Having been part of many Internet communities and having left or been banned from all of them except this one, I've noticed they all share a commonality which, somehow, webDip lacks.
They are all controlled by draconian dictators who compensate for their shitty IRL lives by going crazy with power online. If you've ever been part of a gaming community, I'm sure you're familiar with what I'm talking about.
webDip is different for several reasons. The first is that, for a long time, the moderators really had no power over the general community. They could help sort out broken games and run tournaments, but they really weren't different than anyone else. Not only did this avoid an "us vs. them" mentality that is typical in online communities, it ensured that only genuinely helpful people became mods (being a mod on webDip isn't particularly appealing for someone looking for power).
Over time, the power of the mods did increase, but their mentality remained very similar. We've really had three different "eras" of mods. In the first, the mods really just focused on technical problems and were really more developers than moderators. In the second, the roles of mods and admins were developed and they were given new tools. In the current, third era, I think we're seeing this new mod team figure out how best to handle the responsibilities that were given to them. I think they're doing a pretty good job.
But, I still like to think that mods are just members of the community that have a little more responsibility. So, should players be banned for being dicks to mods? No, of course not. They aren't banned for being dicks to other players. Does it make being a mod suck? Yeah, sometimes, but that's the price you pay to keep a site free for tyrants.
Anyway, that went on much longer than I expected. My point is I've seen a lot of the Internet and what we have here is special, let's try not to cock it up too much.
