What's an Enemy?
I found that enemies are most enemies that aren't interested in the interests of other friends' enemies and most people are not people that I would make as an enemy because it takes a friend to make an Enemy with interests like those of your enemy. I always hang out with enemies but never with my enemies because our interests are the same.

So what's this thread anyway?

Why marriage at all?
I'm curious. Let's set aside the gay-marriage discussion and ask the question: why (if at all) does / should society *legally* recognize a relationship between two adults, encouraging it by granting it special legal status? What do you think are the reasons this has occurred so widely? Are they good reasons?

What's a friend?
I've found that some of the people that a lot of people would identify as my friends don't interest me and aren't that fun hanging out with for me while there's also one person in particular whom I'm always eager to help out and who is probably the first person I'd go to if I need advice/support/whatever, but I think we're both inclined not to call eachother friends.

So what's a friend anyway?

Seems like a pro map
As a nerd I look at old variants. Imagine this but with one exception: fleets can travel down rivers but armies can't cross rivers. I'm thinking about writing some programming and making this one into a variant (on a separate URL) but who here likes this map? looks like a good map for me.

NFL Pick 'em Week 11: The Playoff Push Kicks into High Gear
Well, sorry, we missed the Dolphins top the Bills...but there's still tine to pick the rest of the week! Among the early games, Bengals/Saints and 49ers/Giants are suddenly two games with four teams clawing at the edges of their playoff races, while in the afternoon, a trifecta of great games--Seahawks/Chiefs, Lions/Cardinals (with the #1 seed in the NFC on the line!) and Eagles/Packers. SNF? Brady vs. Luck and the Pats vs. the Colts! Week 11...it's getting important...pick 'em!

All Supports at a Glance

Especially in live games it's important to be able to see all supports fast. On the standard map of interface not all supports are indicated. Below the standard map you can open a large map, there you see all supports at a glance. Useful instrument, it shouldn't be neglected.

How about we make special threads for those who like 'violence' and 'abuse'?
It'd be places where, you know, krellin is allowed to live up to his true potential, and where he can share his love with YJ again through hateful remarks.. Because yes, some of us miss that.

So maybe we can get cut more slack in threads that use a specific thread designation (like *VULGAR*......*VULGAR), warning in OP not to open the thread if you're fainthearted, making clear all threats, hate remarks etc. will be jokes.. Wouldn't that work?

Need a sitter
I have 3 games, all FP, going at the moment. My primary source of contact (Blackberry) has been disabled and I won't be able to check in as often as needed. I really hate committing to something that I can't live up to, and that includes Dip games. I have no idea when I will have a new phone available to make playing more reasonable. So, I'm looking for a trustworthy soul to sit my account for a while whilst I acquire a new phone. PM me if interested.

Variant Alliance Names
I've recently become a tad curious about this. For the classic map, basically every alliance has some sort of name (as you all should be aware) from the Juggernaut to the Lepanto to the Western Triple and so on. I can't seem to find preexisting names for alliances for other maps, no matter how wonderful that alliance could potentially be. Have you all heard of any? Or else what names should there be for some of the alliances in the variants?

Oh..and for anybody looking to split their time, i recommend PlayDiplomacy. VDip is too similar to this site but PlayDip has a good balance of much better in some areas (cleaner interface, better forum, great players, cool variants) and not as good in others (community has dipped a bit, doesn't have some of the higher player variants, etc). Some features require pay, but it's pay-what-you want so looking at as low as $1 if you want. Perhaps is the difference between a profit vs non-profit site is what is making the hard feelings i tend to feel over here.

All joking aside, though, it's understandable that when a feature isn't working it's very frustrating for both the community and the staff that need to fix it. Obviously communication was a bit shoddy on both ends, but we all love GR and we all want it back, so there's really no need for hard feelings. We all know what's wrong now and that it's being worked on. If anyone, such as Mapu, have coding experience and are willing to donate time, I'm sure the mods would love to hear from you now that they are taking on more of a Dev role on the site.

