A Call for Blind Diplomacy Voting (only see your own votes)
Diplomacy should be carried out through your moves, and if press is allowed, through your press, but not through voting signals. Some conspiracy theorists believe their are hidden meanings in unusual votes -- in my experience it is b/c of us cell phone players with fat fingers... Gunboat should not have this communication tool, and in press you can reveal or lie about your votes all you like...

An actual philosophy variant
Choose a philosophical school of thought. If the philosopher fundamentally changed during his writing career, you must also choose which text(s) you will be following. Then, you must hold to that philosophy in all discussions and movements. Why not PP, 5 D, 50hr phases, WTA, orders must be announced. If someone can demonstrate how a proposed action goes against your philosophy, you may not take that action and must do something else. Critiques?

I most obviously agree, not all leftists are pussies. For every uninformed hippie and bleeding-heart "progressive" douchebag on the left there is a blustering greedy rich fuck or idiot zealot hillibilliy on the right. I can agree with you there--believe whatever you believe as long as you know what it is and why you believe it.

For the record, I couldn't decide whether to spell it "hillbilly" or "hillbillie," so I ended up going with "hillbilliy." I thought I'd go with the only obviously wrong choice available.

@phil... I play three sports and work out year-round and have a (relatively) well-rounded diet. It's the weights that keep me big, not the food (and I'm relatively small for a lineman at my age anyway). I'm guessing Draug's the same, but I can't speak for him obviously.

"You can always judge how stupid somebody is by how many Shakespearean quotes they cite. "

Ouch. :-) Well one in a thread shouldn't make me too stupid (although Star Trek used one a movie at a minimum and even named a movie after one). But that insult must really hurt obiwanobiwan's feelings. :-)

@Draug I think that was the intended point.

But if Krellin won't go toe to toe with YJ in a formal debate. Why don't we get 2-3 conservatives versus 2-3 liberals and let them debate it out. Hopefully without the name calling and personal attacks that normally get involved.

"But if Krellin won't go toe to toe with YJ in a formal debate. Why don't we get 2-3 conservatives versus 2-3 liberals and let them debate it out."

This happens DAILY here...geesh, what is so hard to grasp about that concept. In theory, you all say you know where YJ and I stand on issues, so clearly you all think debates occur on a regular basis, except for when YJ runs off to hide and put up hey krellin threads when he can't offer anything useful to say.

Let me make this perfectly clear to you all: I don't let bullies like YJ tell me what to do, when to do it, or how to do it. I will choose the time and place in which I express my opinion, on the topics I choose to express my opinion in.

If you all want to be good little sheep and let others tell you what to do, feel free.

I'm confident of my beliefs, and generally express them quite freely in the manner of my own choosing. Deal with it - I don't negotiate with bullies.

No I said a formal debate for a reason. I don't concider what happens on the forum to be a civil, formal debate. You said you'd just argue with him on here. I was suggesting something a little more formatted.

I wasn't suggesting that you even participate.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))

@CF ... don't we do that all the time? The people that don't want to get harassed just back out and 2-3 people dish out their points and then argue to no end.

See those arguments are also filled with hatred and name calling. Wouldn't it be nice to have a nice formalized debate like what they're doing in the Great Debate thread, though those debates are restricted to religion I believe.

"And for the record, not all leftists are pussies. If you have a leftist belief and actually have a principled belief, and apply your principles across the board and are consistent in your argument, then I’ll respect you. ... Most wanna-be lefties won’t be consistent in their belief…and that’s why they’re pussies."

In fairness, most people don't want to apply consistent logic to input their premises and output a logical answer. Most people on all sides of most disagreements are using gut instinct and rote ideology to form their beliefs, and that only leads to intractable dogma. People who don't use logic to question their underlying beliefs are never willing to change, and I find that outlook very difficult to respect, whether you agree with me or disagree.
krellin (80 DX)

"See those arguments are also filled with hatred and name calling."

Ahhh...you mean like YJ coming in to threads, attacking me, and then running off to create "hey krellin" threads. He isn't worthy of my special attention in a formal debate. He'd quit as soon as he started to get beat and run off, like he always does.
Yellowjacket (835 D(B))

"No I said a formal debate for a reason. I don't concider what happens on the forum to be a civil, formal debate. You said you'd just argue with him on here. I was suggesting something a little more formatted."

