Prop 8 OVERTURNED!
I'm not gay, but I'm really, truly happy about this...religion has no place deciding who gets to marry who.

Hey--if a bitter man and gold-digger woman can get married and divorce so soon, why deny Mr. Sulu his right go to Warp with someone he loves? ;) How do you feel about all of this? (And check our Jon Steart's Daily Show's talk about all of this, informative AND hilarious!)

God's Law is the highest in the land???

The Founders, who sperated Church from State, might have something to say about THAT...

God's Law extends from the parking lot to the chapel--and no further.

America is NOT a Christian State, even if the majority of its inhabitants are Christian.

The highest law in the land is the Law of Common Sense...which is all too often violated (and yes, the highest "real" law of the land is that document which begins "We The People...")
"One of the Constitution's many functions is to prevent a majority from tyrannizing a minority. That is why to change the Constitution requires much more than a simple majority." So, the United States is NOT a democratic republic? Anyway, why should I have to follow the constitution. There are two things that would bind me to a set of laws. 1) The person who created the law created me (i.e God's Law, or parent's rules)
2) I agreed to be binded by those laws.
Now let's check the constitution against those requirements. The government did not create me, and I never agreed to the constitution. The constitution has no authority over me.

@Bob: I don't believe that is right, because we should be in anarchy, where that wouldn't happen, but if we are to be a democratic republic (as so many people claim we are) then that is what should happen.
"God's Law extends from the parking lot to the chapel--and no further." And you claim to be a Christian! Are you saying it's okay to commit adultery as long as it's not in the chapel?
@Bob: "the invisible sky wizard's law" Taking cheap shots at my religion goes way to far. That really hurts me.

If you do not like the legal system in place in this country, feel free to leave. That is one of your rights under the Constitution.

But by staying and taking part in our society, you, by your actions, accept the laws of this land. *You are free to change this!*

I'm so glad you don't think the law applies to you. Next time you're pulled over, try that argument with the cops. Let me know how that goes.

If I didn't already know you're a high school kid, I'd have guessed it now.
Awww, I feel bad that your feelings got slightly hurt when you were confronted by the fact that some people find your beliefs utterly silly, and supported by less evidence than Pastafarianism.
Jack_Klein (897 D)
08 Aug 10 UTC
Hey, you think I'm going to hell.

So I'm feeling fairly justified in thinking that your religion IS silly. We happen to agree about that topic a lot. You think other religions are wrong and deceitful... I agree. I just extend it to one more.

I don't see any reason not to apply the same standard to religious ideas that I would for any other idea. If the idea is silly or wrong, I'm going to treat it as such. I don't see any particular reason to attach reverence to your ideas about your worship of a zombie that you ritualistically consume via his blood and flesh on a regular basis.
@Bob: I was hurt by the fact that you insulted my Lord and Savior, and by extension, me. Did you enjoy insulting me? Did it feel good? Because if you did, you are a sick person.

@Jack: But I don't feel ANY country's legal system applies to me. And why should I have to leave? The constitution still doesn't apply to me know matter where I live.
@Jack: But Bob actually went so far as to insult my God. I consider that a very low blow, something only a despicable human being would do.
@Jack and Bob: I have to go to bed now, so I won't be posting.
I believe what obiwan2 is saying when he claims that the invisible sky wizard's law extends from the parking lot to the chapel is that America is not, thankfully, yet a theocracy, and thus the oral traditions of a seminomadic tribe from 2500 years ago that have been translated through at least three languages to get to you do not and should not have police powers behind them, or at least they shouldn't until a secular government gets around to codifying them.
Jack_Klein (897 D)

So you're more than willing to TAKE from a system without feeling any obligation to that system? I think you owe the government quite a bit of money for your education, safety while growing up (cops), and many other things that this oppressive illegitimate government has forced upon you.

You're almost as silly as the kids who say "Communism would be perfect if only we could implement it!"

There are two types of people who are serious anarchists. Teenagers who love reading more political theory than they can digest, and crazy people.

I'm going to compliment you, and assume you've just read too much political theory without taking the time to digest it.

One more thing: "that you ritualistically consume via his blood and flesh on a regular basis" Do you understand symbolism? The wine SYMBOLIZES his blood, the bread SYMBOLIZES his body. There is nothing wrong with that ritual.
@Jack: I didn't ask the government to perform those services. Anyway, I am a teenager. But Sicarius isn't. Do you think he is crazy?

