I would favor light moderation with the following rules:

1. No explicit, credible RL threats directed towards other users (implicit threats are okay as long as they are obviously facetious and/or not credible, for example I could casually remark that I want to kick blankflag's ass but that doesn't mean I'm going to track him down and assault him)

2. No revealing another user's vital personal RL information (such as RL name or RL precise location) without that user's explicit consent.

3. No direct links to sexually explicit materiel and no sexually explicit text. I'll admit that this rule would be subjective and difficult to enforce, but let's try to keep the Forum reasonably SFW in terms of sexual materiel.

4. No discussion of ongoing games (except for rules questions)

5. Restrict advertisement of live games to the "ADVERTISE LIVE GAMES HERE" thread. (this could be more of an unofficial Forum etiquette rule instead of being a punishable offense)

6. No commercial spam (mods, keep up the good work on protecting the Forum from this)

7. Come up with some sort of "thread allowance" rule. In other words, make it so users are only allowed to post Y number of threads in X time period. Obviously, Diplomacy-related threads could be exempt from this rule.

I'm new here but I must say I wish there were someway I could just close the window that allows me to see the forum. No censorship of he forum but just a turn off button or something. It's hard not to look to the left and see some of the things being posted around here. I'd rather I didn't have to and I think it would be an easy thing to do and nd this whole debate. If you want to post in the forum well this is the community you're posting in. If you're just here to play Diplomacy then push "off". I'd love to have that option because I really like the map at this site and the whole game set up is great but the forum has to be the worst that I've ever seen. I'm sure it doesn't represent the community as a whole so I'm sticking around to play a few games but I really can't stand seeing the forum on the left.

I say again, though, a diplomacy related forum threads have a ton of value to everyone, so let's fund an effort to make the forum more flexible! @Gunfighter - your list would lend nicely to "rules of the road" where you might get tapped by a mod for abusing -- (1) ongoing game discussions, (2) RL outing, (3) abuse of links to shady material, (4) commercial spamming, etc. I do not agree with posting limits, which is a blunt way to punish all for the abuses of few, and I suggest for porn to make it a single thread just like the daily bible reading thread, so it can be muted individually. It would be best to be able to turn off non-diplomacy threads at will, though.

My proposed "No RL Info" rule would only apply to people who reveal RL information (that would otherwise be unknown) about another player.

For example, if Player A met Player B in real life (like what might happen at a F2F tournament or some other event), then Player A would be forbidden from disclosing any sensitive RL information (that he may have learned at the F2F) about Player B, since Player B did not not reveal such information of his own free will *in the forum*

If Player X voluntarily posts RL information about himself in the forum, that information can be restated by any player at will.

We've never had a problem with inappropriate distribution of sensitive RL information (at least to the best of my memory) but it's only a matter of time before someone shares something that they don't have a right to share.

That's easy. Just re-size the window so it's not the full width of your screen, and then scroll to the right.

I guess another option is to simply bookmark http://webdiplomacy.net/gamelistings.php. It bypasses the main screen with the forum window.

@Gunfighter, I hadnt realised you were looking for feedback. For what it's worth, I think they are practically dead-on.

My only concern with rule 3 is that we seem to keep having discussions on what porn is, which is something pretty hazily defined in our societies anyway. My pref would be to use redhouse's phrase of porn 'or allusions to it'. While in general I find this phrasing to be quite a sliding scale, I think in practice it will decrease temptation to find the line and will in fact loosen mod mentality, in that we're not forced to investigate whether or not stuff is porn. While I dont agree with hevay modding as normal practice, currently the sliding scale is in fact incentivising mods to be active in holding the line. It would be much more laid back imho if that incentive is put at the posters' end. Paraphrasing Sun Tzu, legislate heavily to enforce lightly.

I think the weak aspect of our modding practice is the appeals procedure. Despite several people having big mouths on the forum, NOBODY has put their money where their mouth is and appealed to the mods by mail. This weakens the process imho. If people disagree, they should appeal formally. Venting in the forum is considered just that: venting.

I also echo JustEric, we shouldnt think that the forum prima donnas represent the community. The poll shows that there is a largely silent plurality of people who wish to see the forum toned down, people saying they feel 'forced' to read the same diatribes on the home page. YJ: perhaps it is you who should show confidence of the majority of users who disagree with you.

josunice suggested allowing adult materiel on the condition that is restricted to one thread only, so that Forum users can choose to mute it. I'd favor that solution, because as you pointed out "porn" has no firm definition, especially considering the number of nationalities represented on this website. However, with that I acknowledge the existence of a slippery slope. Before we know it, every fringe of the Forum would want their own special soapbox for less, well, tasteful materiel, and we'd have 5-10 Forum slots permanently occupied by BS that most users don't want to see.

As to JustEric's suggestion, I have an idea: Could every user set a preference where they can choose what page they get directed to after Login? That way, users who have zero interest in the Forum (which is admittedly rowdy at times) can go straight to the Games page or some other page. I don't know how tough it would be to code, but I'm just throwing it out there for consideration.

Quite frankly, I do not understand why people consistently insist on threads being diplomacy-related. What is there to talk about related to diplomacy? Got a rules question? Consult the rules. Strategy? There is nothing new to discuss. It's not like there a wide variety of permutations of game-play or game-scenarios.