Thank you, CF. My point exactly, and thank you for understanding. What krellin does here is not debate. He would get owned badly in a real debate, and he damn well knows it.

And I'd like to remind interested parties that my challenge was clearly stated to be "read-only" open to the public. Why would I shame an idiot in private? He and I already both know he can't stand up to me. The fun for me would be slowly unveiling his incompetence for the world to see, and revelling in his shame while I do it.
krellin (80 DX)
28 Mar 13 UTC
@hecks - Pretty much agree, except for the "to be fair", which kind of dimishes the pussy aspect of by trying to excuse it as common behavior. If it's common, so be it: most people are intellectual pussies.
krellin (80 DX)
28 Mar 13 UTC
@YJ...what you do is enter a thread, throw insults, and then run off and create another "hey krellin" thread.

When you begin to demonstrate that you can participate in a normal conversation, let alone a full debate, maybe I'll have an iota of respect for you and consider something more formal. As it is, you are just a bully, not worthy of my time.
krellin (80 DX)

As for the challenge, it also clearly stated he wanted to run off and do it elsewhere, knowing that very few people would actually take the time to go off and watch/read. Another COWARDLY suggestion of his...

<sigh...> To ill-equipped to come up with his own reply, YJ runs off to the internet to find "witty" links to post. And he wants to debate me? lol What would be the point. I don't click through on random links on the internet, and neither do most people with common sense, especially from the likes of you...
hecks (164 D)
28 Mar 13 UTC
@krellin,
Not trying to excuse it as common, just trying to make it clear that the right and left are equally guilty of ideological dogmatism.
krellin (80 DX)
28 Mar 13 UTC
Celtic - why would I ever agree to set aside special time for YJ? Tell me once in the last month where he has even attempted to engage in an actual conversation?

When I raise children and they disobey, I don't reward them. I sure as hell am not going to reward YJ for his bad behavior by giving him special consideration. When he grows up and learns to communicate...maybe. He's got a long way to go, though. Even up above, he can't comment...he's posts a stupid link! Please...it's like dealing with a 10 year old...

You should use the square debate format. Four sides, two debaters on each side. I for one don't debate, I discuss. Debating implies that there will be a winner and a loser. In a true discussion, my highest hope is that each participant will give something of his position and wind up with a fuller understanding of the subject and a greater common ground upon which to go forward. I'd rather learn something than win.
Celticfox (100 D(B))
28 Mar 13 UTC
@Krellin I didn't say you should. Where did I say you should? I'm suggesting other people unless you want to participate (not saying you do). I never placed blame since that belongs on both sides.

@Hecks Oh well I'll get it organized but I'll let each side pick a moderator to be fair.

So anyone interested?

Server upgrade
Thanks for everyone's patience during the server upgrade, for some reason it took them three hours, so it took much longer than I expected. I've added time to all games, if anyone spots anything out of place let me know.
On the bright side once this has settled down the server should have more capacity..

How does one leave a game?
I have no intentions of leaving any games I'm in, but I invited a friend to join the site and he joined a bunch of games, then decided he just didn't understand the game. Rather than stick around and ruin things for everyone, I've convinced him to just leave but I don't see that option anywhere. Help?

Why does anyone play live gunboat games?
Don't get me wrong, they're fun enjoyable things to do, even though I'm not too good in them myself, but, NMRs and CDs are rampant, and you get opportunistic wankers that refuse to draw/cancel even though everyone else has their draw/cancel votes up and game ettiqute demands that they do so, so I ask, why does anyone play them?

Repeat Messages?
Did the new updates come with a feature for preventing posting the same messages you already did? I posted the link to the email the mods about unpausing games, but I ended up having to add something to the beginning of the post, to get around a message that told me to make repeat messages.
Doesn't matter that much, but it seems like it could be annoying at times

Can someone explain the draw of the Gunboat?
To me, the entire thrill of this game is in the formation of alliances and the negotiations between players. With that being said, I absolutely don't understand the draw of the Gunboat games--it takes out the best part. If I'm looking for pure strategy, I'll take games like Axis and Allies (despite the "luck factor" or even chess). What am I missing about Gunboat games?
