Bug Report
In game Go Chargers (http://www.phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=2973) I (Germany) was unable to place units last fall, even though I've got 14 supply depots and only 13 units... anyone know why this might be?

Bug in support move orders?
I cannot upload the third field of any support move orders in http://www.phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=2879.
I submit the filled fields, they stay pink and never turn white, while my browser hangs on. Has anybody else experienced such a problem?
Thanks for your attention.

Tournament Update
It's been a while since anything's been said about the Grand Festive Diplomacy Tournament in the forum, so I thought I'd give an update.

We're in the midst of round 2. We seem to have lost two players to CD and one player only joined one of his games, but otherwise things have been going smoothly. A few of the games seem to be nearing completion, but there are still a few very interesting games going on. If you're interested in checking them out, visit the official tournament page at: http://www.llamanation.org/grandfestivediplomacytournament2007. That will have as up-to-date information on the tournament as I've written anywhere.

If the links tell you you're not a member of the game and don't show you the map, remove the www. from the game url's and they should work, thanks to an interesting quirk of phpdip.

I'll post updates in this thread as games complete and once the players moving on to the finals have been decided.

New Turn Length
Are the 48-hour turn lengths intentional? I can get used to it I'm just wondering.

In my games everything is running smoothly and I am very appreciative of supporting convoys and no self-displacement. However I am curious as to how the map will replace Game Master tab. Anyway I'm sure that will resolve itself, my main question is about the new turn lengths. I hadn't heard Kestas mention that so I'm curious.

Public Apology to all players affected by my meta gaming before.
Dear Kestas and all phpDiplomacy players,

I am here to apologise and say sorry to all players affected by my meta gamings before. Sorry for all inconveniences and unpleasure caused.

In order to show my sincere repentance, I will stop playing all the acounts.

I will start a new account, try to avoid playing with my classmates, or play with them in password games,
to enjoy the pleasure brought by this wonderful game with all phpDiplomacy players.

I hope that everyone will forgive me and let me repent, change and start over in this game again.

Hope that you will accept my public apology.

Thank you for all your attentions.

(Forgive me that my English sucks too:))

Suggestions for Kestas
Countries in CD should defend themselves. Units that can should hold support each other.

In the fall, countries without SCs, that cannot retreat into an open SC, should not be asked to retreat and disband. Too many players don't finalize those steps. The remaining players get to wait 48 hours.

Replying to people who always accuse, me, timchau, happyklim or other players in my class.
Let me explain to you guys about me and the players in my class first:

I am from Hong Kong, China.

I am in F.3, i.e. grade 9

My classmates playing phpDiplomacy include:

1. myself

2. saradomian

3. Gobbledydook

4. Chairman Mao

5. kn2005

6. timchau

7. happyklim

8. jasperleeabc

9.galaxypheonix

We are in the same class, and gobbledydook introduces this game to me. Soon, many of my classmates join, and we also like playing together. Playing in the the same game is not forbidden.

So I sincerely hope that you guys will stop making up things like we all are meta gaming.

Replying to sean:

Sometimes our classmate dosen't have enough points or don't want to play such low pot games. Also, some of us don't have too much time to play so many games. So, if we want to play private games, we would rather play the game on paper during the lesson... or free time :D

I hope this will answer all the questions to all of us.

well improvement is realtive. yes it's better now than 100 years ago, but what about 1000 years before that? 1000 before that? etc. The Left is a general term and can roughly describe all socialist leanings (from social democrats and liberals to Maoists and Stalinists) which wish to re-socialize “the masses” into a more “progressive” agenda, often using coercive and manipulative approaches in order to create a false “unity” or the creation of political parties. While the methods or extremes in implementation may differ, the overall push is the same: the institution of a collectivized and monolithic world-view based on morality. I say it again, the left has failed. and we dont have a true democracy
Pandora (100 D)
29 Feb 08 UTC
oh and I hate "radical leftists" The Left is not radical and really never was. Its adherents challenge none of the underlying givens of this rotten, massified anti-life world. On the contrary, the Left--including the anarchist Left--defends them all. What leftists do oppose is a qualitatively different vision, in the direction of decentralized, face-to-face, small-scale community where individual responsibility makes division of labor and domination obsolete, and human anarchy is part of nature.
Brutorix (100 D)
29 Feb 08 UTC
I disagree with you Pandora as well - extreme left-wing governments have failed as you have said (Stalin/Mao/Teto...) but so has the extreme right (Hitler/Mussolini/Louis XIV/Napoleon...). The only reason why you can say the left has failed is because it failed in more recent history, 30-40 years ago there would have been many more people saying "The right has failed"

In post-modern politics though the people do have a left and right. The left being which ever group makes decisions closer to the representativs of the people on Louis XIV's left and the right being those closer to the aristocrats on his right. Both terms are relative and the difference between the groups is much larger in some countries and in others much smaller.

