Jesus after his Crusifition. It don't see what difference it makes, he like many others think they saw Jesus he had been killed, and isn't that the most important point about Christanity? That Jesus came back from the DEAD!

*Dipping my toe into an exhausting but worthwhile logical exercise* This discussion reminded me of an old religious studies lecture. We spent a lot of time on the Authentic voice of Jesus. James Breech wrote a book called the Silence of Jesus and if I remember correctly (been quite a few years) in it he makes the argument that there are something like 18-20 sayings/parables from the book of Mark (as per CA - the first recorded gospel) that can be used as the base for an authentic historical Jesus. His argument - first was that the etymology for these phrases is untouched by the promotion of Christianity and second - that the very inclusion of these was so embarrassing to early Christians and their promotion of Christianity that they must be in fact authentic.

The differences between Paul and Jesus aren't as great as they seem at first glance--kind of like the differences between the Hebrew Bible and the New Testament. They're both dealing with the issue of people who can't follow the law. Jesus focused on Jews who were unable or unwilling to follow the law and stressed God's desire to draw in all of his people. When you consider that there were a lot of Gentiles who openly acknowledged their belief in (the Jewish) God, Paul is simply taking another step in Jesus' message that people who don't completely follow the law can have a relationship with God. Remember that only people born or adopted into the Jewish nation were bound to follow the Law. As a Jew, Paul followed the law himself and encouraged other Jews to do the same; he just argued that the Christian church was meant to be a trans-national community that incorporated Jews and Gentiles.

OK, that's off topic too.

@Thucydides: I still find my comparison valid, even if they claimed to have seen someone they knew being resurrected.

You note yourself a very interesting point, namely that the people who died for their beliefs actually did not believe Jesus was resurrected, but only believed in the general message he wanted to get across. Two scenarios are applicable here:
1) They did not believe it, but they said it anyway, to convince the "masses" who would not be that impressed by philosophical arguments.
2) They did not believe it, but the story was later added to exaggerate the story (either, again, to convince the masses; or simply because that's what happens with stories that are not written down for a long time)
@ Evil Grass

Both scenarios start with the unsupported assertion that "they" all of them did not believe. Can you produce any evidence to support the assertion? There is plenty of evidence to support the opposite idea that they did in fact believe in Christ's resurrection.

Firefox (3.6) issue
Sometimes I cannot use my wose wheel and keyboard on this page. Something on this page suddenly disables both. For example, I want to write an ingame message and suddenly, the letters I enter do not appear anymore and I get a sound message instead (ping. Windows Vista here).
It just happened when I was writing this message, after the first "s" of "ingame message".

I tried to disable ABP but without effect. I don't have any other plugins.

How does cheating get investigated on this site?
I know I am new to this site (but I am certainly not new to diplomacy, either web based or otherwise) so how do I get anyone to investigate possible cheating on this particular site - if indeed any investigations into cheating do actually occur on this site.

It is just that I have an gunboat game that has an awful of very co-ordinated moves - more than you could resonably expect from a gunboat game.
