Nation Simulator- MkII
It is that time again - to see how the citizens of webDip would run a country. Let's plan on starting after the Mafia game, but we can get our ducks in a row now. We will need a volunteer(s) to help run the show. This could take some amount of knowledge and dedication, as well as an unbiased nature. Please respond if you are interested in helping or participating.

What was the rule of three again? Sorry, I don't remember that rule.

@teacon, have you read over any of the previous games of Mafia on the site?
reedeer1 (100 D)
21 Mar 16 UTC
OMGUS basically is when: player 1 votes player 2. player two then immediately votes player 1 for the reason that player 1 voted for him... this is not very helpful to town and so suspicion is brought on the OMGUS member.
xorxes (31128 D)
21 Mar 16 UTC
If I remember correctly the rule of three was that the third person to join a wagon is the most likely to be scum.
reedeer1 (100 D)
21 Mar 16 UTC
@Xorsex yes the rule of three was me, and i do plan on pursuing it, but it seems that brainybob is doing that too.
ND (879 D)
21 Mar 16 UTC
Thanks for the clarification, but is that rule based on any statistics from the webdip games played on this site, or any other site that does mafia forum games? Is it based on any quantitative data?

@reeder / jamie - thanks!
@xorxes I've read a bunch of the last game, but probably won't time to go read all the old ones. It seems there will be plenty to read here.

@teacon, the reason I ask is that OMGUS and WIFOM are explained (or misexplained) in every single game, so it seemed a bit odd that you needed to ask about them if you have read any past game. Also, I think you were the first one to mention WIFOM in this game.
krellin (80 DX)
21 Mar 16 UTC
Sigh....and so it begins. Since the first day is now going to be filled with a bunch of psychics and mind-readers, coupled with wanna-be English majors who think every misspelled wUrd is either a sign of guilt, or a hidden message, I"m declaring now that I shall refrain from my usual ass-blathery. I"m just too tired for the impending idioIcy.

Anyway -- I welcome you all. You shall love me and fear me.
ghug (5068 D(B))
21 Mar 16 UTC
WIFOM is Wine In Front Of Me, which will make sense to you if you've ever seen The Princess Bride. Basically it's used to describe scenarios where there are are two equally likely scenarios that suggest each other (e.g. The mafia killed ghug because he suspected them. But maybe they killed him so we'd think he suspected them. But maybe they killed him so we'd think they killed him so we'd think he suspected them. etc.).

I'm gonna ##VOTE Jamie. His reaction to the HR "wagon" struck me as insincere given that at least me and brainbomb were clearly jokevoting.

I don't particularly like y2k's reaction to brainbomb, but I do think the HR vote itself was a reaction test that worked, so I prefer Jamie right now.

"OMGUS basically is when: player 1 votes player 2. player two then immediately votes player 1 for the reason that player 1 voted for him... this is not very helpful to town and so suspicion is brought on the OMGUS member. "

TOTAL BULLSHIT. The idea that I can't vote for someone specifically because they vote for me is idiocy, especially since *I* know who I am, and therefor am essentially the soul judge of whether or not the vote has any validity.

Further, in the last game I worked my ass off to provoke mafia to vote for me -- I tried to get them to vote for me "because I'm krellin", and not because I actually did anything anti-town. In other words, my behavior was intended to CAUSE A VOTE to be a scum-move, because voting for someone without actual anit-town evidence in and of itself WAS anti-town.

So....FUCK this shit that OMGUS is automatically anti-town behavior. Sometime OMGUS is exactly and specifically town behavior.

Essentially what this says is that, as long as the mafia votes for a townie first, the mafia is thereby protected from having a vote cast against him by his victim for the remainder of the day. That is idiocy and bullshit.

I don't buy.

And while we are at it, the idioitic Day 1 vote which cannot be stopped, which pretty much ALWAYS kills a townie and has a slim to no chance of gaining us any real information....well, I'm against it, as I have stated in past games.

That being said -- it can't be stopped, so I will vote for someone. I will hold my nose and do my best....but I do it absolutely under protest.

"Wow Ghug that's some Grade A detective work right there. I confess everything."

Oooh, overly dismissive and standoffish response to a little heat. I'm liking this. Jamie, when you first posted, what did you think specifically was the motivation behind the three votes for HR? Did you think they were serious? Did you think it was the mafia trying to get HR lynched? Did you think it suggested that all three of us were scummy, only some of us, or none of us?

Krellin is right that OMGUS is not inherently scummy. A townie looks at a vote on himself and sees someone being wrong about the one piece of information he actually knows. It makes sense for suspicion to grow a little. What's important is that reasoning exists beyond that, even if it's as simple as "the way he accused me was suspicious". If there isn't any reasoning, it's a problem.
krellin (80 DX)
21 Mar 16 UTC
@ghug - Yes - townie knows the rationale for a vote against him is flawed and therefore will "OMGUS"....now, he therefore calls the scum-loving shit out for his bogus vote and places a vote on him properly because he knows the scum-move is bad for the town.

That is why *every* vote should be accompanied with the actual reason for the vote, so that the person voted for has the ability to directly confront his accuser.

The REFUSAL to provide an explanation for a vote is pure scum, and it is what allowed scum to hide when they are not called out on it.
ND (879 D)
21 Mar 16 UTC
Ok, so the Page 1 HR votes: Brainbomb, Ghug, Y2k.

