In the World Gunboat Tournament, we had three separate scoring systems, or categories, based on a compilation of the 17 games. I was not the person who devised these scoring systems, but I was the one who calculated the results in the end.
These scoring systems were all in place from the beginning of the tournament, so the players had them in mind as goals.
The first were called "Townsend Points". These were a not-quite-linear progression of points as the draw narrowed, with a solo earning slightly more than double the points of a 2-Way. It went like this:
Solo: 100

2-Way: 48

each
3-Way: 31

each
4-Way: 22

each
5-Way: 17

each
6-Way: 13

each
7-Way: 7

each
I don't remember what it was below this. I think it was something like...
8-Way: 4

each
9-Way: 2

each
10-Way: 1 point each
11-17-Way: Nothing
The second were called "PPSC Points". You got points based on how many supply centers you held at the end of the game. A solo would naturally get the most points, and given that you need 44+ centers to solo World (and start with 3) that's an awful lot of points.
The third were called "Continent Points". Each continent was worth a given number of points, and you got points based on how many full continents you controlled at the end. This, of course, led to very few people on the same continent getting along. It also resulted in "sniping" a single center from someone's continent to deny them all the points. There was an additional reward for soloing.
