ESPN Streak for the Ca$h
Anyone here play this with at least semi-seriousness, and is there interest in making a webDip group on ESPN for friendly competition? I haven't been picking too much but with CFB and NFL seasons starting up in a couple weeks, I plan on trying again. I've gotten up to W21 before during football season.

Conway's Game of Life
I suspect many of you are familiar with Conway's game of life, and there may have been a thread on this topic in the past, but I have been messing around with different patterns and I find this 'game' simply amazing. Such simple physics, but such complex and cool things can happen. If you aren't familiar with the game check out the rules here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conway's_Game_of_Life
For those who do know about this, what is the coolest pattern you have seen??

Tony Stewart Accidentally Runs Over/Kills Driver During Race
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CtBH9FJ3LOU I have never watched a NASCAR or Sprint Cup race in my life...because frankly, I couldn't care less about cars going around and around in a circle 500 times (I don't doubt it's hugely challenging and takes talent, it's just not for me) but wow...what a way to go. :/ Getting run over like that mid-race, shit...

possible banned members page?
I visit a site called GTPlanet and they have a banned members page with some hilarious explanations of why the user was banned. I think it would be cool and funny to have one here as well!
Here's the page from GTPlanet as an example

Is it possible for there to be a war where all sides are actually *right*?
We're all familiar with the idea that there are wars in which everyone is at fault. Let's consider the hypothetical opposite: Is it possible for there to be a war where all sides are actually *right*?
(This is somewhat related to the "religious people so anti-humanity" topic but I think this deserves it's own thread.)

good generic role-playing game system for a fantasy setting?
i'm looking forward to playing a few sessions with friends/relatives, but haven't yet decided what system to use. can somebody recommend one or two systems? i wouldn't want to use more than three dice (only if there's an easy conting method like in fate), but wouldn't like no dice either. yet no other ideas on what the system should cover.

CK,

B12 supplements have to come in extremely high doses because so little of it is actually absorbed, which is why injections of B12 are so common. You only need a fairly small amount, so the fact that injections are required for many people speaks to the inefficacy of the supplements.
Putin33 (111 D)
08 Aug 14 UTC
No, your position was specific to animals you said had no consciousness/self-awareness.
Thucydides (864 D(B))
08 Aug 14 UTC
Right, and to that I hold. Without consciousness, all existence is rocks banging on rocks
Putin33 (111 D)
08 Aug 14 UTC
Then I find your recent declarations about vegetarianism empty rhetoric.
Thucydides (864 D(B))
09 Aug 14 UTC
What recent declarations? The benefits? Those have been the opposite of empty rhetoric; they have been the physical result of my experience.
Putin33 (111 D)
09 Aug 14 UTC
Your declarations about the environment and the suffering/screaming of animals. Those can't be taken seriously.

It's all just rocks to you.
tendmote (100 D(B))
09 Aug 14 UTC
@Thucydides Maybe if your own consciousness wasn't being eroded by your Vitamin B12 deficiency, you'd be more attuned to how much the rocks themselves are screaming.
Thucydides (864 D(B))
09 Aug 14 UTC
You completely misunderstand me. Id like to explain better when I have a proper connection. But in short right now, it is our consciousness of screaming animals that makes their screaming bloodcurdling, even as our own consciousness of our own suffering is what makes it a harm. The universe with no observer doesn't exist. An observer with no universe doesn't exist. The two depend inexorable on each other to have any meaning. It is precisely because of consciousness that it is not just rocks. No rock is just a rock as long as I or other beings live.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))

"The universe with no observer doesn't exist."

Well this is certainly untrue.
tendmote (100 D(B))

For real. Who was observing a million years ago?
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
09 Aug 14 UTC
I think he means that no one was there to label it as the universe, ergo it didn't exist as the universe but as an unnamed mass of space. Typical philosophy bullshit.
Thucydides (864 D(B))
09 Aug 14 UTC
I respond by asking you to define what "existence" is.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
09 Aug 14 UTC
(+1)
And I'll respond by asking you where the fuck my oranges are.
Thucydides (864 D(B))
09 Aug 14 UTC
For example, abgemacht, what makes you think you exist? What makes you think the universe exists? Incidentally both impressions arise from the same source, which is Being itself. By in a hypothetical place with no beings, no observers, I ask, whence Being?

Also, the fact of there being no observer in the past is irrelevant, all that matters is that there was an observer at any point in time in the universe, and I, as well as you, can attest that there now is. Time is as arbitrary as space.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
09 Aug 14 UTC
I honestly didn't understand any of the above.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
09 Aug 14 UTC
Are you saying that a universe in which there were never any observers from start to finish wouldn't exist? In that case, I guess the question would be moot.
Thucydides (864 D(B))
09 Aug 14 UTC
Imagine a universe like ours that during its whole history was unconscious. I ask: in what sense did that universe exist? What makes it any different from a void of nothingness? I ask that you respond not in terms if particulars, of mass and gravitation and chemistry, but in more substantive terms than that: what, in that universe, existed at all?
Thucydides (864 D(B))
09 Aug 14 UTC
Exactly, the question would be moot. Such a universe does not exist in any meaningful way. It is the same as a void of nothingness, it is nothingness itself.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))

Thucy, how are the mushrooms?
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
09 Aug 14 UTC
OK, sure, but so what?
Thucydides (864 D(B))
09 Aug 14 UTC
They have them in Negril for the tourists, but I'm in the eastern parishes and haven't made it over that way, thanks for asking.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
09 Aug 14 UTC
I mean, what is to be gained by discussing a closed system which, by definition, has no impact on us?
Thucydides (864 D(B))
09 Aug 14 UTC
The so what is that now you understand why your own personal consciousness is at least as important as the environment that contains you. The two are one and the same, and for this reason the environment is not just dust, pigs are not just dust, moon rocks are not just rocks - they would be if you weren't there, but there you are, and they are there with you, they are in fact a part of you.

I know the things I'm saying may sound a bit high-flying, but I ask you to think about them straight-forwardly. This is something I believe is true at face value.
Thucydides (864 D(B))
09 Aug 14 UTC
Re: the closed system, to demonstrate what it is that makes our own system different, and meaningful.
tendmote (100 D(B))

Thucydides please don't stop looking! Literally everything depends on it.
tendmote (100 D(B))
09 Aug 14 UTC
No man pigs is dust though.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
09 Aug 14 UTC
But the universe just depends up on *one* observer across all spacetime. My impact is statistically meaningless.
Thucydides (864 D(B))
09 Aug 14 UTC
I think, when you come to the end of your own lookings, tendmote, that you will find by experience that this is indeed the case. Or, rather, you won't, since no one will be there to look and see.
Thucydides (864 D(B))
09 Aug 14 UTC
@abgemacht

The "number" of observers is arbitrary and unimportant. It's an error to think that what is small is unimportant. The large is, of course, constituted by the small, and nothing can be called large without something called small.
Thucydides (864 D(B))
09 Aug 14 UTC
In other words, abge, you are that one. You are more meaningful than anything, or rather, as meaningful as everything. Do you pretend that there is a world for you outside of your own existence? I say your existence is statistically 100% meaningful. What statistic could there be without it?

If you really believe in a higher power why would you support the torture/murder of innocent people ..... maybe this religion idea is not all it is cracked up to be. Maybe religious are the same as the rest of us but just think they are better.
