Please, please finalize orders in gunboats
I know this comes up occasionally on the forum, but I'll throw in my whiny two cents. Why make everyone wait 24 hours when you already know what you are doing with your three little units?

AMD vs. Intel
I personally prefer AMD. Great quality for a good price and the Bulldozer core is amazing. But there are those who prefer Intel. Discuss it in here.

But, to go from Windows-->Linux. My lab machine is Linux and that is a must. I know I can go from Windows-->Windows very easily. I do that all the time.

Yeah, D33 is a tool. A dull razor knife whose last blade got tossed and the screw is rusted shut so you can't reopen it and reload it. In other words, a useless tool. :-)
Diplomat33 (243 D(B))
22 Nov 11 UTC
Well, oil the tool and it works again.
Diplomat33 (243 D(B))
22 Nov 11 UTC
@ draugnar. You are a tool for the company you work for.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))

@Draug

For instance, right now, to connect from my windows laptop to my linux machine, I use an awful mix of PuTTY, WinSCP, and XWin32. When the planets are aligned, it mostly works, but it's a huge pain compared to just sshing from one box to another. Is there a good program I don't know about?
Diplomat33 (243 D(B))
22 Nov 11 UTC
Yeah. Called ditching Linux :-)
Draugnar (0 DX)

@Abgemacht - Well, you didn't say that! I was just saying that you shouldn't judge Window's development so harshly. If you are forced to use Linux at work, then yes, dual boot and have a linux partition for work-at-home.

Remember, I'm a web/business developer. Business runs on Windows and it is here to stay. So I run on Windows. Scientific development runs on the platform that gets bang for the buck. I've developer for what was once a super computer - a Silicon Graphics Iris Indigo - which had it's own proprietary OS. But you can't just say one OS is crap for development just because your *type* of development tends to work best on a different platform. If you want ultra high-speed calculations, go Linux. No doubt. If you want Rapid App Development woith a robust UI, go Windows. No other way around it.

@D33 - the difference is I am a finely honed tool, well maintained and current in my capabilites. Your razor knife has a broken spring, the slider is missing, and in general needs to be tossed and replaced with a newer model.

Yes, I support the transport of consciences out of our biological bodies and into electronic easily repairable ones. With many other benefits as well. I would do it.

And you get paid per use I get nothing.

@Draug

I believe this misunderstanding came about because we were talking vicariously through D33.

My point was never to imply that Windows was bad at development. I was merely trying to assert the fact that Windows is not the best choice for all things. I should have been clearer, but I was trying to be brief to help get my point across. Had you been in this conversation from the start, I would have been more careful with what I said, because I know you are a competent programmer, unlike D33.

Windows is a capable programming tool if used properly. I don't program for a living but know some.

'If you want ultra high-speed calculations, go Linux. No doubt. If you want Rapid App Development woith a robust UI, go Windows. No other way around it.'

Sums it up fairly nicely. Also, Linux @ home is fairly nice. I switched a few years ago, when I realized my 512 MB RAM and processor weren't good enough anymore, and I had heating issues. XP being an out-of-the-box honey ney didn't help either. I'm now on Ubuntu most of the time.

@abgemacht - Technically I had posted twice to this thread before you said that. But no biggie. Clarification accepted.

@D33 - What does "option explicit" do? What is polymorphism? What is a delegate? What is an interface? A static class, variable, or method?

Until you can answer these without google searching them, you may know "some", but I would call it knowing just a little. :-)

AMD is a "bang for your buck" company and will never really outperform Intel. They're not in the same league as Intel in production, research, money, or even employees. Don't get me wrong, AMD is great competition for Intel and has come close a few times, but not lately, and it doesn't appear like they will again.

I'm talking in a two year span. AMD always releases their product on Intel's gap year, allowing their product to barely best (sort of, and only in a few ways) what we already begin to consider Intel's older model.

I like AMD because they're light on the budget and didn't ruin ATI, but they're just not invested in "the future" like Intel is and frankly, are only around so Intel doesn't have to go to so many anti-trust hearings.
Diplomat33 (243 D(B))
23 Nov 11 UTC
Have you seen the Bulldozer from AMD? Look at that and tell me it is not good! 8 cores @3.6 GHZ for less than 300 dollars. You have to pay around 1000 for the i7 6 core that compared. And AMD has amazing graphics cards.

The new low power dual core Brazo Z-01 from AMD out benchmarks the equivalent Intel N-series tablet chips, Geo.

Yet another example of AMD excellence. Thanks Draugnar.

AMD is no longer the cheap follower and has become a leader in chip design.
