The Ancient Med - not year 1
What year is the Ancient Mediterranean set? Definitely not year 1AD, by then the Med was a Roman Lake. Carthage was destroyed in 146BC, Egypt fell to Rome in 47BC, Greece had been Roman for centuries. Only Persia can claim some independence on that map.

What do you think Draugnar means? Draug=wolf and nar=fire.

What?

I just posted that because in Hebrew, "dog" means fish...

Yhat's the elvish version of the name. The Orcish version would be: Scarabal. Though in the Orcish there are 2 words for wolf and 3 for fire so you'd have several possibilities to choose from.

Hellalt. Can you confirm.the validity ofbthe Greek? Hellalt is from Greece so he careful when you type Greek that it is 100% accurate and not from Google Translate. :-)

I would go with "φλογερός λύκος" myself, as it gets the adjectival meaning of fire (correct me if I'm wrong in that that was your intention Draug), but those are acceptable words for fire and wolf, as far as I know.
Draugnar (0 DX)
24 Oct 12 UTC
And fire is.meant to be the adjective. I was playing the dog lord (one of the nazgul) and used Tolkien's appendices in Return of the King.to.develop the name only.to discover later that I had overlooked a singular reference to a character at Orthanc named Draugnar.

I don't know modern Greek, but my homer is pretty good. I think, since Tolkien used older forms of words (dwarves instead of dwarfs) and manners of speech (the further east the fellowship traveled), you should aim for an older formation of the Greek.

To that purpose, λύκοπυρ is about as close as you might get in Homeric. If I remember tomorrow, I'll look through my large desk dictionaries at the office.
So Draugnar = flaming bitch?

@dubm, I'll admit that my knowledge of Greek is very limited, but I've never seen that ending before, and I think that "λύκος" works in Ancient Greek as well.

@THM, does the wolf have that connotation in Greek as well?
No idea, ghug. I lack that linguistic expertise. However, I do hail from San Francisco, where one hears rumors of male bitches well versed in Greek.
ghug (5068 D(B))
24 Oct 12 UTC
Ah, I'm curious now. Is that even a thing in English?
dubmdell (556 D)
24 Oct 12 UTC
Πυρ is of the third declension, ie "consonant declension" or "n-declension." It doesn't look like an ending you've seen probably due to this. I'm not familiar with what specific simplifications Greek underwent from homer to modern. I suspect the loss of third declension may be among them?

I followed basic compound word formation, but I cannot recall at the moment if homer prefers head-initial or head-final compounds. What I wrote is head-initial (so accurate understanding is "fire-wolf" while literal is "wolf-fire," and since English prefers head-final, you'd think the literal is correct, though that is false in Orcish, so too is it false in my made up word). I think he actually uses both based on the meter.

Really, I need to check my dictionaries for the adjective form of πυρ since third declensions can have unpredictable exceptions. It may be better to use φοιβος "shining" since that is used of Helios. The fire connection would be understood to a Homeric contemporary. I'll sleep on it and (probably) remember to check at the office tomorrow. For now, I'll chalk all errors to the late night. Cheers!

All of my knowledge of Greek is of the Homeric variant, but that knowledge is very limited. I didn't realize that your word was a compound and it got me confused.
dubmdell (556 D)
24 Oct 12 UTC
As best I can tell from my grammars (Smyth, in particular), Homer prefers head-final compounds. So πυρλυκος would be more accurate. For metrical reasons, I could conceive of about three reasonable variants. Homer does use noun-noun formations where the initial noun acts as an adjective, so I'm going to stick with πυρλυκος and suggest that a more adjectival form could be used if the meter required.

Draws
Sifting through 10 pages of open positions, I am noticing that it's increasingly uncommon that people actually draw for a CD. In a few games, people have pushed for it, and others have seemed to have no understanding as to why they'd draw for a CD. Did this etiquette just disappear like magic? Pre-1903 CDs should *always* constitute a draw and post-1903 CDs should constitute a draw if they result in a loss of a line that would otherwise be present. When did this stop?
