New game feature possible?
Is it possible to add a feature which sets an upper and lower limit on the points a player must have to join the game?

I would love to get your thoughts on possible variants:
(a) Standard game but with a fleet in Rome;
(b) Wildcard variant - once the countries have been distributed, each player can elect to build either a fleet or an army on any domestic coastal territory (and in the case of Saint-Petersburg can elect on which coast to build a fleet).

Introducing friends to the game
Hello all. Long time no see. I'm looking to introduce three of my friends to the game and am looking for three reliable friendly players to help in their first game. I have prepped them on the site rules. The game will be not anonymous ( I think this is easier when learning) and will be 36 hour phases starting next week. Post if interested. Thanks

Bernie Sanders is running for President of the United States
Any idea on how I could get a job working for his campaign?

Necroing this thread somewhat, it's easy to sign up to his campaign if you live in the USA. However, for those of us who wish to support him but don't live in the USA, it's a lot harder (as we don't have the required Zip code). Does anyone know a way to get involved?

Why should foreigners get involved in another nations elections?

Mendax if you are a US citizen then contacting your nearest US embassy or military installation is likely a start. In the case of installations I know that foreign locations usually have small (albeit important) campaign groups which campaign within the base. It is not only a way to help his campaign but also to help US soldiers stay in touch with home.
mendax (321 D)

I am not a US citizen, but I believe that a Sanders presidency would be good for the world and thus want to support it as much as I can.

A Sanders presidency would be interesting though, and if he garnered enough money to be somewhat influential this election, then I'd be happy if he was able to push the mainstream candidates into discussing oft-overlooked difficult questions.

Interesting, mendax. Wouldn't it be best to bring his ideas to British politics, then?

His brother is running for the Green party here, for example, so that is already happening.
steephie22 (182 D(S))

Maybe you're better off supporting his brother's campaign then, if he seeks to achieve the same things?

As long as the US keeps asserting its power and politics in other nations, other nations are free to support and campaign in ours as far as I'm concerned. We make ourselves a global country.

Ask his campaign guys what you can do for them, then?

Has anyone stopped to consider that maybe "democratic socialism" isn't a very good idea if we're talking about the United States?
phil_a_s (0 DX)

Gunfighter, what's so special about the US that socialism can't possibly work there? Or is it democracy that can't work? Or the combination? There is no reason socialism would be incompatible with the US, countries in similar economic situations have made similar transitions before. The combination has also worked before. Why wouldn't it?

Or it's a sign of how stupidly hyped up Hillary has been. There are some sound alternatives (Jim Webb, anyone?) that are moderate enough to garner support from both sides, whereas Hillary is so similar to Obama that we know she won't get a thing done.
mendax (321 D)
09 May 15 UTC
You don't need support from both sides. You don't need, and shouldn't be seeking, support from racist arsehats.
Yaleunc (11052 D(B))

True, but she will pander to the Al Sharpton crowd anyway Mendax.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))

I don't think you need support from both sides but it sure wouldn't hurt anything right now.

"...whereas Hillary is so similar to Obama that we know she won't get a thing done."

So you're saying Obama hasn't gotten anything done?

If you think that the "Al Sharpton crowd" are the racists, you are part of the problem.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
09 May 15 UTC
Not really, Jeff. He got Obamacare, but that's on its way out. He made a lot of promises, and few of them have come anywhere close to happening. He hasn't done shit about Gitmo. Soldiers aren't coming home in droves. His economic plan is working to a degree, but only to the same degree that someone like Reagan's worked - when his party voted with him. He doesn't have that luxury now, and neither will Hillary. He's been a good figurehead for social progress, particularly in regards to race, gender, and sexuality, but what else does he have to show for?
LeinadT (146 D)
10 May 15 UTC
@mendax

There are two groups of people who are keeping us from getting past racism: those who are obviously racists, and those who try to connect everything to racism and vilify un-racist white people. I think that's what Yaleunc means by the "Al Sharpton crowd."

Also, your previous assertion that those on the right are "racist arsehats" is just as inaccurate as conservatives thinking leftists are immoral and arrogant. As someone with a conservative family, I know that while racism is more prevalent, it's not at all a requirement and they're mostly well-meaning people.

@Gunfighter

As I said to Krellin, being a "socialist" doesn't make someone an extremist. I disagree with that view, but I see where he's coming from. It's left of center, in just about every center you can find, but it's a view that I think people can get behind, as is proven in this forum. Will he win? I'd say almost definitely not, but that's more a flaw of the electoral system and Hilary's absurd pre-coronation (reminiscent of Romney in 2012) than it is half a word that he uses to describe himself.

(By the way, I just defended two points of view that I disagree with. I'm not sure if that makes me a good person or just an annoying one who likes to play devil's advocate.)

Possible meta-gaming?
There's a public game I'm currently in and another player mentioned that two players from this particular game have played a ton of public games together. When we asked, they admitted to being friend outside of the game. Isn't that against the rules? Thanks for clarification.

there's the vDiplomacy site where you can play more variations of diplomacy. Does that site have any correlation to WebDiplomacy? And if it does should my webdiplomacy account work there too? I tried to log in with this account but it didn't work. Thanks for help.

Solve homelessness? Give them homes!
I found this very interesting, and it's a nice and efficient way of approaching the problem of homelessness. Until now the thinking went that giving the homeless homes was a joke and wouldn't solve anything except cost the government even more. As it turns out, providing homes for the homeless is not only a humane choice and improves their lives, it actually saves the government money. A money driven initiative with a positive human impact :)