On Democracy though, although it doesn't neccessarily run as it was meant to, it still does give society more balance than the extreme right under the Fascists and the Nazis. The multiple party system makes decisions slower and forces them to be planned more carefully. It doesn't always work but it does improve from the Aristocracies/Dictatorships of the past.

sean: i originally figured this to be too serious a topic for me to delve into beyond some passing humor, but since you called me out... :)

i don't exactly have well thought out ideas about politics, but i tend to agree with leftward leaning policies (social programs; state sponsored/universal healthcare; the right to choose; gay marriage; anti-imperialism; some, but not excessive, amount of affirmative action; etc), while being an otherwise somewhat conservative kind of guy. i believe the world would be a much better place if people were simply nicer to each other. and if two people or peoples just couldn't find it in themselves to be nice to each other, to peacefully just find separate corners of the world to leave each other the hell alone in.

Pandora, you really seem to hate 'left.' what is 'left' to you? you say things are described roughly by it, but never define what 'left' is.

Also, assuming there are no places to go to avoid society, why does it necessarily follow that it has to be destroyed? There are no places where you can avoid being you, should you then kill yourself? and assuming that you intended that more broadly, like 'there is no place where you can go to be free from society,'
the same argument holds. you cant go anywhere to be free of yourself, so is suicide necessary?
I dont think your right there. there are plenty of places you can go to avoid society, but they just arent very pleasant and good luck on finding a regular meal or, for that matter, having time to worry about avoiding society because you will spend all your time looking for food and shelter. And that's why we specialize labor. If you are wondering where im talking about, try antartica, or perhaps some of the vast deserts on the planet.
Even a lot of mountain ranges are relatively uninhabited.
Brutorix (100 D)
29 Feb 08 UTC
Come on now, its been statistically proven that 84% of suicides in the western world could have been prevented by adequate news coverage of those who live 5x more depressing lives than they do. This is what we should be fighting for.

On the destruction of the individual, it really is different with every case (... starting with that I realize that the individual can't have been destroyed! Yipee!). The truth is that ultimately when it comes to individualism you choose where you fall, you define yourself based on what you percieve to be normal and right - this is more or less determined by your development in infancy while observing others. If you look at the literature from different time periods though a normal pleb nowadays is worth more and actually has the ability to be an individual. Whereas until our post-rennaisance world (where the majority of people are literate and partially educated) the only people who did have that were the aristocrats and upper-middle-class.

Hey Stoni, I am anti-asbestos as well. We should all unite against the common enemy and crush all the possible supporters of asbestos.

you think I hate the left? you should hear what I think of the right. anyway, society needs to be destroyed because it has failed. read my fucking declaration above, that basically explains it. and I cant just go live in the mountains. I havnt the survival skills (learning). because of our civilization, many adults are deprived of survival skills that a six year old hunter-gatherer would know. Cant you see? humans have been domesticated. the rise of civilization has only lead to social stratification, specilization, and general unhappiness.

There is no direct proof that we are unhappier now than we were 200 years ago, or 1200 years ago, or 12,000 years ago. In fact if you want to make conclusions based on more indirect means we actually are happier.

For example, we no longer go on crusades. Most people don't start revolutions. The prominence of religion is much dimmer than it used to be.

was bit disturbed by this but
pandora: "war murder and poverty dont bother me. "
also you got stuck into stoni for being "anti-Corporational"
whats wrong with that? now i know you aren't going to wax lyrical about the benefits of our managerial capitalist system so what is really your problem with that statement? in your mind he doesn't go far enough? you think he is blaming the symptom not the source?
Pandora (100 D)

to quote fictional literature "We're consumers. We are by-products of a lifestyle obsession. Murder, crime, poverty, these things don't concern me. What concerns me are celebrity magazines, television with 500 channels, some guy's name on my underwear. Rogaine, Viagra, Olestra. And martha stewart."

