@fortknox - the pool of mentors seemed to work well, so we'll go with that. it means you, IKE, and Babak are the mentors.

@The Big Doak - commentary professors provide public learning that can be used by both the students in the game and students who are following the game. mentor professors provide private learning to only the student players, so that they can ask questions about the game that are no appropriate for a public setting. questions for mentors from student players are to be asked by private message. questions by non-player students should be made in the commentary thread (still to be created) - and this gets you brownie points on your application for the next game.

are mentors supposed to take a proactive or reactive stance?

In other words, should I just make myself available or poke and prod a student from time to time to see how they are doing and if they have any questions?

I know I am nothing more than peanut gallery, but if you start on Monday, you should take into account that the Americans will be celebrating Thanksgiving the following Thursday and some of them may have limited access or time for the duration of the weekend.

fortknox - last game, I think it was more of a reactive thing... but in the EOG thread for game 5, someone suggested a more proactive approach, so i would not be opposed to trying to be more proactive - but just make sure you are careful with that specific vs general advice line.

Babak, it'd be more along the lines of "Hey, I'm a mentor, so if you have any questions, don't be afraid to message me" or "you're a couple years in the game. Just making myself available if you have any questions"

That's what I mean by active, not suggesting strategies or anything, just being available. I'm pretty good at either being vague or saying here's the pros/cons of this, and the pros/cons of the opposite, then let them decide what to do.

I'd prefer a help upon request situation personally. I'd also like to see a more general analysis of moves than we saw in the last game. I felt like players reacted too much to comments. I think a way to limit this would be appropriate as it's borderline meta-gaming.

C-K - what do you mean exactly? did you feel that the comments affect the in-game play? because personally, I didnt see that occur in an explicit way... but maybe I missed something.
