Morality
Here's a situation I ran across a few days ago and I wanted to know your guys opinions on whether it was immoral or not. remember, the question is not whether it's moral, but rather if it's immoral or neutral. And please explain why or why not. Read further:

Prove Yourself in World Gunboat
Hey guys, I'm loving the world diplomacy gunboat games I've been playing recently, and I'd like to get a good solid game going with high stakes for those interested. I started a game named same as this thread, and wanted to advertise the game here. I'm really hoping that the bannings that have happened recently in a few of the games I'm in have gotten rid of the cheaters, so that we can have a true anonymous gunboat game without any metagamers joining.

My shame.
Other than occasionally laughing at a fortress door joke. At pub trivia tonight I missed the first diplomacy question I've ever heard at a trivia night.

An elected European President
In another thread, I argued that the role of President of the European Council and the role of President of the European Commission (the EU's "government") should be merged and that this person should be elected by an EU-wide election.

Can anyone in Michigan explain the opposition to the new bridge?
From a Hoser's point of view, it seems like a no-brainer. Wondering if there's actually a reasonable explanation for the opposition. http://news.nationalpost.com/2012/10/23/greedy-u-s-billionaire-urges-michigan-voters-to-reject-free-bridge-to-canada/

No I mean. Deserts only exist in certain areas. The loss using wires from Egypt to england would be staggering.

Draug: I don't know anything about storage, but if it's only working half the time that's still better than what we're doing now with fossil fuels.... half the time.

@Gen. Lee: The lightning idea? It's this weird place called my mind. I don't need a website to conjure an idea believe it or not.

@Draug: You speak Science. I speak English. Translated: Yeah, you're probably right, but I would never know it. A pure vacuum is one with no resistant forces of any kind. If that's irrational, sorry. I think in extremes and narrow it down as I go.

Abge - the problem is in the DC back to AC. My nephew ia in the field and we actually just had this conversation when.we were watching Batman Returns and Christopher Walken's character has created a great big energy battery. His quote was "not in the next 20 years!"

Oh, I see... well it doesn't HAVE to be the desert, the Sahara doesn't actually get that much more direct sun Intensity (def. not an order of magnitude more) than England.

No I meant the carbon footprint thing but I was behind in the thread, I'm gonna google though.

No, a pure vacuum has no matter. Energy can still travel and magnetism and gravity still work in a pure vacuum.

Population centers are, unsurprisingly, far from deserts. HVDC lines can only go so far and if I remember my Power course correctly, they can't be used underwater because of capacitance issues.

bo_sox, philosophy is a great field. But to succeed in modern philosophy you're going to have to be just as precise and rigorous a thinker as a mathematician, and you're probably going to have to know a decent amount about science.

@Gen. Lee: Carbon footprint? That's easy… just google it and some site will take you through how to find it.

@Draug: Yeah, you're right. You go talk with your peeps and figure out how Maglev can work for me so that I don't have to fly in planes anymore. I'll sleep while you do all that batshit cray cray stuff. Thanks...
abgemacht (1076 D(G))

Yeah, Draug, the solid state switches are used invert the power. That's how we can have those massive HVDC transmission lines into Canada. They aren't great, but it really isn't the biggest limitation.

@YJ - The issue is that the majority of our power usage outside of summer comes to.drive heat at night and electric lights. These both occur afyer the sun goes down.

Semck, I'm 16. I have time. According to my college professor-turned high school teacher with a PhD and the most intellectual guy I've ever met, I'm fine for my age o_O

That doesn't guarantee me anything, I know.

He also mentikned the cost and space requirements for the capacitors. Even.if we went with the latest LiPoly, it is hyper expensive. And if we went with cheaper tech like NiCad or even LiIon, the batteries would be the size of a city innorder ot.ppwer a city over night.

Semck, Bo could still succeed as a philosopher if he settled for "theologian" instead. The same questions need answering without the rigor of peer or public review that philosophers undergo.

abgemacht (1076 D(G))

I don't think anyone is currently using capacitors for mass storage. It's all batteries and thermo or mechanical systems. Capacitors are amazing and will soon eliminate the need for all non-residential batteries.

I didn't know that Draug.... oh well, if I find the article maybe it addresses some of those concerns. I hadn't thought of the practical implications beyond the immediate efficiency.

@bo - So instead of making up your own imprecise definitions, strive to be at college level before your 17th birthday. Don't settle for good enough. Actually know about what you discuss. A vaccum, for instance, is the absolute absence of matter. If it didn't allow energy (especially light) to pass through, we would live on a cold dead rock. Or more to the point, life would never have been created.

A battery is a form.of capacitor.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
24 Oct 12 UTC
No it is not. A battery is a chemical storage device. A capacitor is a passive electrical component.
Draugnar (0 DX)
24 Oct 12 UTC
OK. Here I am going.on about being precise. I was always taught that anything with energy storage capacity was a capacitor. Guess I need to go take a.physocs refresher as well. Of course that was 30 years ago.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
24 Oct 12 UTC
No, a Capacitor is an extremely specific device that uses an electric field to store energy. They're one of the coolest things ever, after the transistor, of course.
Draugnar (0 DX)
24 Oct 12 UTC
I've often wondered if a Faraday Cahe couldn't be used to store energy somehow. I mean they stop radio signals from.getting in and out.
Draugnar (0 DX)
24 Oct 12 UTC
And I believe you. As I said, I went through physics 30 years ago and just high school.physics so precise terms weren't always as precise as they should have been.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
24 Oct 12 UTC
Maybe? The only thing I can think of is by having the waves heat the Cage and use it to make steam. Of course, you'd need to produce the EM wave, so I don't see how it could possibly be efficient.
Draugnar (0 DX)
24 Oct 12 UTC
No, I meant as part of a capacitive device. Something to.trap the energy inside. But then I guess getting.it back.out would require what you are talking about. Hmmm...

Suggestion
It's probably a dumb idea, but I'll propose it anyway. A "Repeat Last Turns' Orders" button would be useful when you have a lot of units, it is towards the end of the game, and you are simply support holding across the map for a couple of turns, waiting for a draw.

Mitt Romney: The 45th President
Polls and common sense are now showing that Romney will win. From the states that Obama carried in 2008, Romney has three: Indiana, North Carolina, Florida; completely locked up. He is ahead in Virginia, Colorado, and New Hampshire, and within the margin of error in Iowa, Wisconsin, Nevada, Pennsylvania. Meanwhile, all the states that went for the GOP in 2008 are Solid Romney. With 2 weeks left, Romney is in an increasingly strong position to take the White House.