brutorix, to your post from earlier, I was not defending the right. the right is so obviously wrong I didnt think I had to say anything about it. as for the anti corporational thing, I thought my analogy capturted my feelings. being anti corporational is like being anti asbestos, or anti malaria, everyone should be against it, and for him to say he was anti corporational, well that wasnt really saying anything at all.
to brutorix immediatlu above
happiness is a relative term perhaps, but since egalitarianism has declined and social stratification has risen, along with many other unpleasent things, I just assumed the general level of happiness would go down. and if you're the kind of person whose happiness can be bought then there is no hope for you. and I didnt mean before this decade or century or millenium. I didnt mean before cars or computers, I meant BEFORE. like way before. say like before agriculture. crusades and revolutions are relativly new to human history

For whomever said the destruction of the individual is almost complete: The rising tide of individualism is seemingly unstoppable, though there may be a few temporary hampers, the general attitude in western society today trends stongly toward individualism. Not saying I think this is good or beneficial, in fact I believe this idea of individuals as more important than society as a whole seems irresponsibly selfish to me. The less people care about themselves and the more they care about the race as a whole, the better things will get. Problem is, no one will do this unprompted, as evidenced by the prevalence of individualism I referenced earlier. The almost holy way we say "individual rights" and "freedom of expression" among other things, is a lot of bunk. The less of those you have, the better. Sure some people will get shafted in the process, but not the majority. It's a sign of maturity for those who are getting the short end of the stick to keep their mouth shut and let the general population benefit instead. For instance: when Gen X is picking up the tab for today's baby boomers' social security, however unfair it is to them, they should just shut up about it and pay the bills. Not that I am Gen X. This is an example. People get shafted. Try to fix it, but if the cost outweighs the benefit, then put the minority's interests on the back burner. I believe this firmly, even when it's against what I want. So give the central government as much power as possible, within democratic limits, and follow "tyranny of the majority" to its furthest extent.

hehe, theo, i hope the calluses on your knuckles don't interfere with your typing :P

actually queer people are up front about enjoying sex. and if you're up front about it, you probably have more, with more people. which means more babies. if anything the traditional notion of marriage holds back the species by limiting the spreading of the seed. this is pretty blindingly obvious.

of course, nobody holds the secret to the purpose of this life, this reality. to assert that anybody has it figured out defeats the purpose of actually living. if we knew, we could just get rid of the nasty business of actual living beings and create a simulation that would do the trick much more efficiently. and the idea that the only purpose is procreation is pretty ridiculous enough to not warrant direct refutation.

on the merit, queer marriages mean, directly, more partners = more people, meeting your criteria. and further, more partners, more sex = more happines = greater likelihood of future procreation.

plus, most available psychosexual research finds that women prefer caring & feminine characteristics in their male partners. which compliments nicely the pretty well observed phenomenon that given the choice, women will spend their time with queer men rather than straight men.

taken together, in other words, queer marriages are a slam dunk :P

Anti-Corporation is not a given... it is nothing like anti- asbestos. Not everyone follows the ideology that corporations are necessarily bad.

Individualism in the Western world is massively on the rise, it is nowhere near destruction. With all the resentment towards communism and fascism in recent history, it's no wonder. There's a strong shift towards values of critical thinking and individuality, and most new values support this idea, such as Ayn Rand's objectivist philosophies and the growing population of individualist atheists.

In a world dominated by mass media and advertisements, critical thinking is more important than ever, acting as an immune system against the massive amounts of information available, and the very fecund viruses of the mind.

Happiness has been shown to be very biological. The human machine is very capable of generating synthetic happiness even in brutal circumstances. The average level of "happiness" is probably the more or less the same level it has been for millennia. A year after one person becomes a paraplegic, and another wins the lottery, they will be approximately just as happy as the other. We live relatively day by day.

While I must admit some admiration for the concept of returning to hunter gathering lifestyles, I personally believe that civilization, society, and specialization are beneficial. I greatly disagree with many aspects of our modern society, such as the omnipresent medium, but I believe that these problems should be overcome; we should not give up and return to the time where we did not have this problem, that's a cop out.

In general, humanity is restricted only by it's ingenuity and the available useful energy. The general trend of progress is in the increased energy that we are able to harness. Agriculture, and specialization greatly increases the energy available as well as the efficiency with which we use it. As our energy output increases, so do our capabilities and our freedoms; we can choose what we wish to do, and are bound only by our ethical merit.