@Bob: But whether you believe it or not, God has the power to send you to hell for disobeying His Law. And I'd hope you would agree that if God exists and has that power, that His Law would be the supreme Law of the land.
Jack_Klein (897 D)
08 Aug 10 UTC
Hey, you eat your God. The miracle of transubtiation, or whatever that is. Either you believe you symbolically eat your God, or literally eat your God, its of no relevance to me.

If you're OK with committing ritual cannibalism, more power to you. Its not any crazier than anything else I've read about the various religions.
@Jack: That's not what Jesus meant by symbolize. Why don't you try reading the Bible for once?
Fuck, dude, referring to the invisible being who lives in the sky and has magic powers as an invisible sky wizard is insulting to it? I would think something so powerful would be beyond getting insulted over what some loser posting on a message board has to say about it. If it's any consolation, I didn't really mean to insult your invisible sky wizard buddy when I referred to it as an invisible sky wizard. I think I'd have to actually think there was even a slight chance of the invisible sky wizard existing for me to intend to insult it.

If I refer derisively to magic sparkly horses with horns, am I being insulting to unicorns?
Anyway, I'm going to bed now.
Jack_Klein (897 D)
08 Aug 10 UTC
But they did. And once you're a full adult, you can participate in the workings of our government.

And I think Sicarius is a moron, actually. Possibly crazy, but I'm not a psychologist.

@Bob: Calling Him invisible and not real is insulting to Him.
@Jack: I would decline their services, if somebody else would provide them.
Jack_Klein (897 D)

I've read the Bible. Between the murder, genocide, incest, and whatnot, its enough to give Dr. Mengele a major stiffy.

You consume your God. Bread is the body of Christ, and the wine is the blood. Which you eat. Therefore, you eat your God.(and drink!)

I'm sorry I'm pointing out how weird your religion is.... but nothing I'm saying is untrue I might add that I think every other religion is equally weird. There are just more Christians in the Midwest, so they tend to attract my attention more.

Who else is going to be interested in educating and protecting an entitled brat like yourself?

In the past, large mining companies would put people half your age to work in mines, to likely die before they reached the age of 30. Your only value would be the minuscule labor that could be extracted from your tiny body with a minimum of food and care.

It just amuses me that a (likely) middle class white kid from the suburbs is a firebrand for anarchism. You haven't had anything really bad happen to you yet.
Seriously, why do Christians always think no one else has read the Bible? It's the mostt ubiquitous piece of literature on the planet. Occasionally, some people might get curious about it even if they find it to be hogwash.
@Jack:"You haven't had anything really bad happen to you yet" Don't make me laugh. First of all, I'm lower class. My parents are getting divorced. My mom is disabled and smokes. My dad is an alcoholic and cheated on my mom (that's why they're getting divorced), I get bullied a lot, I don't have many friends, and I happen to live in the same moblile home park as Sandra Cantu, the girl who was kidnapped and murdered 1 year and a half ago. So don't tell me nothing bad has happened to me.
Now I'm going to bed, officially.

@Conservative Man, No law would ever exist if it needed unanimous consent... and no law would be worth anything if a criminal (that would be a law breaker) could simply redefine his way out of jail by saying "I never agreed to that law against X". Society realized long ago that some compromise between rights of individuals and the good of society and some compromise between the rights of one individual vs. the rights of another - was called for. The idea of law, of course, far predates democracy... but was still embraced by democracies including ours. With good reason. You want perfect freedom - go live by yourself in the wild somewhere. Seriously. And yes, there is good reason why people don't commonly do that.

You want to live among the family of man - but you won't live by the rules laid down in that family? Give me a break, youngster. God may have created you - and your parents obviously created you... but your country is your tribe and extended family, and it is no accident that people refer to "the Founding Fathers". Your country is also responsible for creating your family, your town, your school, and in a pretty real sense, you. Buck up and accept your country warts and all. It is an imperfect union - but its the best thing going in these parts and unless you want to go it alone or in some commune somewhere, you are stuck with us, your American family. The Constitution is the house rules. Deal with it.

Ever since capitalism and meritocracy became the standard system of economics, exploitation has been committed by man against his fellow man. No system has undermined man’s humanity in the same manner by rewarding those who will exploit their brethren.

This Time On Philosophy Weekly: So Plato, Locke, & Rand Walk Into A Polity's Bar...
We've had a lot of talk on the site, recently, about the role of the State, whether it be how the State should be, it's relationship with the people, or otherwise.
So the question is simple--what is your ideal form of government, your idea of the perfect political theory? Do we have a social contract? What is the function of government? Is there a State of Nature? What are the merits of Government and Anarchism? The State of the State Adress--this time!
