Calling someone a Jew can easily be conceived as racist. It's all in the tone. Hell, you can spout PC with enough venom and make it offensive. I doubt the original poster was influenced solely by South Park since he goes on to say some clearly anti-semitic things and not just the flippant remarks of someone using jew as a colloquial term.

the problem with South Park is that idiots watch it who don't get that Cartman is a parody of bigoted people. You really should need a certificate that says you understand the surprisingly profound social commentary in an episode of South Park to be allowed to watch it.

You are so right, Invictus. And parents who let their children watch it and equate it with The Simpsons just don't get it. The Simpson's are pre-teen and teen comedy combined with some adult satire. South Park is pure social commentary and definitely for the "mature" crowd only.

For real though, I don't think little kids should watch Simpsons either. I did, but I also like to think I grew up in an emotionally and intellectually healthy household, so I could tell the difference between role models and cartoons. Unfortunately a lot of kids don't have that luxury.

Yeah, but "eat my shorts" and Bart calling his dad "Homer" are way different than songs like "Your a Crazy Unlce F-er, Unlce F-er!" or the racist and bigoted crap that spews from Cartman. Adults who watch it and find humor in it generally get that it is satire attacking all aspects of society ("Come out of the closet, Tom Cruise!"), whether it be right-winged (via Cartman), left-winged (Stan's dad), or extreme Jewish and/or Christian views, nothing is safe, which makes it a valid satire. They don't take a consistent side except to say "look how foolish ALL of you are." and I like that. Unfortunately, there are some idiots who just watch it for the potty-mouthed humor and others who hate it for the potty-mouthed humor and don't see the satirical value.

You have to distinguish between friendly banter against a country you're at war with and direct personal attacks against a player of a racist/religious/sexist/specist kind. The former is fine. The latter should get a player banned. If you did that in the UK you could easily end up fired, fined, imprisoned or all 3 (unless you're a Royal of course).

Not all insults are racist; not all insults are undeserved and, I'm sure you'd all agree, nothing about a persons race, sex, colour or creed stops them being a small minded little git.

In addition to the Speaker's comment, not all 'racist' language is racist 100% of the time. It depends on context and whether anyone within earshot is actually going to be offended (mostly I'm responding to the Royals comment here).
I doubt the 'jew over to italy' comment was *meant* to be offensive, it just happened to be a really, really, really ignorant comment. 'I will destroy you, jew,' however, really was meant, though :S

@trim - I agree. some people actually equate almost any insult to racism. That's how diluted the term has become and I've commented on this many times here. Someone said something that at best could have been considered "Americancentric" like something from an american point of view - perhaps a little ignorant of other peoples' viewpoints - and someone responded with the racist accusation.

So no - saying "damn Jew" or "stupid Muslim" or "Christian Idiot" - none of those are racist. They may be offensive, bigotted, and discriminatory ... but not refering to a race, they cannot be racist.

Actually, Jew is both race and religion. Muslim is only a religion (although predominantly Arab) as Christian is purely religious. But being born Jewish generally means being from the bloodline of one of the tribes of ancient Israel.

Racism is in the connotations of the word. The tone in which you can say the word "Jew" can be said with a venom that connotes that being Jewish is inherently bad or inferior and is worth calling to attention in a mocking or demeaning manner. I would call that racism.

South Park is so good. I wish people could see past the crudeness and realize that most of the humour in South Park is very high brow, albeit ironically hidden behind the low brow. eg. When the parents of South Park turn to atheism and at the same time start eating with their ass and shitting out their mouths.

Also I very much respect Matt and Trey for spreading the criticism gratuitously around, not even missing themselves. Such as when a character says that he loves Family Guy because it makes him laugh and at least it doesn't get all preachy and up it's own ass with messages. =)

I was going to mention that Jews are a race and not simply Judaism. It's worth noting, also, that Jews have famously be persecuted across the centuries.

I would tend to argue that the term 'Jewish' does not equate to being of a certain race. My friend, who claims to be '1/8 Jew,' disagrees. You *can* argue it both ways, but, the way I see it, having a go at someone for being Jewish is not racism. It is bloody offensive, though!

I am an atheist Jew. I have no religion, but my ancestors have have been solely eastern European (Ashkenazic) Jews. Whether by their choice or by the laws in place in the lands they lived (Russia, Poland, etc), they did not interbreed with the local ethnic populations and remained a distinct culture, ethnic background, or, as some would say, race. As we cannot agree on definitions for those terms, its not worth arguing about, but it is certainly more than just a religion.

They had their own religion (Judaism), language (Yiddish), culture, foods, dances, songs, oral traditions, etc.