Some of your posts here are terribly rude, gentleman. Alderian doesn't owe you an ETA. You're not paying him.

"How hard can it be?" Okay tough guy, so you do it. Get over yourselves. It's a free service. If you want better customer service, offer to pay the guy.

Pump the breaks Al, you're all you're doing is joining in on blowing this way out of proportion and trying to add fuel to a fire that doesn't need the fanning. Nobody wants a volunteers vs membership war here so can everybody stop trying to spin this that way.

The question got settled hours ago when it was stated anywhere up to six months, everything since then has just been unnecessary antagonization.

@ssoreen - It's no different then here, you need to seek out the high quality games if you want the reliability.

Guys, I know it's frustrating not to have GR available right away, and there's really no reason for anyone to get mad or upset here. It's an unfortunate situation, but we are working on it as quickly as we can. Once Kestas fixes the data dump, GR will be back on schedule and it'll be fine. Eventually, we will integrate GR into the site so that it's automatically done.

So, I think we all understand what the problem is and where it's at. Let's move on.

Wait, Zultar just said that GR is eventually going to be integrated into the site? I thought for years that the official stance was that that would never happen!

Also, the last time I asked VI where he got so good at Diplomacy, he sent me a link to the Lazarus Pit. Now, it turns out he started out on playdip, which means that playdip is the Lazarus Pit, and now he's recommending that others go there!

Not integrating GR into the site was Kestas's thing. I am about a new world order. I think GR is great; it's a much better ranking system than points. I was working with CSteinhardt with a new ranking system but it wasn't good enough to my satisfaction and it wasn't mathematically superior than GR.

In any event, the official stance now is that GR is good enough and will be integrated if possible.

Zultar, have you thought about integrating the same rating system as vdip? I know discussing the pitfalls of GR is a tired subject but this could be an opportune time to look into something different.
zultar (4180 DMod(P))
20 Oct 14 UTC
Yes, I have. I don't know how to do it, but if jmo or a_tin_can or oli can work with alderian and me to integrate it, that's how I would do it. There are lots of things that the mods and I want to integrate but they require a lot of work. We have an internal list of things to develop and integrate based on a number of feedbacks and threads that we have seen plus emails and PMs. The challenge is to write all codes, vetting them for problems, and so forth, but there is a lot of room for growth and improvement in my opinion.
Yonni (136 D(S))
20 Oct 14 UTC
As someone who is really unfamiliar with coding - how different is te code behind vdip and WebDip? Have they diverged a bunch?
jmo1121109 (3812 D)
20 Oct 14 UTC
They are similar enough that vdip can take our updates as Kestas and others make them and implement them, but it does take a significant amount of work on either end to adopt changes.
thdfrance (162 D)

Just for someone who doesn't know, how exactly do Ghost Rankings work? Like what is your performance based on if not points?
jmo1121109 (3812 D)
20 Oct 14 UTC
How you do in games, it takes into account the other players ghostrating and your expected performance in the game.

WAR isn't a great analogy, as GR isn't strictly speaking a counting stat. Park-adjusted wOBA would be more accurate, albeit still imperfect.

Eh, good point.
peterwiggin (15158 D)

So it sounds like Kestas losing interest/not having enough time means that, in the short term, we won't have updated GR for a few months, but that in the long term, it will be integrated into the site.

VI, I'm getting the feeling that you don't have my best interests in mind. What did I ever do? I thought you were my friend! :-(

Experimental Opening Games - Conclusions
Our games are finished and are cancelled (two are still in limbo, but they'll be cancelled soon enough). I archived the moves in a Google Doc, so if anyone is curious, check them out. There were a number of creative and successful openings, and while it's important to note that everyone was being a bit reckless, it's not hard to figure out what kind of position one might theoretically put themselves in in a more typical scenario with some of these openings.