It happened quickly and in rapid succession and does look a little weird, but I will say that a page 1 vote with little to no explanation is a lot different than a page 15 or page 30 or page 50, etc vote without any reason.

Page 1 can be used to gauge reactions and rxn. It's less weird than if something like that occurred mid-late game.

Anyone else think that Chaqa post was pure unadulterated crap? Claim VT because of that role assignment, declare that you will lurk for the rest of the game? And post that a whole one minute into the game? If you're VT, why the rush to be the first to post and invent an excuse for not being around? Lurk in the afterlife, pal.

OB he does this every game...
Good Morning Mushroom Kingdom!
It seems I'm a little late to the party (cause reasons). Anyway, before I delve into the little interaction we have so far. Allow me to share a little thing I put together when I realized that there is a good number of novices and second timers in this game, and at least some of them are probably VTs. As such I give you the following:

"Hey guys, Vash here. As a VT main, I feel I may as well reveal how I play as one (using this strategy YMMV, after all, different strategies work for different people anyway, let’s get into this.)

RULE 1: Don’t be afraid to die.
One thing that VTs should try to avoid is fearing death in the game. From the town perspective, it is a battle of attrition, and fortunately, it doesn’t matter if you are among the fallen or the living, just that the mafia die. As such, do not be afraid of the lynch or the NK, do not simply let it happen (it is still better for the mafia to die), but try not to be overly defensive when you are on the block. State your case, and search for scum. And if you get NK’d, consider it an honor, it means you were either a town leader or close to the trail of the mafia.
Rule 1.a: Don’t lurk.
Sure you may be busy from time to time. Your post count may suffer as a result, this is okay, but try not to make a habit of it. If you start looking you can’t affect the lynch aside from a vote and are unable to truly voice your concerns. As such, post and be productive. If you lurk, I will lynch you ad it is a way for mafia to fly under the radar.
Rule 1.b: Don’t Spam
There can be too much of a good thing. And while posting is good, it’s horrible if you actually post too much. Sure sometimes you like to get your thoughts out there, but when you clog up the thread with your ideas people are bound to dismiss your opinion and you can actually work against getting your top scumread lynched. As such, spamming has been a good way for mafia to hide. I.e if you spam, I will lynch you.

Rule 2: Be organized
The best way to convince people of your case is to be very organized with your posts as it makes it easier for people to follow the logical flow of your mind, and if they can do that, they should also be able to follow this to your conclusion. After all, mafia really like to make the town fall into a pool of chaos and despair, and being organized is the best way to combat this.

Rule 3: Be Objective
Look, I know, it can be hard when you are under pressure to be completely objective, but try to be clear of mind. For when you stop being objective it leads to things like tunnelling, and OMGUSing. These often keep you from putting together the puzzle and simply allow the mafia to manipulate you. Petty grievances are no reason to vote for someone. Overall, try and separate yourself from the game and look at it from the big picture. After all, a lot of things are obviously when you step back and ask, “why did this happen?”

Rule 4: If you can’t lynch mafia. Lynch bad town.
So this is probably the most controversial rule as it implies lynching town is a good thing. This is not what I am saying. What I am saying is if there is are two people on the block, and you think neither are scum (your scum reads just can’t get up for lynch at the time being) then you should think of who is a worse loss for the town. Because at the end of the day, if you lynch bad town, you minimize the negative impact on the town, and possibly allow everyone else to be able to think clearly or not be polluted by people leading the town astray (of course this factor is mostly subjective I guess). Bad town includes (but is not limited to): unexcused lurking, spamming, dismissing cases, not providing ANY reasons for reads/votes, etc….

Rule 5: NK Analysis and Meta Matters
Look, everything in mafia happens for a reason. The mafia don’t kill randomly, as some people just are more valuable targets. As such, when someone dies, or some abilities are used, you must ask, “Why?”. After all the key to any murder is motive, sure there may be multiple, in that case, find the most likely option and work from that. Also, if you have info (not personal info but playstyle info) on another player in the game. Use it, sure people change, but there will always be similar threads between playstyles for people, even if certain aspects do. As such a good starting point (But not lynchpin) in any mafia investigation is “is this person playing like they usually do as x”.

Rule 6: Be Civil and Have Fun
This is a major undertone of this entire post but, no matter how much you dislike someone, no matter how wrong you think someone is, be civil about it. Try not to dismiss people and work with what they give you (and hopefully they will try their best to help to be clear in their statements). After all, this is a game. It’s meant to be fun (if challenging) and bring us together as a community. So try and have a fun time, and don’t be a dick.

Hopefully this is helpful to any new (and maybe some veteran players)
Now let’s catch some scum."

Anyway, it seems that as always, the beginning of Day 1 is a bit chaotic. We have bb and Jamiet continuing their little feud, a bunch of joke votes for HR on page 1 (literally I don't think we've ever caught scum using page 1 in any capacity so whatever) and krellin actually being coherent and useful (I still disagree with him, but it seems to be a step in the right direction, even if it's just my perception of change and the content being mostly the same). Anyway, not much to gleen from this, yet. Anyway, what shall we talk about now? PR strategy?