While I very much enjoy evolutionary theory, and apply it's models to many different situations, social Darwinism is a poor application. Shame on all who attempt to justify the sacrifice of our people in the name of evolutionary "progress" and eugenics. If there is anything that makes humans special (if that is needed to satisfy our ego), then it is our ability to deny the chains of our nature, our evolution, and create our own environment. We may change our environment, rather than the opposite. Nature's done a fine job so far, but our greatest minds will do far finer.

I concur with Chrispminis in that eugenics is not the best method to further our evolution. Genetic engineering. It would effectively eliminate the capability of racism, as gene pools (aka races) would become irrelevent, if not eliminated entirely. Again, as Nietzche so aptly put it, our highest and strongest instinct is the "will to power." It is at the core of every living thing to survive, and, if possible, to dominate. Through the injection of certain chemicals into the bloodstream, we could, effectively control our own emotions, and, ultimately, our actions. We ought, therefore, to divide humanity into three classes: man type "A", man type "B", and man type "C". Man type "C" is man as he is today. Man type "B" would be those in whom genetic engineering has perfected their capability to fight, and eliminated their "Will to Power." Man type "A" would be those in whom the "Will to Power" has been raised by an extreme degree. There would be three possible punishments for infractions of the law: Slavery, Death, and Experimentation. Violations of the law would only be counted as infractions the second time they occur: the first time you would be injected with chemicals to eliminate your desire to do such things. If you resist the "re-educational" process, you will be subjected to one of the aforementioned punishments. Man type "A" would rule, to get back to our idea of three men above. Ideally, there would only ever be one of these at one time. Otherwise, the two would inevitably fall into conflict and destroy the world in their attempts to ensure that the other did not get it. Man type "B", with their wills having been eliminated, would enforce the rule of "A". "C" will do as they are told if they know what is good for them. And they will; we will make it very clear to them. In addition to fear, we would use any other means necessary to maintain order.

In my defense for the idea that being homosexual is something to be cured of:

I never said anything about it being genetic in nature: it is not. The scientific community has proved this to my satisfaction. It is fairly obvious, however, that it involves a change of chemistry in the brain. We now have the capability to fix this problem through the destruction of certain glands, as well as the injection of other chemicals producing the opposite effects. As far as a population problem goes: We're not having one! It is true that in a good many third-world countries there are more people than the food supply can support. But, here in the U.S. we produce hundreds of times as much food as we need. In order to accelerate the evolution of the species, we need as many people as possible, so we can try as many different mutation combinations as possible. We therefore need to have EVERYONE reproduce. If they ("queers") resist the new brain chemistry, they ought to be eliminated as a waste of resources. As far as your psychosexual data goes, Freud was stupid. As your "psychologists" were, no doubt, followers of his, they are stupid too. The ancients have a great deal to teach us regarding this matter. They established the rite of marriage because it meant that the species produced too slowly to cause population problems but quickly enough that the "tribe" would swiftly increase in numbers. In addition, if you will compare the modern situation in the West with the situation in circa A.D. 200 Rome, you will find that, aside from the obvious technological differences, the characteristics of the two civilizations remarkably similar. Indeed, one might say identical. What happened to Rome by the end of that century? Its power was broken. To be sure, there was a true "Roman" on the Imperial Throne until 476, but brittany, much of north africa, the British Isles by the end of the 3rd century paid allegiance to Rome in word only, and most of the rest of the Empire was not doing as it ought.

To answer the last paragraph of Chrispminis' post, "If there is anything that makes humans special (if that is needed to satisfy our ego)," Humanity is special. Mathematically the probability of any complex life forms (that is to say, higher order than bacteria or protists) arising on any other planet in any other system in any other galaxy is, quite literally, one over infinity. In other words, zero. We are quite certain that we are the only species on our planet which is "self-conscious." that is to say, we do not act purely because of external stimuli. In addition, we have the vital asset of adaptability. When the early men came into the northern latitudes, it was, no doubt, too cold for them. But instead of, as any other creature would have done, evolving a fur coat, this man killed a bear and borrowed his coat.

p.s. I really enjoy arguing, so just because I'm arguing a point, doesn't mean I believe in it.

ha - freud is essential. the discovery & articulation of the unconscious is the defining discovery of the modern era. any philosophy, any politics, any ethics, that avoids - or in your case, rejects - this discovery, is built on a house of sand.
